Nico first became known in the music world as a singer on the first Velvet Underground album, and her later solo records would plumb even darker depths than that famed New York band of iconoclasts. Her first solo album, CHELSEA GIRL, however, is another matter entirely. It's a delicate collection of orchestral pop and chamber folk, with Nico's deep, Teutonic voice adding a subtle sense of discord. Like many interpreters of the time, Nico took on tunes by some of the era's most respected folk-rock songpoets (Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, Tim Hardin). Even more impressive, though, are the compositional and instrumental contributions from Nico's VU bandmates John Cale and Lou Reed (Cale would go on to produce some of Nico's finest, most forward-looking albums). Unique in Nico's solo catalogue for its fragility and gentility, CHELSEA GIRL is both a poignant period artifact and a perennially affecting piece of work.
Personnel includes: Nico (vocals); Larry Fallon (arranger); Jackson Browne, Lou Reed (guitar); John Cale (viola, keyboards).
Rolling Stone (9/19/02, p.108) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...The mood remains dark, gothic and mysterious with barely more than flute, guitar, violin, cello and harmonium accompaniment..." Chelsea Girl Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) the best album ever made by anyone This album is amazing. It also has a story. When Nico came to America she wanted to be a singer so she went to New York looking for Bob Dylan or his manager. She wasn't able to get in touch with him but she did meet Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol had her star in the movie, Chelsea Girls. She met up with Lou Reed, John Cale, Jackson Browne (then unfamous), Van Morrison, and Gregory Copeland to make the soundtrack. This soundtrack is the base of the foundation for the Velvet Underground. Nico sings throughout the whole soundtrack. On "Fairest of the Seasons," "These Days," and "I'll Keep it with Mine" you could swear that you are being sung to by a soft little german gothic angel. She was also really hot. Nico and the Velvets. Nico's first album Chelsea Girl was recorded around the same time as The Velvet Underground's first album. Using the same producer and studio, Nico (along with Lou Reed, Sterling Morrison and John Cale) laid down some basic tracks so Nico could sing along to. Originaly the album was bare with just minimal instrumental input (guitar and viola). But the producer decided to add extra strings,
harmonium and other sounds to the final mix. A few of the songs have the original sound (It was a Pleasure Then). Never mind that because this album is a classic.
Nico's haunting vocals and musical accompanent are perfect. The lyrics (written by Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne
and Lou Reed) are so fitting. A depressing piece of music that's a must listen for any fan of avant-garde pop. Submitted by sirjosephu (Sacramento, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.

| | Elliott Smith Xo CD (1998)
Chelsea Girl
$11.99 The Cinderella-esque climb from lo-fi indie cult artist to Grammy nominee/major label darling must have been a perilous one for Smith, who makes the leap to the big time here after three well-regarded albums on small labels. He's lost none of his bite, though. The production values on XO may be slightly higher, but Smith's vision remains undiluted.
The production, centered around acoustic guitar augmented by keyboards and lush vocal harmonies, recalls pop icons like the Beach Boys (especially on the closing acapella cut), Beatles and Big Star, but this is no sunny Cali-pop album. Leavening the instrumental brightness are Smith's Nick Drake-ish whisper and his thoroughly downcast lyrics, which cast him squarely in the Mark Eitzel/Smog camp of unrelenting self-effacement and misery. The combination ...

| | Nico Desertshore CD (1970)
Chelsea Girl
$10.35 Nico is the German-born model/actress who became part of the Warhol Crowd and a vocalist on the Velvets' first album. She soon left the band and ventured out on her own as an avant-garde soloist. DESERTSHORE, produced by John Cale, is highly atmospheric music making, with crashing percussion and droning harmonium. Nico's decisive vocals wail and wind through an ambient adventure of obscure self-penned songs. "Afraid," ...
| | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
Chelsea Girl
$12.05 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems. Chassagne delivers some spellbinding vocals on "Haiti," ...

| | Cardigans Long Gone Before Daylight CD (2004) (Import) Bonus Tracks; United Kingdom
Chelsea Girl
$11.99 On their fifth album, the Cardigans continue down musical paths few would've predicted based on the bubbly, organ-driven lounge-pop of their first three releases, EMMERDALE, LIFE, and FIRST BAND ON THE MOON. LONG GONE BEFORE DAYLIGHT sees the Swedish ensemble emerging from the rebellious phase of 1998's icy GRAN TURISMO and forging ahead to address love, longing, and loss in more subtle ways.
The leadoff track, "Communication," finds songwriter Peter Svensson and vocalist/lyricist Nina Persson giving a nod to the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses." Tinges of American country twang also come through on "Live and Learn," and the single "For What It's Worth." Persson's soft-yet-resolute alto shows off its full force on ballads "Couldn't Care Less," and "Lead Me Into the Night." The songs of DAYLIGHT forgo immediate ...

Celtic and jam band aesthetics merge to create a meandering, somewhat monochromatic impression throughout this live double-CD set. The first is the lesser element; emerald accoutrements pop up rarely in these largely acoustic mixes, and when they do they seem more decorative than essential. It would be easy, for example, to erase the prominent tin whistle part in "Wandrin' Around" without substantially affecting the song's integrity or impact. No vibrato and not much dynamic expression infect the solo and harmony vocals; even on the a cappella studio-recorded "Gloryland" the rustic Appalachian echoes come across as correct but somewhat bloodless. The band, similarly, purrs contentedly, revealing no rough edges and betraying few outbursts of passion. (The arco bass solo and snappy hand percussion that kick off "American Tale" offer stimulating contrast to this otherwise mellow flow.) Even the audience seems pretty sedate, silent during the music and warmly appreciative, though not exactly hysterical, between tracks. With plenty of familiar titles from previous albums, 5 Alive! offers comfort to the converted ...
