Richie Sambora's second solo album Undiscovered Soul is a more ambitious affair than Stranger in This Town, finding the guitarist trying on a wide variety of styles. Not all styles are fit Sambora's bluesy hard rock foundation, but it's interesting him to try out blues-rock, power ballads, pop/rock, arena rock and Stonesy rock, even if he's not always successful. Sambora has a pleasantly bland voice and knows how to craft a hard rock song, even if he doesn't always come up with a good hook. The result is a respectable journeyman album filled with competent songwriting and fine guitar playing -- just the kind of record that will appeal to his fans. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine On this, his second solo album, Richie Sambora attempts to step out of the shadow of his vocalist/movie star co-writer. He does a fine job of it, as his singing and guitar playing have definitely evolved from his earlier work. UNDISCOVERED SOUL is a very personal, heartfelt album full of emotion and passion. The album consists of mostly mid-tempo, acoustic-based songs, going more for feel than flash. In other words, Bon Jovi fans shouldn't expect any lighning-fingered, '80s heavy metal solos here. Improving upon his blues-based debut release, Sambora combines the aforementioned mid-tempo tunes with soulful ballads. He has lined up a stellar band to get the job done, including Kenny Aronoff (arguably the finest technical drummer in rock), Don Was (who also produces), Billy Preston and Chuck Leavell. All in all, an excellent sophomore effort from a guitarist who deserves his time to shine. Richie Sambora Undiscovered Soul Songs Undiscovered Soul Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) Outstanding!! Made in America is a good song, but Undiscovered Soul is by far the best. If this album had come out in the early to mid 70's, it might have rivaled the big groups/artists of the day & would have made the charts. If God Was a Woman, Harlem Rain, All That Really Matters... these songs show the diversity of musical influence that he has & yes, Hard Times Come Easy is an excellent, catchy tune as well. richie sambora's undiscovered soul i remember that this CD came out when i was a senior in high school. the rock radio station used to play "hard times come easy" all the time, and it made me wanna buy the album. although it is in a more blues vein than bon jovi's stuff, it still has that groove that sambora and bon jovi always had and still have. i really wish "hard times come easy" would get put into the bon jovi live set on a regular basis. give jon a 5 minute break and let richie shine! My favorite artist Hi,
I think it is one of the best artists I've heard. Undiscovered Soul and In it for love are great! Yes, even in Holland are fans of him.
I hope a lot of people will agree that with me. If you never listened to his CD, it's time to try, you'll like it. Submitted by a reviewer (Ede, Holland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Undiscovered Soul
$14.79 Salvatore are an enigmatic Norwegian ensemble who, since 1998, have created a sinewy, pulsating, jazzy brand of arty instrumental rock derived from early Tortoise records and the electro-acoustic Motorik of Teutonic brethren Kreidler and To Rococo Rot. On their 2002 release, Tempo, they keep an air of mystery by not listing the instruments played by each bandmember nor including any obvious photos of them, being content with a few grayed-out black-and-white landscapes and interiors. This helps add to an aura of mutability to the package, leaving the music to speak for itself and take on whatever shape the listener envisions. Not surprising the originators of the Chicago school of post-rock are emulated here, since this session was recorded and mixed by Tortoise's John McEntire in his Soma Studios in Chicago, and the band even did a brief European tour with Tortoise. But Salvatore, despite wearing their influences on their sleeve, manage to forge their own identity with this collection of evocative soundscapes. The tracks here are relatively short for a genre that tends toward excess, which leaves them concise and to-the-point, almost disappointingly so, because they set up some exceedingly tight and memorable grooves which could enthrall a listener even if they went on forever. And though they sound like they may have evolved from loose ...
