A diva is not truly a diva until she releases a Christmas album. 1994's CHRISTMAS SPIRIT is Donna Summer's entry into the canon, and a fine one it is. Summer wisely sticks to the basics here. The two originals, the title track, and "Christmas Is Here" are fine, but Summer really shines on the low-key versions of standards like Mel Torme's "The Christmas Song" and Irving Berlin's "White Christmas."
A born-again Christian, Summer devotes a good chunk of the album to traditional carols and hymns, which she sings with devotion and restraint. The arrangements are mildly synthesizer-heavy, but unobtrusive, and Summer's still-remarkable voice is always at the forefront.
Recorded at Tejas Recorders, Franklin, Tennessee; Sound Shop and Javelina Studios, Nashville, Tennessee.

Spirit of Christmas Summer! Donna Summer's Christmas Spirit shows how she can sing circles around Whitney and Mariah. They should take lessons as Donna belts out O Come All Ye Faithful and O Holy Night. Consider this to be an album filled with spirit no matter what your faith. After listening to this, you'll wonder why she isn't more popular today. Her voice is full and rich encompassing the meaning of Christmas. Two of her own Christmas songs, Christmas Spirit and Christmas Is Here are just as touching as the classic songs White Christmas and The Christmas Song. Plus the vocal arrangements on Christmas Medley, which include - What Child Is This, Do You Hear What I Hear, and Joy To The World, are outstanding. Christmas will never be the same! THE VOICE!!! By far my favorite Christmas album of all time! From the first listen of this wonderful cd, I was hooked! Donna has been given the label of "Disco Queen" for SO long now. So many are unaware of her amazing "pipes". No funky dance grooves on this cd. Just her amazing voice, and an orchestra. Her voice is in tremendous shape. Just listen to "O Come All Ye Faithful". This song and many others ("I'll Be Home For Christmas, "Breath of Heaven") give me actual visible goosebumps. I play this cd at holiday gatherings and several people invariably will ask who is singing. When I tell them it is Donna Summer, they are shocked at the power of her voice. (Which SHINES on this fantastic offering!) This cd is an absolute MUST for your holiday music collection. Submitted by Chuck (Annapolis, Maryland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Keith Ingham We're In The Money CD (2000)
Christmas Spirit music CDs
$7.85 This ensemble lead by U.K. expatriate Keith Ingham patterns itself on those outstanding small groups which let the bop revolution pass them by and stayed with a more refined approach to jazz. The Manhattan Swingtet finds musical antecedents in small groups led by Teddy Wilson, Benny Goodman, Tiny Grimes, Ike Quebec, and Earl "Fatha" Hines. Perhaps the Ingham group is a bit more suave than these groups with its swing a bit more sophisticated. Even on tunes where the title hints at some wild things to come, there's a touch of restraint, as on "Celestial Boogie" where Ingham moves over to the small upright celeste. But the group does let its hair down on some tracks as on the title tune "We're in the Money" when Peter Ecklund's laughing trumpet leads the way. In contrast, "A Room With a View" returns to a less hectic stance ...

| | James Brown Motherlode CD (1988) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Christmas Spirit CD music
$6.85 Recorded between 1967 & 1976. Originally released on Polydor (6093). Includes liner notes by Cliff White.
During the mid- and late '80s, after Brown and Polydor parted ways, the label began to reissue his work, some of which had been out of print for close to a decade. Motherlode is one of the finest compilations. Coming a few years after In the Jungle Groove, a compilation effort that culled some of Brown's harder-edged 1969-1971 tracks, this covers 1969-1973 and has the smoothness of a regular release effort.
By this point, Motherlode producers Cliff White and Tim Rogers began to know more about Brown's "classic" work than he did and could do compilations where the tracks were all potent. This set starts off with an explosive live take of "There It Is" recorded at the Apollo in 1972. 1969's "She's the One" with his late-'60s orchestra has great guitar work from both Jimmy "Chank" Nolan and Alphonso "Country" Kellum. Since most of the tracks here weren't hits, or were even released, it provides a fresh interpretation of Brown's production style and the skills of his players. "Untitled Instrumental" features Brown's rock and psychedelic-influenced unit, with included guitarist Phelps Collins and his brother, Bootsy Collins, and his singular bass skills. The heart of this CD, however, is "People Drive Your Funky Soul." Originally on Slaughter's Big Rip Off in a too brief 3:50 version, Motherlode brings the entire take to the public for the first time. The track, which manages to subtly cross reggae with bebop, again features Brown with his 1971-1975 band and it exhibits their chemistry and the band's unb
