Era's eponymous debut album may be a little too similar to Enigma for some tastes, but Eric Levi is a skilled producer who's capable of making engaging soundscapes. So even if Era doesn't sound groundbreaking, it doesn't sound bad either, and anyone who likes the hypnotic classical-dance fusion sound that was all the rage in the early '90s will find this quite entertaining. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

As trippy and loose-limbed as the album art may be (echoes of Santana's ABRAXAS), SUENOS LIQUIDOS finds these rockeros Mexicanos creating an ever-more refined sound. It's a free-and-easy rock & roll that's been baked in the Yucatan sun, with all the fun of Bryan Adams, the drive of the Police and an unflinching love of the ballad. With a nylon-string guitar fill here or a harmonized vocal fadeout there, frontman Fher and drummer Alex Gonzalez display an impeccable production sense, enhancing the mood while keeping the mix clear and each instrument distinct.
Fher's gone and caught gypsy fever, with his dreamy, dust-throated crooning about a mermaid enchantress on "Hechicera." Lead guitarist Sergio Vallin provides fine shredding over the song's reggae-rock beat, a familiar Mana sound. "Un Lobo" and "Clavado" are pure chunky-riff fun, songs about the highs and lows of being lost in love. And who could resist all those sweet chorus harmonies? These chicos may be getting a little older, but their music is still full of life, y en Espanol como siempre.

From the triumphant opening of the first tune and ensuing applause, it's clear that this is one of the finer UNPLUGGED sets to be found. Although stylistically similar to DONDE JUGARAN LOS NINOS, CUANDO LOS ANGELES LLORAN ("When the Angels Cry") is a relatively harder-rocking, stripped-down record for Mexican pop-rock outfit Mana. The sweet, atmospheric synth sounds of past records are pushed more to the background and Sergio Vallin joins the band as first-chair guitarist, with a piercing, heavy metal sound that shifts seamlessly between crunching chords and soaring, Van Halen-esque leads. Mana's members seem to gel more than ever as a distinct band here, and the result is some of the tightest songwriting and production in their discography.
"Como Un Perro Enloquecido" ("Like a Mad Dog") is pure fun, alternating between Police-style ragga rhythms and double-time, up-tempo rock & roll. Peppered with staccato horn breaks, "Dejame Entrar" is a funky number, with vocalist Fher insisting on access to his lover's soul. The title track is Mana's touching tribute to murdered Brazilian environmental and indigenous land rights activist Chico Mendes. It opens with the distant toll of church bells and a poignant acoustic guitar vignette by Vallin, giving way to slow-grooving, stirring verses about Mendes' life and a chorus striped with characteristically seamless vocal harmonies.

Three years after London released The Best of Hothouse Flowers in the U.K., Rhino in the U.S. issued Greatest Hits in 2004. It's essentially the same collection as The Best of, containing the same artwork and the same 14 tracks as that compilation, adding the singles "One Tongue" and "An Emotional Time" from 1993's Songs From the Rain to give that album a greater presence. It improves the collection, making it a more representative overview of the band's entire career and a worthwhile retrospective and introduction. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
London Records reportedly put this retrospective album together without involving anyone from Hothouse Flowers. That undoubtedly explains the rather bizarre track selection and the almost insulting emphasis on the band's first two albums. The 14-track compilation features more than half of People (1988) and more than a third of Home (1990). But there are only three tracks from the group's second pair of albums. It's not surprising that the producers were not as keen on the 1998 comeback attempt, Born, a U2-esque modern rock record that constituted a major stylistic departure for the band. It sold poorly in the U.K. and is the only Hothouse Flowers album that has never been released in the States. But it is harder to understand why "This Is It (Your Soul)" is the only representative of the fine 1993 effort Songs From the Rain. Several singles from that record ("An Emotional Time," "Isn't It Amazing," "One Tongue") are completely ignored here in favor of earlier album tracks, giving The Best of a monochromatic feel that is unusual for a retrospective. That said, the compilation does include several indisputable Hothouse Flowers classics and only one song (the title track from Home) is completely undeserving of inclusion. It's not really fair ...

At first glance, the teaming of DJ Spooky with Dave Lombardo (drummer for Slayer and Fantomas) may seem an unlikely pairing. But from the opening remake of the Public Enemy tune "Brother's Gonna Work It Out"--a track featuring Lombardo's fierce beat-keeping, crunching bass and electric guitars from Jack Dangers, Spooky's tweaky atmospherics, and Chuck D himself on vocals--the project makes perfect sense. DRUMS OF DEATH emerges at the intersection of the most progressive and aggressive music of the 1980s, '90s, and 2000s; it suggests that the line between hip-hop, hardcore metal, and the outer reaches of electronica has always been thin and somewhat arbitrary.
Chuck D raps on two other tracks ("B-Side Wins Again" and "Public Enemy #1"), and MC Dalek guests on "Assisted Suicide." However, most of the album is instrumental, focusing on Lombardo's thunderous pyrotechnics, Spooky's evocative textures and samples, and the contributions of additional musicians, most notably guitarist Vernon Reid. The record shifts from metal ("Kultur Krieg") to futuristic jazz ("The Art of War [Back to the Lab]") to the avant-garde (the collage experiment "Incipit Zarathustra") in a joyous disregard for conventional categories.
