When MTV refused to air Kiss' one and only video from their 1998 reunion album, the title track from Psycho Circus (for reasons unknown), the masters of merchandising saw another golden opportunity to rake in the cash. The official Psycho Circus Video includes the 3-D video (plus 3-D glasses), and also comes with a CD-single which features the title track as well as a non-album song, Ace Frehley's "In Your Face," plus a screensaver, and software to connect to Kiss' official website, Kiss Online. And knowing full well that there are some Kiss fanatics that need to buy every last piece of merchandise ever issued, each CD-single comes with a cover of a single bandmember. In other words, completists will have to buy the Psycho Circus Video 4 times in order to get a complete set! The featured video clip itself is pretty entertaining - the bandmembers perform against various computer-generated backdrops, while images of their best-known gimmicks are also featured (Gene Simmons drooling blood, etc.). Still, the Psycho Circus Video will be of interest to hardcore fans only. ~ Greg Prato
Since the 1996 reunion tour was a blockbuster success, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons decided to keep Peter Criss and Ace Frehley around for a little while longer -- long enough to record a full-fledged reunion album, Psycho Circus. Anyone expecting a stylistic breakthrough from a reunited (allegedly revitalized) Kiss would be unfamiliar with the band's history. Throughout the years, the only real change has been in the guitarists and drummers; the band's sleazy, big, dumb pop-metal has remained the same. The problem is, it's the kind of music that sounds more convincing when it's performed by a young, hungry band that makes records on the cheap. That way, the albums really sound as sleazy as the men who make them. As the band pushes 50, Kiss no longer sound young, hungry, or sleazy -- they sound like professional dirty old men. And since they're professionals, they can turn out some catchy hooks when called upon, but Psycho Circus ultimately feels worn out, more of a huge advertisement for an impending tour than a full-fledged record. Certainly, they're crafty enough to toss out a few anthems to please fans ("I Pledge Allegiance to the State of Rock & Roll," "You Wanted the Best"), and that may be enough to appease fans longing for an album by a reunited Kiss, especially since Frehley is a better, more charismatic guitarist than anyone else that has floated through the band. But cynics (i.e., anyone who isn't a hardcore fan) will probably view it as pandering. Which raises an interesting question: who is more cynical, Kiss for writing fan-baiting rock & roll anthems simply to sell records, or the reviewers who call them on it? ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
It's 1978 all over again! Comeback kings Kiss reunite the original lineup for their first album in 19 years, and it's as if time had not moved. Following a mega-successful tour in 1996, the grease-painted warriors give the Kiss army something to sink its teeth into. But rather than copy its pastRolling Stone (11/12/98, p.119) - "...PSYCHO CIRCUS--an album of platform-stomping rhythms, roller-coaster guitar riffs and sing-along choruses--is far more respectable than any of the awkward flops from the no-makeup years..."
Entertainment Weekly (9/25/98, p.106) - "...This is rock with a capital R, captured in all its cheesy glory....This new effort proves that in the circus of hard-rock dinosaurs, Kiss remains its Barnum & Bailey." - Rating: A-

5 stars KISS my a$$ haters, this rocks
I read the haters here and they proved they are not true fans. This is vintage kiss. To hear them on you wanted the best was the best song. Peter's song was classic jazz tone of his. We are one had me feeling I was one of the band. Destroyer is their best, but this next.

3 stars Great 'comeback' album
For me, this is a true comeback album by Kiss..not that they ever disappeared!!! "Psycho Circus" and "Raise Your Glasses" are 2 very beautiful songs that show the boys in good shape again. This album is a good prelude of rockin' things to come for KISS in the future.

3 stars What screensaver?
Went off to a great start with "Psycho Circus" followed by Gene's creepy "within" and Ace's "Into the void" but from "you wanted the best".....it turned out to be not the best after all, it didn't sound like the real KISS I knew and loved. The enhanced CD with Screensaver didn't work either! If you had windows 95 it works, but this is the 21st century.

During the late '90s, it seemed like prog rock had finally achieved extinction. But fast forward ten years later and the genre was thriving once more - as evidenced by the arrival of such groups as Astra and their 2009 full-length debut, THE WEIRDING (which includes some very Roger Dean-inspired cover artwork). Hailing from an area not exactly known for spawning prog goliaths (San Diego), THE WEIRDING is not all about fingers flyin' on the fretboard, however, as the group touches upon the spacy sounds of early Pink Floyd and King Crimson on the title track. And this same approach carries over throughout the entire album, as evidenced by such ditties as "Silent Sleep" and "Ouroboros," both of which follow the prog prerequisite of songs that stretch ...

Never mind System of a Down's irresistibly quirky Serj Tankian. If any heavy metal musician were picked to represent the musically adept but incurably goofy spirit of Frank Zappa, it would probably be gifted lunatic Devin Townsend, whose prolific and eclectic output -- not to mention blackened sense of humor -- over the course of a steadily lengthening career continues to amaze and confuse in equal quantities. Through those years, Strapping Young Lad, while ostensibly a "group," has served as the most common laboratory for Townsend's wacky solo experiments, but word is, studio album number four, 2005's fittingly named Alien, is their first true band effort. This is somewhat rather hard to ascertain, but there's no disputing the additional claim about the album constituting an exercise in catharsis, nor the fact that few bands choose song titles as descriptive of their contents as SYL. To wit, "Imperial" comprises Scandinavian-flavored black metal of earth-scorching intensity, the nearly unpronounceable "Skeksis" contains a suitably schizophrenic and disorienting art rock-metal cacophony, and "Shitstorm" offers, well, a sh*tstorm of unprecedented madness, rife with giggle-inducing lyrics and a children's choir all crammed inside. Moving right along, lest we be overcome by the oncoming rush, "Love?" delivers intentionally dumb lyrics via chorused harmonies (think King's X from hell), "Shine" channels Fear Factory's nightmarish industrial metal ...
