Kiss: Paul Stanley, Mark St. John (vocals, guitar); Gene Simmons (vocals, bass); Eric Carr (drums).
Producers: Paul Stanley, Michael James Jackson.
Recorded at Right Track Studio, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Robert V. Conte.
Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio (Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
Animalize was more successful than the previous Lick It Up, but that's only because its predecessor had accomplished the job of restoring the band's reputation among adolescents. While it followed the same pattern as Lick It Up, most of the songs were second-rate, with the noticeable exception of the smoldering "Heaven's on Fire." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
With two strong albums back to back (Creatures of the Night and Lick It Up), Kiss fans were confident that the band's next album would be just as good. Although 1984's Animalize was a big hit (eventually going double platinum), it was the beginning of the band's second unfocused period. Instead of leading the heavy metal pack with raw hard rock (i.e., their classic albums from the '70s), in the mid- to late '80s, Kiss seemed to be copying other successful pop-metal bands (Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Mötley Crüe, etc.), both musically and visually. Mark St. John replaced the departed Vinnie Vincent on guitar (guitarist number three in a span of three years) and proved to be a highly technical player, the complete opposite of original member Ace Frehley's straight-ahead style. Still, there were a few strong compositions on Animalize, such as the MTV hit "Heaven's on Fire" and two heavy tracks: the opener, "I've Had Enough (Into the Fire)," and "Under the Gun." But by this point, bassist Gene Simmons was more interested in pursuing an acting career than being an integral member of Kiss, so many of his compositions are either forgettable ("While the City Sleeps") or just plain embarrassing (the Spinal Tap-esque "Burn Bitch Burn"). Although a commercial success, Animalize was not nearly as strong as its two predecessors. ~ Greg Prato
With personnel changes and neglect from a key member of the band, it's amazing ANIMALIZE turned out as well as it did. This record shows Kiss was able to rise above all the groups who copied a style of music that Kiss originated.
After LICK IT UP, "creative differences" pushed lead guitarist Vinnie Vincent out and speed demon Mark St. John in. Without missing a lick, St. John was able to fill Vincent's shoes admirably. Also around this time, Gene Simmons decides to try his hand at acting, starring in such films as "Runaway" and "Wanted Dead Or Alive". Thus, he is listed as Associate Producer but in reality had minimal input. Producer Paul Stanley did a fine job putting his own personal technical stamp on the album. Stanley sings on "I've Had Enough (Into The Fire)," a fast and furious track with motivational lyrics. He also fills in on bass for Simmons on both singles, "Heaven's On Fire" and "Thrills In The Night." Lyrically, Simmon's songs reflect where he was in the 80's with titles like "Burn Bitch Burn" and "Murder In High Heels".

3 stars There's no such thing as a bad KISS album...
KISS always makes great albums but this one is my least favorite of the '80s period. I would only buy this one if you're a diehard KISS fan like i am. Stand-out tracks include: Heaven's On Fire, Thrills In The Night, And Under The Gun.

5 stars dedication to eric and mark.
animalize is screaming hair rock that is so addictive!. i'd say that kiss is better at both eras the glam 70's and the metal 80's. under the gun is speedy. heaven's on fire deserved to be a hit hell, all of these songs can befeatued in guitar hero or something. problem is the new darker metal stuff now sounds too dark and LOUD!. i must have had ears of tin due to all the heavy metal in the 70's or 80's or 90's. most records are too loud and noisy for the sake of it. i say i enjoy dragonforce but this should do nicely. get animalize!. r.i.p mark and especially you eric.

3 stars This album was ahead of it's time !!!!!
I am a diehard Kiss fan , but i have mixed feelings about this album. As a drummer , I think Eric Carr was executing his drum fills perfectly. The draw-back to this album is Mark St.John and his Tremelo Bar. Mark overused the tremelo bar . overall , the songs were awesome and the production was awesome

By 1982's Creatures of the Night, Kiss had finally ditched their plans of becoming "respectable artists" (starting with 1979's Dynasty) and had come to the realization that they were a loud, no-holds-barred heavy metal band. Easily their best since 1977's Love Gun, Creatures of the Night contains very little filler and sounds as if Kiss had been reborn ...

Due to the underachievement of their exceptional 1982 comeback album, Creatures of the Night, Kiss knew the time was right to drop the makeup, so in September 1983 the band shocked their fans by unmasking on MTV. Their first non-makeup album, Lick It Up, followed soon after and successfully re-established the band ...
