Parliament: Garry Shider, Glen Goins (vocals, guitar); William "Bootsy" Collins (vocals, bass, drums); George Clinton, Calvin Simon, Fuzzy Haskins, Raymond Davis, Grady Thomas (vocals); Michael Hampton (guitar); Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, Rick Gardner, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker (horns); Bernie Worrell (keyboards, synthesizers); Cordell Mosson (bass); Jerome Brailey, Gary "Mudbone" Cooper (drums, percussion); Debbie Edwards, Taka Kahn (background vocals). Recorded at United Sound, Detroit, Michigan & Hollywood Sound, Hollywood, California. Come 1976, and Parliament got up to its usual tricks in that particular incarnation -- right down to opening backwards-masked vocal weirdness plus sci-fi scenarios in the "Prelude," where "funk is its own reward." With Bernie Worrell and Fred Wesley splitting the horn arrangements and Clinton and Bootsy Collins taking care of the rest, the result is a concept album of sorts you can dance to. The clones get up and do their thing throughout, and if it's not The Wall, then that's all to its benefit. The immediate downside of Clones is that it's a fairly one-note record -- every groove can just about be exchanged for any other one, unlike the wider variety apparent on other releases. Given Clinton and company's sheer work rate, something likely had to give and this is one of the stress points. There are a couple of stronger songs -- "I've Been Watching You (Move Your Sexy Body)" is classic slow jam territory. Not exactly Barry White, but hearing Parliament tone it down just enough pays off, especially with Worrell's drowsy, sensuous horn charts. "Funkin' for Fun," meanwhile, brings the album to a strong, lively end, with just enough in the call-and-response vocals and horns to spark some extra energy into the proceedings. As is the case with most mid- to late-'70s Parliament, things may not be as deep as what was done as Funkadelic, but only those who always explicitly value lyrical worth have any cause to complain. Listening to the silly squeals and burbles on "Dr. Funkenstein" itself is pure fun with sound, while the good doctor's speech is scientific craziness. As one voice says out of nowhere, "Kiss me on my ego!" Special bonus -- the utterly goofball cover photo, one of P-Funk's best. ~ Ned Raggett Following closely on the heels of MOTHERSHIP CONNECTION, the group's undisputed high-water mark, THE CLONES OF DR. FUNKENSTEIN furthers George Clinton's conceptual and musical master plan to funkify the world. THE CLONES unravels the Funk Mob's cosmology and populates it with a cast of mythological characters that includes Starchild (introduced on MOTHERSHIP) and the Funk overlord himself, Dr. Funkenstein. By this album, Parliament have almost completely moved away from the guitar-dominated psychedelic soul of their early '70s output and entrenched themselves in the realm of lighter, horn and keyboard-driven experimental dance music. While weakened by over-conceptualization and Parliament's sometimes too-goofy sense of humor--qualities that would seriously mar the group's later output--this disc is nonetheless full of freaky, utterly original jam-formula compositions bolstered by outstanding musicianship. "Do That Stuff" and "I've Been Watching You" are highlights. Though old school P-Funk fans may see this record as Parliament's bid for the commercial mainstream, it is still impossible to deny the unique, exuberant music within.

Do That Stuff! Only a few months after 'Mothership Connection' changed our ever funkin' lives, came this full strength funk explosion. 'Children Of Production' is the cut! Check out that horn arrangement, and could those voices and the rhythm section be any tighter. Of course, 'Gamin' On Ya' and the James Brown-esk, 'Dr. Funkenstein' are groovers, but it's Glenn Goins who steals the show on '...Sexy Body', 'Gettin' To Know You', and the concert finale anthem: 'Funkin' For Fun'. This is one totally hot record. Bernie Worrell and Bootsy Collins' arrangements and overall music directing is so strong here. A Real Funk Classic! Submitted by St.Dvy (Windham, Me.) The daddy cools of REAL funk This is what I call REALL FUNKY MUSIC..from the depths of James Brown projected into the future....NO whimpy, disco-duck cum YMCA sucker stuff here. "Everytjin's on the one", "Dr. Funkenstein", etc. are the ESSENCE of bass-line funky music. It's a pity that funk had to transform into the whimpiest of disco!! :(( Submitted by dragster (Sydney, NSW, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
