Very Best Of The Village People album
$6.95 Jo Dee Messina's sophomore album might be called I'M ALRIGHT, but its real message is "I'm Alright...without you." In song after song on this mostly upbeat album, Jo Dee plays the Strong Woman role, whether she's telling unfaithful or non-committal lovers to beat it, or insisting on a relationship that's equal in every way. In the infectious "Bye Bye," she's driving away from her loser boyfriend, declaring that she's got "the rear view mirror torn off, I ain't never lookin' back." Elsewhere, she's talking herself into leaving a nowhere relationship ("No Time For Tears"), refusing to get involved with a guy who's bad news ("I Know A Heartache") or warning a straying lover that he'll get what's coming to him one day (a cover of the late Dottie West's hit "Lesson In Leaving"). These types of songs are Messina's strength. I'M ALRIGHT is a fine follow-up to Messina's hit debut, with well-chosen material that provides a showcase ...

Very Best Of The Village People songs
$22.89 U2 burst onto the scene at the onset of the '80s with a majestic, uplifting, earnest approach and a unique textural sound that endeared them to fans and critics alike. They spent the rest of the decade growing up in public, solidifying their status as post-punk icons, marrying the good intentions of old-school alternative rock with the epic sonic scale of classic '70s rockers, never sounding less than totally original and never pausing for a hits compilation--until 1998. BEST OF offers a good representation of the complex body of work that made the band a legend.
Fittingly, the album begins with ...

Very Best Of The Village People CD music
$11.69 Digitally remastered by Rob McMaster and Tom Rothrock (2001 Capitol Studios).
This disc chronicles Richard Thompson's '90s recording career on Capitol Records. Much of the work Thompson did during this period was with producer Mitchell Froom, who adds a slight studio sheen to Thompson's folk-rock sound, but never in an excessive or unwelcome manner. Thompson had honed his songwriting and already virtuosic guitar playing to a razor's edge, venturing occasionally into the kind of traditional British folk style favored by his old band Fairport Convention, but also tossing off searing electric leads with disarming ease.
The outlaw biker narrative "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" and the bittersweet lost-love lament "Beeswing" showcase Thompson's ability to pen timeless-sounding folk tunes. "I Feel So Good" and "I Misunderstood" find him exercising enough sophisticated pop melodicism ...

| | Valensia Queen Tribute CD (2003)
Very Best Of The Village People album
$16.45 QUEEN TRIBUTE, the 2003 cover album from celebrated heavy metal group Valensia, pays homage to Queen.
Aldous Byron Valensia Clarkson (aka Valensia) presents the music of Queen in an interesting light. The album cover is stunning and gorgeous, shadowed pastels creating eye-catching visuals which complement the smooth renditions of material made famous by Freddie Mercury, Brian May and company. Valensia's vocals do an accurate job of copying Mercury -- so much so fans could easily mistake this as the real thing. It brings to mind Todd Rundgren's delightful Faithful album -- more than a "tribute" in the purist sense of the term. Rundgren simply had fun proving to the world he could duplicate "Strawberry Fields Forever," as well as Jimi Hendrix. And that's what Valensia seems to be doing here, having fun while making a statement that he has the chops to put Humpty Dumpty back together again. OK, so "Bohemian Rhapsody" is a tough mountain to climb, and doing it so well is indeed an achievement, but the true standard for cover versions remains Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels' dismantling of Lou Reed's song, "Rock & Roll," and reconstructing it to the point where everyone ...
