| | Essential Stan Getz: The Getz Songbook CD Stan Getz Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Aside from the rather horrid Bevis & Butthead cartoon rendering on the album cover, this is a tasteful compilation of tenor saxophonist Stan Getz in his mellower mood. Seven of the tracks are ballads, two of those with a big band and strings, while ten are small-group sessions. Also included are three of his premier Brazilian numbers: "Bahia," "Corcovado," and "The Girl from Ipanema" with Astrud and Joao Gilberto. The warm sound of Getz is obviously prominent, even on the three more energetic swingers, including the bopping "Of Thee I Sing." While far from a complete overview of the career of Getz, especially due to the exclusion of his early-years material, this would be an excellent CD with which to cozy up by the fire with your sweetheart and let the music melt into the both of you. ~ Michael G. This collection brings together songs that display many of the elements that distinguished Getz's playing and career; his lyrical and melodic phrasing, his dynamic control and his legendary smooth, warm tone.
Unfortunately, the first two tracks are slightly unrepresentitive of those qualities. While still technically articulate, Body and Soul and These Foolish Things at times sound more mechanical and less polished than most of his other works. However, from there on it's pure Getz magic.
The rest of the collection does a good job of presenting Stan's rich tone against a variety of settings. From qrartet driven bop and blues, including three cuts with the Oscar Peterson Trio, to the lush string arrangements of Moonlight in Vermont, to the exotic melody and Bossa Nova rhythms of Bahia. And what "essential" collection would be complete without his most recognizable contribution to Brazillian jazz, The Girl From Ipanema!
Overall, this is a good compilation of songs which are easy to digest and exemplify the many facets of one of the greatest tenor sax players in jazz. Submitted by a reviewer (Richmond, IN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Essential Stan Getz: The Getz Songbook music CDs
$6.25 With the release of the spectral title tune, and the efforts of the Columbia marketing and publicity departments behind him, a thirty-year old Miles Davis entered into a period of extraordinary artistic maturity and growth. And Miles instinctively knew how to cultivate his star quality. Looming behind those shades, was the diffident, sensitive anti-hero--proud and defiant--who only spoke to his audience through his horn, and turned his back on them when the other soloists were blowing.
The combination of attitude and intellect was irresistible. Beginning with ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT and proceeding through a remarkable succession of famous recordings over the next 30 years, Miles Davis became one of the greatest soloists, ...

Essential Stan Getz: The Getz Songbook music CDs
$13.95 Dakota Moon are a true rarity -- an urban group that's closer to '70s soft rock than quiet storm. Coming across like a cross between Boyz II Men and Eric Clapton ("Wonderful Tonight" and "Change the World," not "Layla"), Dakota Moon can sometimes err on the side of schmaltz, but there's a charm in their romantic convictions. Furthermore, the group rarely indulges in the vocal histrionics ...

| | Sticks & Stones Sticks And Stones CD (2002)
Essential Stan Getz: The Getz Songbook songs
$16.45 Sticks and Stones is a collaborative trio featuring alto saxophonist Matana Roberts, bassist Josh Abrams, and drummer Chad Taylor. All have their roots in the Chicago avant-garde -- Roberts with the AACM, Abrams with Town and Country, Taylor with the Chicago Underground. They each contribute three tunes to this debut disc, and also make room for inspired readings of "Lose My Number," by the revered trumpeter and jazz educator John McNeil, and "Sons of Slaves," by reggae legend Lee "Scratch" Perry. As befits edgy, spontaneous music like this, the recording is pure and unvarnished. The group's loose but purposeful interplay veers in and out of tempo, ranging from the funky, bass-driven grooves of "Equally Strong" and "Spaces" to the freebop swing of "Usetosay" to the quite abstract terrain of "Hannibul." The reggae cover features electronically modified drum sounds and just a hint of wah on the sax. Taylor's creativity comes to the fore on "Turning the Mark" and "Spicer," respectively the first and last cuts -- both of which feature highly active drumming that contrasts starkly with the sparse, almost mournful moods established by alto and bass. ~ David R. Adler
The members of the Chicago-born trio Sticks & Stones first got together on the stage of the Velvet Lounge as part of the Sunday night house band about four years ago. For the past three years, alto saxophonist Matana Roberts (AACM), bassist Joshua Abrams (Town and Country, David Boykin's Expanse), and drummer Chad Taylor (Chicago Underground ensembles) have crafted their own brand of honest collective music in the great Chicago tradition. The group's self-titled debut features three original compositions from each of the group's members plus covers of John McNeil's "Lose My Number" and ...
