Around the same time Bob Dylan went electric in Newport, several thousand miles away in France Serge Gainsbourg, hip avatar of all things French, embraced the modish Carnaby street rock & roll sweeping England and America, producing some of the most vital music of his career, not to mention the sexiest. For a man whose personal appearance had been described as a handicap, Gainsbourg managed to produce some of the best pre-Prince makeout music on either side of the Atlantic.
The breathy "Je t'aime... Moi Non Plus," a duet with Jane Birkin, oozes the scent of the boudoir, and her vocals on "Comic Strip" and the sublime "Bonnie and Clyde" (later to be sampled by Mc Solaar) prove that Brigitte Bardot's assets weren't confined to the visual. Add the rave-up "Docteur Jekyll et Monsieur Hyde," and you have the makings of a heck of a cocktail party.

Comic Strip CD music
$12.65 When not singing in the saloons and salons of the Rive Gauche or playing the bad guy in a serious of ludicrously bad Italian films, Serge Gainsbourg also found the time to dabble in the cha-chas and mambos which had swept Europe and America in the previous decade. However while most of the dance crazes were meant as one-offs, Gainsbourg took his excursions into Caribbean rhythms ...

Comic Strip songs
$13.99 Originally released on Columbia in 1968, The United States of America is one of the legendary pure psychedelic space records. Some of the harder-rocking tunes have a fun house recklessness that recalls aspects of early Pink Floyd and the Velvet Underground at their freakiest; the sedate, exquisitely orchestrated ballads, especially "Cloud Song" and the wonderfully titled "Love Song for the Dead Che," are among the best relics of dreamy psychedelia. Occasionally things get too excessive and self-conscious, and the attempts at comedy are a bit flat, but otherwise this is a near classic. ~ Richie Unterberger
In its original form, the United States of America's self-titled (and sole album) was one of the most exciting and experimental psychedelic albums of the late '60s, blending searingly imaginative ...
