AT YANKEE STADIUM remains the album most recommended by NRBQ's loyal following as an entry point for those unfamiliar with this powerfully inventive band. This was the release that should have broken them through to a wider audience on its release in 1978. While the band never achieved mainstream recognition, selections from this record like "Green Lights," "I Want You Bad" and "It Comes To Me Naturally" have been covered by more well-known artists (Bonnie Raitt, Dave Edmunds and The Fabulous Thunderbirds, respectively). These covers are an additional testimony to the strength of this band in general, and to this album in particular. Great songs and great players--NRBQ prove once again that they are a perfectly balanced, musically rich quartet. If you need convincing or a place to start, start with this one. At Yankee Stadium album
$12.19 On his 1988 solo effort Talk to Your Daughter, singer/guitarist Robben Ford proves himself a master of sophisticated blues-rock guitar playing. The material is quite strong, and all the musicians perform at the highest level, but it's Ford's stellar soloing that makes this release. Fans of flailing '80s rock virtuosos would do well to check out Ford's exceptional work on Talk to Your Daughter. The musician's colorful yet controlled improvising and harmonic mastery is a rare and beautiful sonic treat. The ...

| | NRBQ Ridin' In My Car CD (1999)
At Yankee Stadium music CDs
$13.89 Most of RIDIN' IN MY CAR was originally released as ALL HOPPED UP.
RIDIN' IN MY CAR, while not a reissue of the band's ALL HOPPED UP, encompasses nearly the whole of that album (minus two songs), plus an additional four numbers. NRBQ has never been shy about reworking and reformatting past works, and this set stands on its own, quite distinctive from its equally strong predecessor. ...
| | NRBQ Scraps CD (1972) Remastered
At Yankee Stadium songs
$13.29 Album number three marks the first personnel shifts in NRBQ. Founding guitarist Steve Ferguson left and was replaced by Al Anderson (who stuck around for the next 23 years!). After the confident sprawl of their debut Columbia records, unsure of what to do with this hard-to-classify ensemble, paired them with Carl Perkins and subsequently dropped them both. SCRAPS was then, and remains now, an easy entrance into a band who make no secret for their love of any music that moves them.
From rockabilly to Beatle-ish pop to jump blues, swing and fractured commentaries--they find a common denominator in all of it. Nothing ever sounds out of place because this band has the skills and taste to make it all flow believably out of them. This is an album filled with wonderful songs like "Magnet," ...

| | NRBQ Grooves In Orbit CD (1983)
At Yankee Stadium CD music
$9.69 After NRBQ's At Yankee Stadium failed to become a hit, Mercury Records dropped them, and it would be five years before the band would have another chance to record for a major label. While At Yankee Stadium was by their standards a tight and consistent set that gracefully balanced commercial appeal with their taste for the offbeat, NRBQ seemed content to follow their own path under Bearsville's sponsorship, and Grooves in Orbit sounds more like one of the band's Red Rooster sessions than a bid for a wider audience. The opening track, "Smackaroo," is an irresistible rocker once you get past the fact that the lyrics are almost completely unintelligible, and the decision to close out the sides with "Daddy-'O'" (a frantic polka number recorded in front of a well-oiled audience) and "Hit the Hay" (an ode to sleep) suggests NRBQ were happily resigned to life as a cult item. However, if you want evidence to back up the old saw that NRBQ are the greatest bar band on Earth, Grooves in Orbit will do just fine -- between the rollicking and self-descriptive "12 Bar Blues," the glorious ...

| | DJ Rap Touching Bass CDs (2003)
At Yankee Stadium album
$17.29 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ Rap.
The first release to really approximate a live DJ Rap set, Touching Bass is a double disc, separated into one disc of drum'n'bass and one of breaks. After the pop crossover of her first production album, it's clear Rap's in no danger of hitting the charts with this mix, a set of furious hardstep tracks that starts out with a tech edge (Danny C, Dillinja) and rapidly reaches the sort of tempos not heard outside of specialty rooms since the brief reign of hardcore and gabba during the mid-'90s. Two impossibly driving, minimalist productions by Sonic & Silver bookend the excellent Accidental Heroes track "Even When It Rains," just before Danny C makes the first of several more welcome appearances -- he remixes two DJ Rap tracks and co-produces a third, "The Riff." The breaks disc doesn't begin on a good note ("Out There" by DJ Rap and Konverter is weighed down by a weak vocal sample), but for the rest of the set Rap shows as sure a hand with the selection and mixing as she does with drum'n'bass. She grabs tracks from some of the best in the breaks business (Plump DJs, Dylan Rhymes, Phil Kieran, Rennie Pilgrem) and cleverly works in a few nods to her breakbeat past: the Moving Shadow classic "Helicopter Tune" by Deep ...
