For listeners who had caught up with the Cardigans on their breakout album, Life, the group's third album was a confusing pastiche which included several conventional pop songs, but also added tracks with left-field arrangements and some (comparatively) disturbing lyrics. In reality, however, the group had simply returned to the mood and feel of their debut album. On Emmerdale, the melancholy was personal and solitary in nature, but here depression is focused on unfaithful lovers -- in both the songs which vocalist Nina Persson helped out with lyrics and those written by the rest of the band ("Choke," "Step on Me," "The Great Divide"). Even the single, "Lovefool," is a depressing lament of unrequited affection, and the presence of another Black Sabbath cover ("Iron Man") certainly isn't an immediate upper. Still, First Band on the Moon is saved by the Cardigans' core strengths: Persson's vocals and Svensson's arrangements. ~ John Bush Sweden's Cardigans are steeped in a tradition of lush European pop that loosely stretches from the Beatles, through Abba, to Stereolab. But while FIRST BAND ON THE MOON, the quintet's second American album, hints at these touchstones and others like them, the muscular guitars that emanate from behind the Cardigans' expansive arrangements easily distinguish them from their forebears. Great pop hooks are, after all, a dime-a-dozen in Sweden; but pop power-chords are another matter. This is where the Cardigans' Black Sabbath influence emerges. No, we're not kidding. FIRST BAND ON THE MOON is the second consecutive record on which singer Nina Persson reconstitutes a song by Ozzy and company (in this case, "Iron Man") within a Swedish bubblegum context. The result is a first-rate gimmick--imagine, if you will, a female voice coyly stating, "I am iron man." Sabbath's aura can also be found invading the crispy guitar hook of "Your New Cuckoo," the bass throb behind the vibraphones on "Losers" and most clearly on the metallic Beatles feel of the verses to "Choke." This is certainly more than one would expect of another blonde, Swedish pop band.Rolling Stone (11/14/96, pp.112-114) - 4 Stars (out of 5) - "...The music remains cotton-candy sweet, but vocalist Nina Persson and guitarist Peter Svensson temper the giddiness with strikingly downbeat songwriting..." Entertainment Weekly (9/20/96, p.82) - "...Nina Persson's dream-whipped vocals tra-la-la through ditties about being hit, stepped on, or abandoned....Thankfully, the happy musical arrangements keep the themes as featherweight as an episode of LOVE BOAT." - Rating: B+ Q (10/96, p.158) - 4 Stars (out of 5) - "...the quintet cook up a highly appealing blend of instantly accessible indiepop, made less twee by Peter Svensson's roaring but controlled guitar and given more depth by Lasse Johansson's rumbling keyboards..." Alternative Press (1/97, p.66) - 4 (out of 5) "...Just like this album." Option (11-12/96, pp.96-97) - "...The arrangements again are lush yet crisp, with bouncy beats, charming hooks, Nina Persson's girlish voice, and crunchy guitar chords rubbing against flutes, strings and chimes....shifts tempos, accents and effects imaginatively..." Melody Maker (12/21-28/96, pp.66-67) - Ranked #30 on Melody Maker's list of 1996's `Albums Of The Year.' Melody Maker (9/21/96, p.49) - Bloody Essential - "If people this cool, this clever and this outrageously gifted weren't also thoroughly misunderstood, it wouldn't be fair....FIRST BAND ON THE MOON is, on its own terms, one of the most accomplished and affecting pop records of the year....This is real music..." NME (Magazine) (12/21-28/96, pp.66-67) - Ranked #43 in NME's 1996 critic's poll. NME (Magazine) (9/28/96, p.57) - 8 (out of 10) - "...LIFE was actually a sweet'n'simple compilation of their first two Swedish albums, which rather sneakily left out all the weird'n'nasty bits. Here, however, are The Cardigans in all their Ozzy-worshipping, ex-boyfriend-abusing, ambient cocktail jazz-embracing glory....But they all sound like heavenly pop hits regardless..." Cardigans First Band On The Moon Songs First Band On The Moon Music First Band On The Moon Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) Paradoxical Bliss The music of First Band on the Moon is quite a paradox. The arrangements and the vocals are so upbeat and sugary sweet, great for bopping along to and plenty smile provoking. However, the lyrics say anything but. It's almost like listening to Alanis Morisette after she's finished drinking overly sweetened kool-aid. I like it. I like it a lot. Submitted by ndachelle (Las Vegas, NV) Was This Review Helpful? What?! Cardigans A big fan of Sabbath?! I haven't heard the entire album yet because I saw Lovefool on it & I don't want to listen to it but my jaw just dropped dead when I saw the title "Iron Man" and saw that you are not kidding! Now that I've learned the Cardigans have their own version of Sabbath's "Iron Man", I'll be more than happy to buy the album! I'm a Heavy Metal freak and bands who cover Sabbath tunes deserve a Heavy Metal ear! Submitted by Nora Aunor (Philippines) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Wonderful its a really good cd, I would reccomend buying to anyone, every song has a tantric kind of beautiful sound to it, I loved it instantly and I had only heard lovefool off of it. Submitted by kasper91688 (Chicago, Il, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
good and a nice change.... It is a different sound, more arctic scandinavian sound in the production of some songs, that will be fully exposed in "gran turismo", but the melodic and cleverly played indypop from their two previous records remains with them.
Definitely a must. Submitted by polo gallagher (america) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great Album Not a bad song on it. All of the songs have great beat, great rhythms and great lyrics. Sadly, the entire album is not heard because of the idiots who just listen to LoveFool,a great song but not the only good one. Never Recover is my favorite. First Band On The Moon
$12.65 Institute: Gavin Rossdale (vocals); Chris Traynor (guitar); Cache Tolman (bass guitar); Charlie Walker (drums). Audio Mixer: Jay Baumgardner. It should come as no great surprise that Institute, Gavin Rossdale's first band since breaking up Bush, sounds a whole lot like Bush. Rossdale wasn't just the frontman, he was the songwriter and architect of their sound, an Englishman enthralled with American grunge who was at first taken for a musical carpetbagger, but as the '90s rolled on, it became apparent that he was one of the few post-grunge rockers to really, truly believe in this stuff. As all the American grungesters abandoned the sound, Rossdale stuck with it, sometimes bringing in fashionable electronic beats as he did on Bush's final album, 2001's Golden State, but pretty much sticking to the same sound that he developed on Sixteen Stone. Although he'd been away for about five years -- during which time such odious neo-grunge bands as Nickelback and Puddle of Mudd ...
