| | Best Of Parliament: Give Up The Funk CD Parliament Discography of CDs
Recorded between 1974 & 1980. Includes liner notes by Tom Vickers.
This is part of the PolyGram Chronicles Funk Essentials series.
Though true fans will want to seek out the individual albums, it's hard to go wrong with this outstanding collection of songs. Parliament brings unbridled creativity to dance music. Their original melange of rock, blues, soul, and jazz elements, underscored by a celebration of black identity and drug-influenced sci-fi fantasies, enables them to transcend the limitations of the genre. Many of the Funk Mob's finest creations are included on this disc, including "P. Funk," "Up For The Down Stroke," "Chocolate City," "Mothership Connection," and the incomparably great "Flashlight."
It should be said that this album is in no way comprehensive, or even justly indicative of this unique ensemble's astonishing range. For that, one should go the original discs or check out Funkadelic, Parliament's stranger and more high-minded twin unit. Nevertheless, GIVE UP THE FUNK is an outstanding sampler and a great place for the uninitiated to get their first taste of what Funk's First Family does best.

Best Of Parliament: Give Up The Funk CD music
$13.85 When he died in 1984 at the relatively young age of 48, Z.Z. Hill went down in history as a great blues singer. But he was also an excellent soul singer, and this 1990 CD reminds us that he had as much to do with earthy, gospel-drenched Southern soul as he did with B.B. King-influenced electric blues. Focusing on Hill's Malaco output, Greatest Hits contains some inspired 12-bar numbers (including "Open House at My House," "Shade Tree Mechanic" and Denise LaSalle's "Someone Else Is Steppin' In") but is just as heavy in its R&B content. "Right Arm for Your Love," "Get a Little, Give a Little" ...

All songs written or co-written by William Collins or George Clinton.
William "Bootsy" Collins's monstrous and elastic bass sound is one of the defining ingredients of funk. After making pivotal recordings with James Brown and George Clinton's Parliament-Funkadelic, respectively, Collins launched a successful solo career that built on his outrageous stage persona and the otherworldly, deep funk he helped originate ...
