| Cucumber Castle is refreshingly different This has to be the most unusual album in the entire Bee Gees catalog. Since it is only Maurice and Barry you really get a more open album and really get to hear Maurice and Barry working together. This was the soundtrack to their tv special of the same name. It was a fun and humorus special and the music reflects that enthusiasm. That is not to say that the music is not serious it has many well crafted tunes and is well worth adding to your early bee gees collection! By chikarl (San Francisco, CA) |
 | So Good This is awsome. I loved it. But then again I love everything they do. By a reviewer (Charleston, WV, USA) |
| Very Pleased! Excellent Item Anything That has the "Bee Gees" involved has to be great... but I had my doubts about "Cucumber Castle".... guess what, this is my favorite CD right now. The Ballads are so beautiful. OK, this CD is missing Robin, but the Bee Gees sound still comes through just as pure. *It also looks like Maurice and Barry had fun with this. | A very good CD/ album- buy it Cucumber Castle is wonderful. The Bee Gees without Robin Gibb are still great and the songs are wonderfully crafted and sung. I cannot imagine a more underrated band than the Bee Gees. And as every year passes, you realize more and more just how good the Bee Gees are. Remember evey album/CD are all original Gibb compositions and some smash songs were given to other artists. Their harmonies and melodies are simply amazing. By GDC9DREAM (Toms River, NJ) |
| Two out of three ain't bad! When "Robin's Reign" was a disappointment and Barry and Maurice scrapped their solo efforts, "Cucumber Castle" carried on the Bee Gees name. Extremely typical in their ballad approach throughout this album, they still manage to bring in a few gems...and a few duds. "If Only I Had My Mind On Something Else," is one example. Singing about captains, submarines and an ace in an airplane flying to Spain, might have been more serious in its lyrics as it is in it's sound. "The Lord," "My Thing," "The Chance Of Love" and "Turning Tide" all seem odd and frivolous, as if to fill the album with whatever came to mind. Teenage love songs come to mind. But remember, the Bee Gees were a 'singles' oriented group at the time. They released three singles from this album that went nowhere. Some face is saved by the tempo building "I Lay Down And Die" and an extremely strong blues number called "Bury Me Down By The River," where Barry really belts it out. I only wish they had given credit to the female back-up singers. The Gibbs are, after all, songwriters first. They were paid compliments from this collection by Janis Joplin, who covered "I.O.I.O." and Englebert Humpberdink who recorded "Sweetheart." All in all, a modest, pleasant effort.
