For their second album, the Refreshments decided to move away from the smirk-rock that made their debut effort Fizzy Fuzzy Big & Buzzy (specifically its caper-chronicling single, "Banditos") a minor hit. With the assistance of producer Paul Leary -- who helped his own band, Butthole Surfers, crack the Top 40 charts one year prior -- the group began blending rock & roll songraft with elements of alt. country and jangle pop. Tracks like "Wanted" and "Preacher's Daughter" spun tales of western outlaws with poppy precision -- including handclaps, vocal harmonies, and crisp guitars -- while "Dolly" and "Good Year" were finely crafted rock songs that went sorely unnoticed on modern rock radio. Although The Bottle & Fresh Horses effectively marked the end of the Refreshments, the album still encouraged frontman Roger Clyne to stretch his country legs, an opportunity that would soon serve him well with the follow-up project Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers. Likeminded groups like the Old 97's enjoyed some degree of success with the very same hybrid of rock, country, and pop, but The Bottle & Fresh Horses unfortunately failed to maintain the Refreshments' presence in the post-grunge landscape. Accordingly, consider this record one of the strongest forgotten gems of its time. ~ Andrew Leahey
The Refreshments: Roger Clyne (vocals); Brian Blush (guitar); Buddy Edwards (bass); P.H. Naffah (drums).
Recarded at: Arlyn Studios, Austin, Texas; 4th Street Studio, Santa Monica, California.

$10.29 If you saw the title Honky Tonk Union but had never heard anything by Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers, you might deem the band a country-oriented ensemble. It would certainly be a logical assumption. But for the most part, this CD isn't country -- not honky tonk, not pop-country, not alternative ...

| | Wil Allen God's Wil CD (2007)
Bottle & Fresh Horses songs
$10.15 Wilhelm Josef (Wil) Allen, a gifted and multi-talented songwriter, hails from the state of Louisiana by way of Belzoni, Mississippi. This native of Marrero, LA is not your ordinary gospel songwriter. With a humble spirit, Wil has charmed his way into the hearts of all who pay attention to his smooth but funky gospel sound. Wil's music has been described by his listeners as being exciting, funky, groovy and heart warming in one shell. Wil began his musical career at the Greater Macedonia Pentecostal Church where he was the keyboard player. He later started leading worship and singing with a high school quartet group. It wasn't until he was in college that he was inspired by several talented musicians and was challenged to develop his own style. On a chorus scholarship, singing with a choir known for singing all but gospel, Wil was more focused on developing his vocal instrument to be an opera or Broadway performer. After attending college, Wil accepted a position as a musician in Sacramento, Californinia, at the Gospel Center Church of God In Christ where he was exposed to a host of talented organ and keyboard players, and all sorts of musicians. During this period of his life he started writing music, and found peace in releasing his musical thoughts on paper. Wil has tried several times to record different projects, but none of them would ever conceive, in order to birth. Until his latest venture when teaming up with Legacy Studio's Owner and producer Robin (Rob) Rorie. Wil has said that Rob was God sent, and when God sends someone, expect results. Rob opened the Legacy Studio doors for Wil to be creative and express himself in a way that God was dealing with him musically, and he did just that. Single released in October 2007, 'God's Wil' will quickly become a hot commodity in the Gospel and mainstream secular community. God's Wil is who he desires to become and as his song says, what he wants to do. The release of this single is just a start of what has been in a cocoon for several trying years. Wil is now praise and worship leader at two sister churches in Covington, Louisiana (Faith Bible Church & Covenant Christian Church), and he says that along with playing in back-up bands with Jazz artist Fred Sanders, 'this has taught me humbleness and patience', and it has also been a tremendous ...
