Live Recording
Def Leppard: Joe Elliott (vocals); Pete Willis, Steve Clark (guitar); Rick Savage (bass); Rick Allen (drums). Additional personnel: Chris M. Hughes (synthesizer). Recorded at Startling Studios, Ascot, England in December 1979. On Through the Night, Def Leppard's debut album, established the band as one of the leading lights of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. While possessing the tight, controlled attack of comrades Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, Def Leppard was uninterested in the fantastic, menacing, and sometimes gothic themes of those bands; instead, On Through the Night is a collection of working-class hard rock anthems informed by the big, glittering hooks of glam rock. It may lack the detailed production and more pop-oriented songwriting of later efforts, but it's also arguably their heaviest album, and some Leppard fans prefer this sound. ~ Steve Huey After spending a few years honing their chops playing bars in England, the members of Def Leppard released their first full-length album, ON THROUGH THE NIGHT, in 1980. Though the young band (all the members were either in their early 20s or still teenagers) was an exciting live draw, on record, Def Leppard was still finding its sound. ON THROUGH THE NIGHT shows that the group had great promise, and that its chief influences (Judas Priest, AC/DC, and especially Led Zeppelin), are easily detectable. There's also a palpable excitement that comes across from a band recording its first album. ON THROUGH THE NIGHT does not contain any hit singles that are still played on rock radio today (as the group's future releases PYROMANIA and HYSTERIA would), but it remains one of the band's most straightforward release. Although some of the material gets bogged down in cliches ("Rock Brigade," "Rocks Off," "Wasted," etc.), tracks such as "Hello America" and "Overture" contain soaring vocal harmonies and evidence the melodic rock direction that the band would soon take to the top. ON THROUGH THE NIGHT was produced by Judas Priest producer Tom Allom. On future releases, producer Mutt Lange, the "sixth Leppard," sculpted the band's sound.

This is the best one... This is one of the albums that Def Leppard made before they got really famous. Both "On through the night and High'n'Dry" are good albums. This is better because DL are making their statement to the industry. "High'n'Dry was a natural progression in their music and a good follow up. This album though featured "Hello America" which was the single lifted and compares with anything that was around at the time. They were competing with Maiden/Rainbow and Whitesnake who were significantly bigger in status at the time. The albums boasts strong tracks throughout and is clealy the best offering by DL without the AOR slant on their songs. Enjoy... Submitted by Dino (Sussex, UK) Was This Review Helpful? A Lost Classic Head, shoulders and kneecaps above anything else they ever did, sounding like a nuclear Thin Lizzy before Mutt Lange turned them into an AC/DC tribute. Steve Clark shows here what a real talent he was when given the chance to let go - it is criminal how he was overlooked for Phil Collen (urk!). The sound is so much more metal and the songs are sooooo much better. It is one of rock's great tragedies how this potentially great metal band turned into another sucky US radio pop band. Aaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrgggggghhhhhhh!!! The rock icon album of the modern era!! When the walls come tumbling down" and "Rock off" are the downright, slightly melodic equivalent of "Overkill" and "Bomber" by Motorhead and are worth the entire album!
A M.U.S.T.!!! Submitted by dragster (Sydney,NSW,Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

On Through The Night
$11.99 Def Leppard: Pete Willis, Steve Clark (vocals, guitar); Rick Savage (vocals, bass); Rick Allen (vocals, drums); Joe Elliott (vocals). Recorded at Battery Studios, London, England. Personnel: Pete Willis, Steve Clark (vocals, guitar); Rick Savage (vocals, bass guitar); Rick Allen (vocals, drums); Joe Elliott (vocals). Recording information: Battery Studios, London, England. Def Leppard's second album, High 'N' Dry, continues in the vein of the anthemic, working-class hard rock of their debut. While still opting for a controlled musical attack and melodies as big-sounding and stadium-ready as possible, the band opens up its arrangements a bit more on High 'N' Dry, letting the songs breathe and groove while the rhythm section and guitar riffs play off one another. MTV helped break the album in the U.S. with its heavy rotation of the video for the unabashedly dramatic rock ballad "Bringin' on the Heartbreak." ~ Steve Huey Between the time of Def Leppard's 1980 debut, ON THROUGH THE NIGHT, and the band's second album, HIGH ...

| | Arrogant Worms Beige CD (2007)
On Through The Night
$16.45 The Arrogant Worms began their journey to musical comedy success (oxymoron) in 1991 in Kingston, Ontario on campus radio. Those nine listeners were very impressed and The Worms could have retired at the top of their game but they kept going … into the frightening world of live shows. They were quickly abandoned by the nine radio listeners who preferred not to leave their homes. A new audience was cultivated and the meagre income from those early shows was enough to record their self titled debut album in 1992. The Arrogant Worms received airplay on national radio in Canada and were soon touring across their vast homeland. The Worms have since released nine more independent albums - Russell’s Shorts, C’est Cheese, Live Bait, Christmas Turkey, Dirt, Idiot Road, Toast and most recently, Beige. They have consistently topped the sales charts for their distributors and have sold over 150,000 albums to date. Recognizing this valuable Canadian resource, American label Oglio Records released Gift Wrapped, a ‘best of’ collection in 2002. The Arrogant Worms released a DVD of their concert with the renowned Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, also a national television special. Quite the show. And it is their show that keeps the people coming back for more. The Arrogant Worms have provided tuneful and silly escapism all over North America and Australia in venues of all shapes and sizes - from small clubs to theatres to arenas ...
