As longtime Uriah Heep fans know, the band could really tear it up on stage during their '70s prime--and their 1973 release LIVE perfectly captures the band's in-concert excitement. Recorded at a tour stop in Birmingham, England during January of '73, the band cranks out high decibel renditions of many of their prog-metal masterpieces.

"Sunrise" proves to be just as intense and emotional in concert as the original studio version, while both "Sweet Lorraine" and "Easy Livin'" rock with the best of them. Uriah Heep's LIVE is a solid example of the whole early '70s in-concert hard rock experience.

Recorded live in England, January, 1973.

Live Recording

Uriah Heep: David Byron (vocals); Mick Box (guitar); Ken Hensley (keyboards); Gary Thain (bass); Lee Kerslake (drums).

4 stars A great album and a great CD too!
Uriah Heep was one of the most important hard rock bands in the seventies. This record captures the band attitude, energy and approach to heavy and hard rock'n'roll. Highly recommended CD.

Black Sabbath Master Of Reality CD  (1971)

Live
CD $8.95  4.5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
The album's opening track, "Sweet Leaf," a salute to one of the band's favorite smokeable substances, contains one of metal's heaviest guitar riffs, courtesy of Tony Iommi. Another eternal band favorite is the grim, post-nuclear war tale "Children of the Grave." Vocalist Ozzy Osbourne is in fine voice on "After Forever" and "Lord of this World," while the more tranquil "Solitude" and the instrumental Iommi compositions "Embryo" and "Orchid" offer a bit of variety. Though not quite as influential as PARANOID, MASTER OF REALITY remains one of heavy metal's founding gems. While other frontrunners of hard rock/metal like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple began dabbling in other musical forms (folk and string symphonies, respectively), Black ...

While the title track is the album's best-known song, SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH proved to be another in a long line of 100% filler-free records from Ozzy and co. Highlights included the creepy "Who Are You?," plus the Tony Iommi riff-mongers "A National Acrobat," "Killing Yourself to Live," and "Sabra Cadabra," a song that Metallica would cover on its 1998 release GARAGE INC. You'll also find one of Sabbath's most haunting yet serene instrumentals, "Fluff," as well as the melodic album-closing rocker, "Spiral Architect." SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH is quintessential heavy metal. 1974's SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH is widely considered to be Black Sabbath's last true classic album. The musical experimentation that ...

Black Sabbath Technical Ecstasy CD  (1976)

Live
CD $6.15  3.2 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
By the mid-'70s, a number of problems were threatening to break up the original line-up of Black Sabbath. The stress brought on by lengthy touring, drug use, and alcoholism had begun to dilute the band's original, influential heavy metal. Sabbath began to drift away from the straight-ahead power rock of such classic albums as PARANOID and SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH, as evidenced by its final two albums to feature singer Ozzy Osbourne, 1976's TECHNICAL ECSTASY and 1978's NEVER SAY DIE. However, TECHNICAL ECSTASY does contain some intriguing, overlooked tracks. The best known song of the bunch is the album-closing rocker "Dirty Women," which explores the topic of prostitution, and was later featured on the original line-up's 1998 live album, REUNION. Drummer Bill Ward sings his one and only song with the band, "It's Alright," which is amongst Sabbath's most pop-friendly compositions ever. Also featured is the pacing ...

Black Sabbath Paranoid CD  (1971)

Live
CD $8.69  4.7 stars Top 100 Audio Samples
PARANOID proved to be Black Sabbath's most focused, consistent, and successful record. Leaving behind the amorphous, extended jams of their debut for focused songs and a more structured sound, Black Sabbath virtually wrote the book on heavy metal with the ominous, unforgettable riffs, thunderous rhythms, and dark themes on this release. There are some up-tempo rockers, the famous title track for one, but for the most part PARANOID oozes along like a bad dream, as on the slinky, creepy opener, "War Pigs," or the lumbering thud of "Iron Man" (which boasts one of the most indelible electric guitar riffs in rock history). The album's title is apt: PARANOID is filled with an edgy aggression and lyrics about war, insanity, death, and destruction. Ozzy Osbourne's flat, affectless voice merges perfectly with Tony Iommi's fuzzed-out, sledgehammer power chords and the bruising bass and ...

Black Sabbath Never Say Die! CD  (1978)

Live
CD $6.09  3.4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
By the end of the '70s, though Black Sabbath remained a top concert draw, its albums had become increasingly erratic and sub-par when compared to its earlier master works. Singer Ozzy Osbourne's growing disillusionment with the band had reached a boiling point, especially after it took so long to complete 1978's NEVER SAY DIE, the original line-up's final album. Though the album's title might suggest that the band had reconciled its differences (Osbourne had already left the band once previously, only to return shortly afterwards), the turmoil spilled over onto the recording. The album-opening title track remains the record's best-known track, as it was featured on Ozzy's popular 1982 solo live album of Sabbath material, SPEAK OF THE DEVIL. Other hard rockers on the first half of the album, such as "Junior's Eyes" and "A Hard Road" prove to be standouts. ...

This reissue contains 2 bonus tracks from RAW, LOUD, LIVE EP. Released at a time when the band was pretty much falling to pieces, Live (Hot Curry and Wine) combines tracks from Holocaust's influential debut, The Nightcomers, with a number of new songs and obscure tracks. Most crucially, this set contains possibly the only commercially available version of the band's classic "The Small Hours" (famously covered by Metallica -- and a corker it is too), along with some quality material ("No Nonsense," "Lovin' Feelin' Danger," "Forcedown Breakdown") from their rare Garage Days Revisited EP (yes, Metallica later borrowed that too). Highlights from the aforementioned The Nightcomers LP are also ...

