Hold Your Fire is an album in the purest sense; infinitely greater than the sum of its parts, it gradually draws in the listener by slowly revealing its nuances and secrets. While the use of keyboards is still overwhelming at times, Geddy Lee employs lush textures which, when coupled with a greater rhythmic and melodic presence from guitarist Alex Lifeson, results in a far warmer sound than in recent efforts. Of course, drummer Neil Peart is as inventive and exciting as ever, while his lyrics focus on the various elements (earth, air, water, fire) for much of the album. Opener "Force Ten" is the band's most immediate number in years, and other early favorites such as "Time Stand Still" and "Turn the Page" soon give way to the darker mysteries of "Prime Mover" and "Tai Shan." The multifaceted "Lock and Key" is quintessential Rush, and sets the stage for the album's climax with the sheer beauty of "Mission." As was the case with 1976's 2112 and 1981's Moving Pictures, Rush always seem to produce some of their best work at the end of each four-album cycle, and Hold Your Fire is no exception. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia Continuing their trend that began with GRACE UNDER PRESSURE, Rush turned in a glossy, keyboard-driven record with 1987's HOLD YOUR FIRE. Like the previous album, POWER WINDOWS, this one was co-produced by Peter Collins, resulting in a collection of very pop-friendly songs but with the trio's signature complex arrangements and intelligent lyrics. The most dramatic difference with FIRE is the inclusion of an outside guest vocalist on "Time Stand Still" in the person of rocker Aimee Mann. This period of Rush's career often came under fire from many longtime fans, who felt the band had exchanged their heavier, fantasy/sci-fi style of the '70s for a flashier, synthesizer-infused sound in hopes of gaining more radio airplay. However, it is the band's traditions of artful lyric writing coupled with intricate musical soundscapes that shine through the glistening digital textures. Standout examples of such include the opening "Force Ten," "Prime Mover" and the driving "Turn The Page." Soon, the trio would grow out of this period and strike a musical balance between the new digital technology and their original guitar-oriented sound.

Rush Hold Your Fire Songs Hold Your Fire Music Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Am I the only one? As a long time Rush fan, I thoroughly enjoyed Hold Your Fire. Sure, it was probably the height of their slick production and keyboard usage, but there are truly some outstanding tracks on this album. Force Ten, Open Secrets, Prime Mover and my favorite...The Mission.
Although Time Stands Still received a lot of radio attention and even some rotation by eMpTyV, long time fans know that commercial success was never in the forefront of the band's minds. Submitted by dcampbell (East Stroudsburg, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 2 found this helpful.

Still a Great Album Though this is not the favorite of many Rush fans, I happen to like it a lot. Sure, it is a little more keyboard friendly and homogeneous than previous releases, but it is still fresh, good music. Buy it. Submitted by dcampbell (East Stroudsburg, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Hold Your Fire
$10.65 Shortwave radio squeals. Beatles-esque tape loops, and healthy doses of analog tape twiddling all underscore the pure-sugar pop tones of "Snow Gas Bones". Meow Meow offers up their debut album, a literate blend of fuzzed out/revved-up guitar anthems and beautifully understated/stoned soundscapes.Meow Meow began as a studio project between Kirk Hellie and Christopher O'Brien in 1998. Shortly after the end of their respective bands (Pink Noise Test and Brian Jones Was Murdered), the prolific writing team amassed a large collection of tunes in Kirk's home studio."Snow Gas Bones" is fueled by a penchant for pop melodies and art-damaged-ground sound - sonics. Meow Meow exists somewhere between Brill Building tradition and grandpa's pre-war 78 rpms played with a broken stylus.

Hold Your Fire
$11.49 BUSKER U-- ELM STREET FIELD RECORDINGSA few years ago, Peter Spang Goodrich went to see Michelle Shocked at Club Passim. Before the show, she was dining with an old friend. During the show, Michelle called Michael Sullivan up from the audience to accompany her on the guitar. Needless to say, the artistic chemistry between the two was awesome. Spang was intrigued and a few months later went to see activist Michelle at a fund raiser for the World Social Forum at the Middle East. Michael was waiting for Michelle at the stage entrance. Spang asked him if by chance he gave guitar lessons. Michael said he did. And so a magical musical mystery cruise along the Harmony River began.Michael's stage moniker is the Rev. Busker, well earned since he has taken a Harvard divinity course to enhance his work with Bostons homeless. Plus, he is one of the most accomplished buskers (street musicians) in the world. Not to be outdone, Spang decided he needed a stage name too. His dad had called him Doktor Krankheit. He asked German-American folksinger Antje Duvekot ...
