A year after debuting with the Doug E. Fresh/Slick Rick dis record "Showstopper," the Queens duo known as Salt-N-Pepa hit the scene with their first full-length release, HOT, COOL & VICIOUS. The XX chromosome version of Run-D.M.C., Salt and Pepa traded high-energy tag-team rhymes over funky mid-1980s hip-hop production that utilized break records from the Meters, Wilson Pickett, the Pointer Sisters, 7th Wonder, Grover Washington Jr., and Parliament. HOT, COOL & VICIOUS features old-school anthems such as "Push It," "I'll Take Your Man," and "My Mic Sounds Nice," as well as the duo's previously mentioned first single. The original DJ Spinderella does her thing on the one-and-twos.

$7.59 In getting back to his roots, KRS-One has created a small masterpiece. GHETTO MUSIC is a successful blend of the various forms of music that inform hip-hop. Its samples successfully incorporate dub, soul, funk, jazz, and gospel elements into the musical anthropology of the hip-hop era. The rhythms are steady and the grooves fresh and organic; the lyrics are purposefully introspective and delve into both social and musical approaches to understanding the hip-hop phenomenon.
Perhaps the most sophisticated of KRS-One's early efforts, GHETTO MUSIC attests to the potential that lies within rap music ...

$12.59 "None Of Your Business" won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. "Whatta Man" was nominated for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
These things don't happen by accident, and not just by massive amounts of hype, either. VERY NECESSARY became one of the biggest records of 1993 and 1994 by tapping into the zeitgeist -- the theme of sisters doing it for themselves was the preface for a year in which women exploded all over the pop charts and pop press -- and by underscoring it with irresistible playground pop grooves.
"Shoop," which turns a girl-groupish nonsense word and musical backing into a womanly statement of desire, and "Whatta Man," a deep-soul track that defines the perfect guy as a strong, beautiful one who "spends quality time with his kids when he can," were the hits. But the album runs much deeper.
The sassy grooves on "None Of Your Business" and "Big Shot" are declarations of independence, asserting a woman's right to sleep with whomever she wants to (with protection, natch) and to make all the money she can (a nice little ...
