In 1997, even as "Lovefool" climbed the Adult Contemporary radio-play charts and further sold mainstream America on the sound of "Swedish pop," something separated the Cardigans from sugary countrymates such as Roxette and Ace of Base. Yes, they placed their metallic guitars out-front while their colleagues hid behind layers of sequencers, making for a more "alternative" approach to "pop." More defining, though, was the sinister cloud that always hung around their songs, no matter how sunny the delivery and the setting. On GRAN TURISMO, the Cardigans follow this dark muse--which already beckoned them to cover Black Sabbath twice in two records--further incorporating a deeply affected melancholia into their Euro-pop ways.
On a bed of lush, melodic keyboards, Nina Persson's light tenor brings an angelic disposition to nearly every word she coos, no matter how pessimistic, while trip-hop beats keep the heartbreak moving forward. More importantly, the dirty squalls and lo-fi drive of Moogs and guitars amidst the band's pristinely produced songs seem deeply infected with the sound of American indie-rock (think Blur aping Pavement). And when this newfound influence collides head-on with the Cardigans' inherent way with a tune, GRAN TURISMO approaches the sublime in ways their previous records didn't.
Limited edition CD maxi single featuring 1999 mixes by the hit Swedish alternative pop/ rock group's underappreciated & underexposed countrymen Naid, who like to dabble in all things electronica (think Bjork, Gus Gus, Lamb, Baxter, etc.). Contains one mix apiece of five tracks from the Cardigans' 1998 album 'Gran Turismo', 'My Favorite Game', 'Erase/ Rewind', 'Higher', 'Hanging Around' and 'Junk Of The Hearts'. Slimline jewelcase.

Entertainment Weekly (11/6/98, p.88) - "Just when you thought it was safe to write off these Swedes as an Austin Powers-era novelty blip, they go all contemporary, shedding their tired '60s-isms in favor of blissfully kitschless trip-hop..." - Rating: B+ Q (12/99, p.115) - 4 Stars (out of 5) - "...the sound is more claustrophobic and compressed although still lit with great tunes....Naiifs or smart-alec? Whatever, this is great, original stuff." Cardigans Gran Turismo Songs Gran Turismo Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) First Band on the Moon? Now Best Band on the Moon! The first time i heard Gran Turismo I was not impressed. I felt that none of the tracks stuck in my mind and it had been a waste of money. It was placed on the shelf with my other old Albums.
1/2 a month later a friend bought it and started telling me how amazing it was. I decided to give it another whirl. This time I knew the songs (though not well, but enough to be able to listen and enjoy) and from then i was hooked. This album was in my CD player for 2 months to be taken out for 2 weeks for the stereophonics (another good album) and now returns to its old haunt reguarly. The true test of time is that it has stayed in my car stereo (wether playing or just resting in the tape deck while the radios on) since my second listen. This album is incredible buy it now. But always give it a second listen. Submitted by a reviewer (Bournemouth, England) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Sugar-free pop Forget what you've heard about the Cardigans as being fluff -- they're certainly not ABBA, Aqua, nor any other Scandinavian pop confection. This album reaches toward the darker side of pop: subterranean groove, distorted loops and songs about alienation and disillusionment. Don't be fooled by Nina Persson's angelic vocals, either. They'll surprise you on every track. Submitted by a reviewer (Rutland, VT) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Psychodalic RockPop!! l am a Psychodalic rock fan. I have never expected this kind of music to come out of a band of this kind. its not heavy psychodalicity like radiohead's in OkComputer , but softer and more plesent.
Good stuff! very origional. I hope that this is the first of many of its kind.
Also good to know that rock music is expending to new levels, and not sticking with the stuff that repeeting itself over and over again , changing time and band.
Try it! if you like good music you wont feel disapointed Submitted by 111alex (byalik , haifa , israel) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Gran Turismo
$11.59 Pugsley Munion began life under the name Mask in Fitchburg, Massachusetts . When the band recorded their first record for J & S Records in 1969 they found that the name Mask was already used so they had to come up with a new name for the band. So the story goes the bands road crew came up with the name Pugsley from street sign in New York and the Munion came from the name of a cop that had run into at a donut shop after a gig one night hence the name Pugsley Munion. The band consisted of John Schuller keyboards, vocals and acoustic guitar, Thomas "Ducky" Belliveau, guitars bass & vocals, and Edward Kelly on drums and percussion. Schuller, the creative force behind the band wrote or co-wrote with Belliveau every track on their album. This very rare album was originally released in 1970 on J&S Records, a small R&B label and was recorded in New York at the Bell Sound Studios. The album contains some tasty guitar work on some of the tracks together with Schuller's thundering organ sound which makes this a totally unique hard rock album that will appeal to fans of many late sixties hard rock blues sounding bands. The band members are still involved in the music scene with Schuller recording in the mid 80's as part of Orion The Hunter with Boston members and Belliveau being one of America's top session players touring and playing on albums with such notables as John Cafferty, Terrance Trent D'Arby Peter Wolfe and many more. Kelly is also a much in demand area session drummer. As a bonus to the original album this reissue contains two alternate demo ...
