(2 Customer Reviews)
Kool & the Gang's fourth studio album was the band's commercial breakout, landing three singles on the Top 40 charts. While two of those tunes, "Funky Stuff" and "Hollywood Swinging," may be best remembered by hardcore fans of old-school funk, the third was the immortal "Jungle Boogie." One of the canonical 1970s funk singles, up there with the best work by Parliament and Barry White, "Jungle Boogie" is a horn-led, jazz-tinged workout with an irresistible beat and a joyous party atmosphere. The rest of the album is nearly as good, culminating in the extended title track, an almost-10-minute hard-fusion jam that will surprise listeners who only know Kool & the Gang's later, more pop-oriented hits. WILD AND PEACEFUL is the balance point between the chart-savvy "Ladies Night" era and Kool & the Gang's wilder early days.

It took the Ohio Players numerous albums to make their funk masterpiece, but when FIRE was released in 1974, it proved the culmination of the hard-driving, bass-and-horn-heavy formula they'd been refining since the late '60s. The title cut, which became one of the band's biggest and best-loved hits, starts off with a fire siren and doesn't cool down from there, dropping into a thick, irresistible groove that deepens with ...

Wild And Peaceful album
$6.55 This is a DTS CD, which features DTS 5.1 Surround Sound technology and is playable on a DTS-capable 5.1 Surround Sound system.
The follow-up to FIRE, the band's breakthrough smash, HONEY continued the Ohio Players' golden streak by building on the elements that made FIRE such a hit: smooth soul balladry, churning funk, and plenty of freaky, outrageous attitude (due in large part to the cartoonish lead vocals of Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner). Slow songs and balladry seem to play a larger part here, as the lush leadoff title track ...
| | Donald Byrd Black Byrd CD (1973)
Wild And Peaceful CD music
$8.25 Purists howled with indignation when Donald Byrd released Black Byrd, a full-fledged foray into R&B that erupted into a popular phenomenon. Byrd was branded a sellout and a traitor to his hard bop credentials, especially after Black Byrd became the biggest-selling album in Blue Note history. What the elitists missed, though, was that Black Byrd was the moment when Byrd's brand of fusion ...

| | Danny Kortchmar Innuendo CD (1980)
Wild And Peaceful songs
$9.69 As much a product of its time as Danny Kortchmar's 1973 debut Kootch, 1980's Innuendo is a heavy, guitar jam record, built primarily on slow bluesy numbers but seasoned with the occasional reggae workout flavored with electronic voices or a slow, churning ballad or tightly wound new wave rocker. As the title track is one of those punchy neon-colored groovers, it's tempting to call this Kortchmar's attempt to ride the new wave wave, but this is a '70s sessionman hangover, too hard and heavy in how it tries to sound young, and apart from the dynamic "Hair of the Dog," not hooky enough to really catch, ...