Bill Evans Since We Met CD  (1974)

Live
CD $9.65  Audio Samples
Recorded live at the Village Vanguard, New York, New York on January 11 & 12, 1974. Originally released on Fantasy (9501). Includes liner notes by Max Gordon. Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Recorded live at the Village Vanguard in 1974 with Eddie Gomez (bass) and Marty Morell (drums), the performances on SINCE WE MET lack the fire of Evans' seminal 1961 Vanguard dates with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian. The album does, however, find the later trio in an exploratory, somewhat freer mood. The pianist's playing is assured and smooth as always, with Gomez supplying smooth support and fluid phrasing. Morell seems to just be along for the ride but does manage to pull off some interesting stuff in his own, understated way. ...

Devil Dogs No Requests Tonight CD  (1997)

Live
CD $11.09  Audio Samples
A posthumously released live album by the '90s kings of New York's garage-trash underground, No Requests Tonight is the Devil Dogs at their primeval best. The sound is bootleg quality, but frankly, that doesn't really matter much, since fidelity was never quite the point, and the gig absolutely smokes from start to finish. The set list covers a batch ...
Coltrane
John Coltrane Coltrane CD  (1957) (Import) Japan

Live
CD $28.89
Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios). This Deluxe Edition of COLTRANE includes a bonus disc of previously unissued material. McCoy Tyner (piano); Jimmy Garrison (bass); Elvin Jones (drums). John Coltrane's albums, especially the ones he recorded in the 1960s, can usually be assessed as either groundbreaking or "ground holding" (that is, Coltrane would develop trails he'd previously blazed). COLTRANE (1962) may fall into the latter category, but that doesn't make it any less satisfying. Featuring the great saxophonist's legendary quartet (pianist McCoy Tyner, drummer Elvin Jones, and bassist Jimmy Garrison), COLTRANE is packed with spectacular playing, especially on the lengthy, winding "Out of This World," the pulsing, Eastern-tinged "Tunji," and the hard bop-flavored "Miles' Mode." Recorded one month after DAKAR, COLTRANE explores many similar directions, and again features the tenor saxophonist as part of a three-horn front line, albeit with baritone saxophone and a trumpeter. It also showcases Texan Red Garland on the first three cuts, while DAKAR pianist Mal Waldron is featured on the final three. The rhythm team of Albert Heath and Paul Chambers gives COLTRANE a more centered rhythm feel than its predecessor, as the bass player's huge beat and elegant harmonic sense set the pace on both ballads and hard hard-driving swing pieces. Drummer Heath introduces "Bakal" with an African rhythm motif supported by bass and baritone counterpoint, as Coltrane and trumpeter Johnnie Splawn essay the chanting melody before breaking into a swinging bridge that is pure Max Roach-Clifford Brown in its steely articulation and sweet voicings. Garland's spacious, laid-back statement sets the stage for Coltrane's swaggering solo, in which he constructs long melodic refrains from splintered thematic scraps. Again, Coltrane's balance of ruminative and expressive materials is a sign of his growing maturity as an improviser. "While My Lady Sleeps" is given a haunting treatment, sleepwalking between an Arabic-flavored vamp and a dancing two-beat release, while "Violets For Your Furs" is a classic, one of Coltrane's most sumptuous and tender performances. "Time Was" finds the tenor alone, strolling along with the rhythm section at a jaunty medium tempo, leading to some of Coltrane's most expressive, probing solos of the date, even as the stop-time devices of "Chronic Blues" mirror the laid-back intensity of "Blue Trane." John Coltrane's Impulse years were the most prolific of his career. His classic quartet recorded volumes of material that dwarfed the output of Miles Davis' legendary group of the same period. This album from 1962, simply titled COLTRANE, is lesser known than works like A LOVE SUPREME or CRESCENT but holds many treasures nonetheless. The epic first cut "Out Of This World" is a stand-alone masterpiece that would amount to an album's worth of outp All tracks have been digitally remastered. Japanese reissue of 1962 album. Silver Pistol/Please Don't Ever Change
Brinsley Schwarz Silver Pistol/Please Don't Ever Change CD  (2004) (Import) Remastered; United Kingdom

Live
CD $18.79  Audio Samples
This two-album-on-one-CD compilation captures Brinsley Schwarz at their musical peak on two levels. The material on Silver Pistol, arguably their best album, is remastered impeccably so that you can practically hear the action on the acoustic guitar strings on "Nightingale" and get just as close to the electric guitar on "Silver Pistol," while the electric bass on "The Last Time I Was Fooled" feels like it's in your lap. Those songs, along with "Unknown Number," "Merry-Go-Round," and "Egypt," were all authored by Nick Lowe, and alternating with some equally substantial contributions by Ian Gomm, they made Silver Pistol about the most dazzling body of American rock songwriting since the days when Neil Young, Stephen Stills, and Richie Furay were divvying up Buffalo Springfield's classic albums between them -- indeed, this CD makes one think of the artistic peak that the latter group never had a chance to reach, owing to personnel problems; and, in fact, Lowe's and Gomm's divergent yet not dissimilar roots-based styles call the Stills/Young pairing to mind on yet another level. And then there's the second half of the CD, the somewhat slapped-together contents of Please Don't Ever Change, any of which sounds like it could easily be among the best work of the band. And even that shows the levels of perfection Brinsley Schwarz were achieving on just the individual, one-off efforts they generated when they weren't shooting for any big targets. (And except for Showaddywaddy, ...
