For a sequel to the highest grossing musical of all time, Grease 2 is content on leaving behind the far-reaching magnitude and quality of the music that songwriters like John Farrar immortalized. As far as casting goes, Grease utilized the innocent appeal and gifted vocals of Olivia Newton-John and profited greatly from that casting decision. Michelle Pfeiffer is an arguably better actress than Newton-John, and even though her appeal has lasted through generations, she does not measure as well on the musical scale of entertainment. To say that "Cool Rider" is one of the best songs and Michelle Pfeiffer's only solo on the soundtrack is to reveal the fact that Grease 2 is inferior but for a whole different reason -- the songs are dulled. Grease 2, by name alone, begs for a place alongside its predecessor, maybe even comparison. But as Grease featured a collection of classic '50s songs and new songs (some even better than the '50s hits), Grease 2 could not keep its soundtrack from dripping in the heat if not for "Cool Rider," "Score Tonight," and the explicitly suggestive "Reproduction," which is embarrassingly catchy. ~ Peter Fawthrop

Grease 2 Soundtrack album
$10.49 Three of the first four tracks on this double album, "Summer Nights," "Hopelessly Devoted To You" and "You're The One That I Want" all went on to become big hits in the USA and UK for the new disco sensation John Travolta and his co-star Olivia Newton-John. Frank Valli also took the title song into the upper reaches of charts all over the world. As for this album, it lingered for 12 weeks at number 1 in America, and topped the British chart for a lucky 13. Even in the 90's several of these tracks are still guaranteed floor-fillers at many ...
| | Cry Baby CD (1990) Original Soundtrack
Grease 2 Soundtrack CD music
$6.49 John Waters' Cry-Baby goes hand in hand with Hairspray, and is a musical film that will probably appeal more to Waters' fans than fans of musical cinema. There is nothing original or exciting about the music on the soundtrack, as energetic as it is, and its bizarre nature is probably due to the scenes from the film rather than its own oddities. Waters describes it as "music that proved kids knew how to be bad before sex, drugs, and rock & roll," yet there seems to be little separation between those attributes and the concoction of lust and loudness here. Songs like "Doin' Time for Bein' Young" and "High School Hellcats" are no different from rock & roll, except that they sound like weak imitations of songs from Grease. Waters, the master of imitation ...

Grease 2 Soundtrack album
$13.69 Daria shows off her versatility throughout this diverse set, with each selection being radically different than the one before. She displays expertise on the standard "All or Nothing at All," some world music, a Latin jazz piece, Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" and the 7/4 "Feel the Rhythm," and those are only the first five selections. The music crosses many stylistic boundaries but Daria excels in each setting. It is also nice to hear some spots for Marc Russo, the former saxophonist with the Yellowjackets, on alto and soprano. The charming closer, "Dreams of a Tango" (with Rich Kuhns on the bandoneon), is one of the high points of this excellent release. ~ Scott Yanow
News: Title track "Feel The Rhythm" gets Honorable Mention from the Billboard World Songwriting Competition!!!Listening to DARIA as she wraps her silky, sensuous voice around her latest tunes is like taking a drive on a summer day, cruising with the top down as the warm breeze blows through your hair, jazz flowing from the radio. It's a journey that celebrates the vast richness and musical diversity of Latin and world cultures. With perfect intonation, fresh interpretations and pure musicality as her trademarks, DARIA carves a new path on her latest CD, "Feel The Rhythm". Her compelling vocals move easily between jazz, fusion, pop and world styles, seamlessly blending the sounds into a colorful, pulsating whole."I think this CD presents a new kind of sound in jazz," says DARIA. "My voice is definitely stronger and I felt like taking chances and venturing into some new territory. My range has also increased so the way I approached phrasing and rhythm is different." The result is jazz standards and pop tunes spun into something unique. Flowing through a range of Latin rhythms, each arrangement highlights the innovative talents of DARIA and her producers. "On Stevie Wonder's 'Don't You Worry 'bout a Thing,' producer and arranger Wayne Wallace gave it a Take Five influence with a cha-cha beat. I also captured a bit of Carmen McCrae and Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, coming up with an interesting mix on that tune. It just turned ...

$11.15 Artist: Esme MontgomeryCD: A Single ThingBy Jennifer LaytonIndie-Music.comI've never heard backing vocals used like they are on Esme Montgomery's CD "A Single Thing." They're used like an instrument. They sound like ghosts echoing her words and then blending with Montgomery's voice in strong, perfect harmony. They also have the same innocent, childlike quality that Montgomery's voice has (especially in ...
