Following their messy divorce from the Sisters of Mercy, Wayne Hussey and Craig Adams formed a new band, the Sisterhood. Before they got going though, more legal squabbling with the Sisters camp caused another name change. Now dubbed the Mission, they debuted with a pair of singles that set the stage for their full-length LP, GOD'S OWN MEDICINE. As the Mission, Hussey and Adams (along with the former drummer from the vastly underrated Red Lorry Yellow Lorry and the guitarist from the largely unknown Artery) explored a more prominent "rock" sound than any of their pedigrees would suggest. That said, the synthesizer washes and Hussey's end-on-end lyrical metaphors still toed the goth line pretty closely.
Standouts include "Wasteland," which quickly recovers from it's stunningly pompus, spoken-word intro, evolving a steady rhythm of chugging drums offset by dueling guitars, and "Burning Bridges," a pushy, insistent track that highlights Simon Hinkler's crystalline guitar work. Also of note is the slithering rocker "Blood Brother," which features some of Hussey's more emotive vocals (though oddly enough, this track was not on the original album, rather it was added to the cassette and CD versions as one of the two bonus tracks).CMJ (1/5/04, p.20) - Ranked #9 in CMJ's "Top 20 Most-Played Albums of 1987" God's Own Medicine Music | List Price | $10.98 (You save $0.43) | | Category | Rock Albums, Rock/Pop CDs, Gothic | | Label | UME Imports | | Orig Year | 1986 | | All Time Sales Rank | 36287 | | CD Universe Part number | 1056651 | | Catalog number | 830603 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Oct 25, 1990 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | Tim Palmen | | Recording Time | 57 minutes | | Additional Info | United Kingdom |

| | Mission U K First Chapter CD (1987)
God's Own Medicine songs
$9.19 Mission fans should be thankful. Most bands that come up to the majors the hard way (i.e., on an indie label, releasing singles only) usually ignore their previous output once the big corporate label is buying the drinks. For the Mission, whose reputation was built on those early singles, it was a necessity to make them easy for fans to get their hands on. Polygram was more than willing to saturate the U.K. market with Mission releases, and what better way than to repackage old singles from a minor label and release the collection right after a successful debut? So, on the one hand it feels a bit like cashing in, but on the other The First Chapter is a pretty good ...
| | Mission U K Children CD (1988) (Import) United Kingdom
God's Own Medicine album
$10.55 Most bands usually wait two or three albums before the "big statement," but this is the Mission. Sure, their debut was well received (at least by fans and record buyers) and was full of big, dramatic moments and over the top production, but nothing would equal the band's reach on its follow-up, Children. Kicking off with one of the longest fade-ins in rock history, ...

God's Own Medicine album
$17.95 Daevid Allen was the leader of psychedelic legends Gong. This album consists of recordings made in 1977 when Allen (who had left the group) was rehearsing for a Paris reunion with Gong.
This is the first volume in what is promised to be a series of 20 CDs of archival Daevid Allen-related material, each disc pressed in a limited run of 1,000 copies and packaged in a simple yet elegant black-and-white cardboard sleeve. And the Bananamoon Obscura series is off to a very fine start with this release documenting a little-known period in Allen's career. Listeners are treated to 50 minutes worth of Daevid ...

| | Jenn Grinels Little Words CD (2008)
God's Own Medicine album
$12.39 ALBUM REVIEWS:"Jenn Grinels is at the forefront of San Diego's singing elite. When it comes to chops and the balance of command, control, and freedom that go into exceptional singing, this lady stands alone. Even her softest, most subtle lyrical licks are as gripping as the powerfully belted lines that are emblematic of her art." - The San Diego TroubadourâMan, can Jenn Grinels sing! Her sultry voice growls at the hot, slow parts in song one, âMisery,â and it rings out like gold in the quick-paced and heartfelt track three, âNo Better.â The album is all sweet acoustic tracks, and even in that simple form she makes each song interesting, using deft transitions between the highest and lowest notes of her considerable range. And she embraces genuine, original lyrics without the smartypants overtones or anger of her indie-girl-group contemporaries. She is the real, talented epitome of todayâs best indie music.â - The San Diego ReaderâJenn Grinelsâ CD âLittle Wordsâ shows just how much fun the DIY approach can be without the âsuitsâ looking over your shoulder. The cover has an proletarian look to it that is professionally done. Inside the original artwork and hand written notes remind one of a bootleg, but then again this belies the professional intent with which this well crafted and very well mastered CD was done. I was loving the CD before I ever listened to it. Listening to it certainly didnât diminish my expectations either. Jennâs voice really has to be heard to be believed. Itâs jazzy in its pacing, soulful in its delivery, heartfelt in its sensuous tone, and the poetic timing of the words speaks volumes. This is a singer that you know will be discovered, and soon I hope. [Grinels] is head and shoulders above most singers you hear, signed or unsigned. As one North County Times reporter put it, she is one of the top singers on a very short list in San Diego, or anywhere else for that matter, and these old ears have heard a ton or two of songbirds over the years. It will be interesting to see how the future unfolds for this soon-to-be legendary singer.â- Full Value Review âLittle Words- Big VoiceââGrinels' debut CD is a delightful blending of dramatic performance and wonderful singing. Add in the strong set of songs she's written for this first release, and you've got as good an album as any acoustic performer has released in San Diego this year. The guitar-and-vocals tracks sound every bit as complete as those with the full band ---- testament to the power of Grinels' singing. On "Closure" it all comes together in perfection ---- a tightly constructed song, Grinels expertly ...
