Audio Mixer: Terry Brown. Recording information: Studio, Morin Heights, Quebec, Canada (09/1979-10/1979). Photographers: Deborah Samuel; Flip Schulke; Fin Costello. Arrangers: Rush; Terry Brown. Since Neil Peart joined the band in time for 1975's Fly by Night, Rush had been experimenting and growing musically with each successive release. By 1980's Permanent Waves, the modern sounds of new wave (the Police, Peter Gabriel, etc.) began to creep into Rush's sound, but the trio still kept their hard rock roots intact. The new approach paid off -- two of their most popular songs, the "make a difference" anthem "Freewill," and a tribute to the Toronto radio station CFNY, "The Spirit of Radio" (the latter a U.K. Top 15 hit), are spectacular highlights. Also included were two "epics," the stormy "Jacob's Ladder" and the album-closing "Natural Science," which contains a middle section that contains elements of reggae. Geddy Lee also began singing in a slightly lower register around this time, which made their music more accessible to fans outside of the heavy prog rock circle. The album proved to be the final breakthrough Rush needed to become an arena headliner throughout the world, beginning a string of albums that would reach inside the Top Five of the U.S. Billboard album charts. Permanent Waves is an undisputed hard rock classic, but Rush would outdo themselves with their next release. ~ Greg Prato Falling somewhere in between heavy metal and AOR, Rush were one of the success stories of the period from 1976 to 1986--all the more surprising because few Canadians manage to break out from the land of the maple leaf in this area of music. Much of their following idolized Alex Lifeson, who was a guitar hero with the technical ability of a Page or a Beck. Occasionally Neil Peart's lyrics leave a little to be desired: "the shifting shafts of shining, weave the fabric of their dreams . . ." Jon Anderson from Yes was afflicted with the same condition of pretentiolyricitus. That aside, the music is faultless.

Rush Permanent Waves Songs Permanent Waves Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews MAKE THIS ALBUM 5 STARS!!! This album is far more, the best Rush album of the 80's era. It may not have many synthesizer sounds, but with Alex Lifeson's guitar solos, it bings the songs to "Life." Keep Rushing everyone! 8 Track Gold by Rush, now on CD! I have an Eight Track of "Permanent Waves" by Rush (I'm 16 yrs old and like old stuff) I just have to let the whole tape play all the way through without stopping it or skipping tracks because this is my favorite album of any artist, I also have to play it very loud to. And they have all those great songs on a CD, so I can play it on my CD player on the way to school!!! Submitted by Edwardredefined (Leonard, TX, US of A) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Another Platinum album by Rush This is another great album by Rush. Everybody that has ever heard of Rush knows the first 2 tracks on the cd. The other songs are good, but I was really blown away by "natural science" the first time I heard it. Rush has a unique sound all their own, thats why I like this band so much. Most people don't understand Rush and make opinions about them because they made music that didn't always follow the same sound as the previous album. To me that just shows the genius of this group, always exploring new and different sounds. I haven't heard a cd yet that I dislike. Submitted by David (Paris, TN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | 2nd South Carolina String Band Lightning In A Jar CD (2008)
Permanent Waves
$31.59 The 2nd South Carolina String Band was formed in August of 1989 by five riflemen of Co.I, 2nd SC Volunteer Infantry, a very active unit of Civil War reenactors. After the battles, drills and inspections at reenactments, these five men would unpack their instruments to play and sing around the campfire while members of the unit would often join in and sing along. This was the beginning of the 2nd South Carolina String Band. Without recognizing it at the time, the group, comprised of mostly amateur musicians playing banjo, fiddle, guitar, tambourine, bones and military drum - had coalesced into a 20th century recreation of a typical American Civil War camp band. In the beginning they played only at night around their company camp fire as they enthusiastically began to explore and perform the music of the War Between the States. But it would not be long before they began performing for reenactment dances and concert audiences. Two decades have passed since the summer they met, and the band's popularity has grown within the Civil War reenactment community and far beyond. During the same period the group itself has grown and matured in their musicianship, sense of historical accuracy, and presentation. The group has changed over time, adding new members and instruments - a second fiddle, fife, pennywhistle and flute. It now numbers eight regular members (with a few frequent guest artists) and they're proud to say that four of the original five men are "still with the colors" - still proudly representing the much renowned but no longer active infantry company they once marched with. Over the years they have worked with filmmaker Ken Burns in contributing period music to the soundtracks ...
