Bad Girls marked the high-water mark in Donna Summer's career, spending six weeks at Number One, going double platinum, and spinning off four Top 40 singles, including the chart-topping title song and "Hot Stuff," which sold two million copies each, and the million-selling, Number Two hit "Dim All the Lights." Producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte recognized that disco was going in different directions by the late '70s, and they gave the leadoff one-two punch of "Hot Stuff" and "Bad Girls" a rock edge derived from new wave. The two-LP set was divided into four musically consistent sides, with the rocksteady beat of the first side giving way to a more traditional disco sound on the second side, followed by a third side of ballads, and a fourth side with a more electronic, synthesizer-driven sound that recalled Summer's 1977 hit "I Feel Love." Though remembered for its hits, the album had depth and consistency, concluding with "Sunset People," one of Summer's best album-only tracks. The result was the artistic and commercial peak of her career and, arguably, of disco itself. ~ William Ruhlmann Largely regarded as Donna Summer's rock & roll album, thanks to some hot guitars mixed in with the synthesizers, 1979's BAD GIRLS mostly sounds like an indication of the way mainstream pop music would sound in the 1980s. It's hard to imagine Michael Jackson's THRILLER, David Bowie's LET'S DANCE or Madonna's LIKE A VIRGIN without this punchy and enormously successful blend of dancefloor heat, rock & roll cool, and smart pop songwriting. Starting off with the killer one-two punch of "Hot Stuff" and the title track--possibly Summer's two best songs ever--the rest of the 70-minute-plus CD (originally a double album) features a handful of exceptional, dramatic ballads and some pure dance music in the mode of earlier hits like "I Feel Love." Though the songs are still lengthy, the arrangements are tighter and poppier than before. BAD GIRLS is a disco-rock classic. BAD GIRLS (1979) is Donna Summer's musical peak, one of the first albums to bridge the seemingly impassable divide between disco and rock. To a latter-day audience familiar with Prince, Madonna, Duran Duran, and others who built on this album's pioneering synthesis, it might be hard to imagine just how "ne'er the twain shall meet" the rock and disco audiences were at the end of the '70s. However, Summer and her primary collaborators Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte, along with new team member Harold Faltermeyer, added some guitars, pop hooks, and rock beats to their typical electronic pulse, and the mixture resulted in fourRolling Stone - 3 Stars - Good Q (11/03, p.138) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...[The album] possessed enough strutting pop suss to take it far beyond the dancefloor..." Bad Girls
$10.09 Original score composed by Mark Mancina & Phil Collins. Producers: Phil Collins, Mark Mancina, Rob Cavallo, Chris Montan. Original score composed by Mark Mancina & Phil Collins. Disney retired what was once Sir Elton John from the office of animated-film/adult-contemporary hitmaking and replaced him with the yet-to-be-knighted Phil Collins. A squire he may be but, unlike fellow composer Randy Newman, Collins is in no danger of writing intelligent and engaging songs that go largely ignored by the masses, making his Brother Bear score a likely Oscar contender. That's not to say that middle-of-the-road pop confections like "On My Way" and future American Idol standards such as "Look Through My Eyes" are devoid of craftsmanship -- they positively radiate Hollywood gloss -- it's simply indicative of pop culture's voracious appetite for audio fast food. Here Disney continues to regurgitate the same musical formula that fueled The Lion King by dipping mediocre pop songs into a heap of worldbeat dressing and dropping them into the public's open mouths like a mama bird. Collins, a talented and accomplished musician, does his best to rise above the restrictions of the cartoon genre by inserting some good old-fashioned Genesis-like prog rock into the mix. The exhilarating "Transformation," which features the heavenly voices of the Bulgarian Women's Choir, channels the superb work done by Hans Zimmer on the aforementioned Lion King soundtrack, and like "The Circle of Life" before it, its serpentine melody features prominently ...

Bad Girls
$18.99 Running Time: 58:48A jazz-virtuoso cantor and a kabbalistic psychotherapist bring their respective talents together, to provide new inspiration for the High Holidays. Weaving a tapestry of tales, teachings, and tunes, Richard Kaplan and Estelle Frankel share their love of sacred music, Jewish mysticism, and the transformative power of storytelling. Frankel draws on insights from her acclaimed new book on Kabbalah and psychology, Sacred Therapy, and Kaplan shares liturgical innovations from his stunning second CD, Life of the Worlds, that will send chills down your spine! REVIEW from 'Public Radio Exchange' by Geo Beach:"LISTEN, RICHARD KAPLAN IS TRANSCENDENT. His intellect has expanded into spirit, and his spirit takes wing on voice. In 'The Jewish New Year' Kaplan takes very specific traditions from Eastern Europe and North Africa and runs with them like streamers across a broad America. Make no mistake – this programming is more than "a Jewish thing". People everywhere understand. Because producer Russ Jennings elegantly arranges Kaplan – songwriter, pianist, ethnomusicologist, and teacher – with Estelle Frankel – author, psychotherapist, teacher of meditation, and student of the Kabbalah – and she is as unique and astonishing with word as he with song. What you get is chicken soup, stirring, that comes out of the radio soulful and fragrant. Frankel's storytelling reveals ...
