George Lynch Furious George CD (2004)
Molten Gold: The Anthology buy CD music FURIOUS GEORGE is a tribute album to George Lynch's biggest musical influences.
One of the most heralded hard rock guitarists of the mid- to late '80s was George Lynch. And while Lynch could easily keep pace with all the shredders of the era (Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, etc.), his roots lay largely in '70s era classic rock. With the Shrapnel label encouraging veteran rock guitarists to revisit their past in the form of all-covers albums (Jake E. Lee's Retraced, Leslie West's Got Blooze, etc.), Lynch also got the nod, resulting in 2004's Furious George. Unlike his work with Dokken, Lynch's playing takes a decidedly bluesy turn here -- especially on renditions of Robin Trower's "Bridge of Sighs," ZZ Top's "Precious and Grace" (quite possibly the album's highlight), and even the Beatles "I Want You/She's So Heavy." But Lynch is known first and foremost as a metal guitarist, and he certainly gets to flex his muscles on covers of Deep Purple's "Stormbringer," Grand Funk Railroad's "Sin's a Good Man's Brother," and Montrose's "Space Station #5" (which sees singer Kelly Keeling do a spot-on impersonation of Sammy Hagar). While newcomers would be best introduced to Lynch's playing via his Dokken or Lynch Mob releases, for longtime admirers curious to hear Lynch's influences, Furious George is recommended. ~ Greg Prato

Curtis Ohlson Better Than Ever CD (1989)
Molten Gold: The Anthology songs Curtis Ohlson's second album was originally released in 1989, and considerably broadens the palette spread out by its predecessor, So Fast. With saxophonist Marc Russo and vocalist Rosie Gaines (breathtakingly lovely on "A Thousand Years"), both returning from that earlier disc, Better Than Ever possibly peaks with an audacious rearrangement of George Michael's "One More Try" -- audacious because it sits so sweetly alongside Ohlson's own compositions that it could be an original by default. Nine songs long the first time around, the remastered edition that emerged in 2009 added two new songs to the running order: "Every Day's Friday," which has been programmed in near the beginning of the album and sounds like it ought to have been there all along, and "Enough Is Enough," which closes it with dramatic aplomb. More varied than So Fast and maybe more relaxed, Better Than Ever is another of those albums that quite inexplicably "got away" at the end of the '80s. Now it's back and you'd better not miss it this time.
Digitally remastered edition of the 1989 sophomore album from the Soul/R&B/Funk legend. The album features Curtis along with performances from sax player Marc Russo and vocalist Rosie Gaines on the track 'A Thousand Years'. Curtis Ohlson is widely regarded as a world class musician, producer, and composer who continues to amaze within Jazz, R&B and Funk although not bound by a specific genre. Curtis first came to prominence by touring for years as the bass player for music legends Ray Charles and Buddy Rich. Curtis then went on to work with numerous successful Artists including: Branford Marsalis, Sheila E., George Duke, Bob Weir (Grateful Dead), Peabo Bryson, Pee Wee Ellis & Fred Wesley (James Brown Horns), Pete Escovedo, and many others. Voiceprint. 2009.
Audio Mixer: Jim Gardiner.
