In the late 1980s, thin-voiced females who couldn't sing were quite prevalent in the urban contemporary arena. But thankfully, singers like Meli'sa Morgan, Vesta Williams and Angela Winbush were around to remind us that big-voiced belters still had a place in R&B. Originally part of the duo Rene & Angela, Winbush went solo in 1987 and formed a lucrative partnership with husband-to-be Ronald Isley. Winbush's input proved beneficial on the Isley Brothers' albums, and vice versa. Although Winbush (whose emotive singing is along the lines of Chaka Khan and Alicia Myers) does all of the composing, producing and arranging on her second solo album, The Real Thing, Isley serves as executive producer. And his influence is very noticeable on the electro-funk of "No More Tears" and "It's the Real Thing," as well as softer, more relaxed cuts like "Please Bring Your Love Back," "Precious" and "Menage A Trois" (which isn't an ode to kinky sex, but a call for monogamy and fidelity). For all its slickness and high-tech production gloss, this is an album with plenty of soul and grit. ~ Alex Henderson

It took the Ohio Players numerous albums to make their funk masterpiece, but when FIRE was released in 1974, it proved the culmination of the hard-driving, bass-and-horn-heavy formula they'd been refining since the late '60s. The title cut, which became one of the band's biggest and ...

The follow-up to FIRE, the band's breakthrough smash, HONEY continued the Ohio Players' golden streak by building on the elements that made FIRE such a hit: smooth soul balladry, churning funk, and plenty of freaky, outrageous attitude (due ...

| | Very Best Of Charles Mingus (The Atlantic Years) CD (2001)
Real Thing album
$10.49 The task of choosing the best work of Charles Mingus would be a daunting one. There's literally so much good material in a number of different settings, that the "best" of Charles Mingus could never be contained on one CD. Then again, it is extremely difficult for a newcomer to approach Mingus' multiple recordings and know where to begin. Rhino has solved this problem by offering a one-stop disc with a number of classic Mingus recordings. The vibrant "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting" is filled with hand clapping, horn blasting, and shouting, and it seems impossible that this loose and wild music will hold together for the duration. Mingus somehow manages to ground himself in tradition on pieces like "Tonight at Noon" while simultaneously creating music that borders on free jazz. It's fascinating that an untamed piece like "Pithecanthropus Erectus" can hold an Ellington-esque piano solo at its very center. Another excellent inclusion is "Haitian Flight Song," beginning with Mingus' untamed bass work before mushrooming into a riotous celebration of squealing horns and heavy percussion. There are certain types of jazz that the listener will allow to politely fade into the background; there are also types of jazz that rudely demand to be heard. Mingus falls into the second category. Of course, one could complain about certain items -- like "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" -- that didn't show up on this best-of. But so what? There's more than enough excellent material here to hook the listener to the flamboyant and rich stylings of Charles Mingus. Once this has been accomplished, the listener will gladly seek out and collect other gems. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.
This 11-cut greatest-hits collection of the recordings of Charles Mingus is simply comprised of what are considered to be his best-known titles recorded for the Atlantic label between 1956 and 1959. The title tune from Pithecanthropus Erectus kicks off the set in grand style with fine solos by Jackie McLean on alto and J.R. Monterose on tenor. It is followed by "Profile of Jackie" from the same set. It's followed by the title track from Tonight at Noon, which wasn't released until 1964. Two other cuts from that same session, the wonderful "Haitian Fight Song" and "Reincarnation of a Lovebird," with longtime ...
| | No 2 What Does Good Luck Bring? CD (2002)
Real Thing CD music
$12.79 Continuing to creep out from the shadows of Elliott Smith's legacy, Neil Gust returns with another slab of uniformly solid indie rock with What Does Good Luck Bring?. Like their debut, this set is built around twisting chord progressions and no-frills guitar rock, with few creative missteps or attempts at unqualified brilliance found. A first-rate songwriter in his own right, somewhere between the snakey fuzziness of Lou Barlow and the hook-friendly catchiness of Matthew Sweet, Gust presents a dependable set of gimmick-free songs that are pushed by an understated energy and subtle complexity. That lack of gimmickry, however, might ultimately hinder he and his bandmates from finding a persona all their own, which given the uncontrollable circumstances of Smith's rise to critical acclaim is made all the more difficult. Sadly, one gets the impression that Gust would almost have to make a huge, sweeping artist statement to avoid simply being known as "the guy who used to be in Elliott Smith's other band," which is unfortunate, because albums as solidly varied as What Does Good Luck Bring? deserve better. ~ Matt Fink
After the demise of Heatmiser, Elliott Smith continued with his solo career. Co-songwriter and co-front man Neil Gust, still very much into the power of a rock band, formed a new outfit, No. 2, with one-time ...
