Vangelis uses ringing synthesizer textures and stately rhythms to evoke the majesty of China, in a similar fashion to another of his "geography" works, Antarctica. While a few tracks use acoustic piano and other organic instruments, the centerpieces "Chung Kuo," "The Dragon" and "Himalaya" use bracing percussion and synthesizer effects to emphasize the subjects (each reflected by its title). ~ John Bush

China Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Great CD by Vangelis I have about 25 Vangelis CDs and this one is about my favorite. It really is great. Submitted by AndyJDouglas (Birmingham, AL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great themes, great compositions! This CD sounds very organic (given the original release date of 1979, it is no wonder). Vangelis is playing some very nice piano and of course his organ sounds are very full. Not only that, there is so much happening here dynamically, it encompasses so many different feelings throughout the CD. He did a nice job at consistently keeping the theme of the orient alive in this with what sounds like a koto or something throughout the CD. As an added bonus, 'The Plum Blossom' has a great violin player named Michel Ripoche that sounds very playful. Not typical Vangelis to me, but a great composition from the two them. I recommend this CD. Submitted by a reviewer (Savannah, GA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Blade Runner CD (1994)
China CD music
$8.39 This is the complete, original soundtrack to BLADE RUNNER, not released until 1994 because of contractual difficulties. This release also includes some soundscapes which were not in the movie.
It was a circuitous route that led Greek keyboardist/composer Vangelis to BLADE RUNNER. He first came to worldwide attention as part of the '70s progressive rock trio Aphrodite's Child, later going solo as a synthesizer wizard, and occasionally collaborating with buddy Jon Anderson of Yes. With a passion for lush orchestrations, Vangelis fell naturally into soundtrack work, making a splash with his score for CHARIOTS OF FIRE. The music he created ...

China music CDs
$9.95 Greek composer/keyboardist Vangelis has been through so many stylistic mutations over the years that it's hard to pin down his musical center. From the progressive rock of his band Aphrodite's Child to his art pop collaborations with Yes vocalist Jon Anderson and his romantic film score work, he's shown many sides of a complex artistic persona. EL GRECO extends his vision ...

China music CDs
$11.89 Already one of smooth jazz's best selling artists, guitarist Craig Chaquico is an artist least likely to need any sort of commercial boost; yet his fourth release Once in a Blue Universe sacrifices a bit of his trademark subdued musical spirituality for slick pop elements that seem calculated to increase his stature and sales. Fortunately, he doesn't let these inclusions -- which include appearances ...

| | Clarence Fountain Stepping Up & Stepping Out CD (2009)
China songs
$12.59 As a founding and former member of the legendary Blind Boys of Alabama, Clarence Fountain has enjoyed a 70-year career as a gospel singer, and amazingly, he still sings with skill and verve. On Stepping Up & Stepping Out, where Fountain shares billing with another former member of the Blind Boys, Sam Butler (no stranger to the secular side of things, having worked with Keith Richards, among others), Fountain has delivered what might be his most accessible and mainstream album yet. It's no secret that classic soul always derived its spirit and energy straight from gospel, with the two streams separated only by the nature of their themes, and there have been many singers (Sam Cooke and Al Green come immediately to mind) who've sung successfully in both genres without really changing the approach (only the lyrics), but generally it's all one or the other, either gospel or soul. What Fountain and Butler do on this very impressive release is actually combine the two, and it makes for an album of startling emotional balance. Every track has a powerful resonance, whether it leans to the gospel side or secular side of the great divide. There's so much to like here, but the beautiful "Down to the River," the Curtis Mayfield-like "It's a Different World" (which features a guest spot from Donald Fagen on melodica), and the bluesy, funky "Don't Let the Devil Ride" are clear highlights. It's unusual to hear a project where gospel and soul blend as artfully together as this, which makes Stepping Up & Stepping Out a rare and special treasure. ~ Steve Leggett
