SHOOT OUT AT THE FANTASY FACTORY is the second of Traffic's expanded line-up studio albums, following 1971's THE LOW SPARK OF HIGH-HEELED BOYS. The five extended pieces here have little in common with the pastoral, psychedelic folk-pop of Traffic's first four albums, betraying instead Steve Winwood's roots in the Spenser Davis Group and foreshadowing his later solo success in the '80s. Traffic toured constantly before recording FANTASY FACTORY, and the album's extended grooves are clearly born of these performance experiences.
The band's rhythm section was the famed Muscle Shoals Studio bass and drums team of David Hood and Roger Hawkins. But the character of the songs does not depend solely on rhythm. This material is highly inventive and memorably melodic, showcasing Winwood's passionately soulful singing. Throughout, Chris Wood's saxophone and flute are a supple foil to Winwood's voice. FANTASY FACTORY--along with the live albums of the same era--effectively represents this expanded incarnation of Traffic and the jazz-influenced, extended jam format they were focusing on at the time.

Rolling Stone (07/24/03, p.93) - 3 out of 5 stars - "...Imbues the jazz rock of LOW SPARK with R&B balladry....tracks such as the pensive "Evening Blue" show a band at the height of its powers." Shoot Out At The Fantasy Factory Music Traffic Shoot Out At The Fantasy Factory Songs Shoot Out At The Fantasy Factory Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) Flawed But Still Good Although the band's extensive touring prior to the recording sessions for this album may have contributed to the overall feel of the record, there was a need for a little more editing down the length of the 5 songs. "Roll Right Stones" could have been a GREAT Traffic tune if it was about 3 or 4 minutes shorter. "Evening Blue" and "Tragic Magic" are also examples of the band's extended jams that tend to become less appealing as the time drags on. The title cut, which opens the album along with the album's closing cut "(Sometimes I Feel So) Uninspired", save the record from being blown off as a bunch of high musicians jamming in the studio, although both are somewhat extended.
Taken as a whole, the album could never live up to the hype of the follow up to "Low Spark" but the band gave it a hell of a try. The original album jacket design even had the two cut corners like its predecessor. Submitted by Chuck (Omaha, NE, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 3 of 4 found this helpful.
Underrated When most people think about Traffic, albums like "Mr. Fantasy", "John Barleycorn Must Die", etc. come to mind and "Shoot out....."?...in the forgotten box! This album is a real masterpiece of jazz-rock-psychedelic tunes with a relaxing attitude. The production is rather clean too given the times the original was recorded.
Steve Winwood's way or writing the lyrics might have changed since the days of Mr. Fantasy, but overall, the end product is a must in any rocker's music library. Submitted by Rob the OZ (Sydney, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.

Shoot Out At The Fantasy Factory album
$44.15 Indie rock girl group Magneta Lane could very well be a modern day version of the Shangri-Las. They have the sass appeal and chops to match the intensity of their debut album, Dancing with Daggers. In 2006, pulling off an original and sincere rock sound is a difficult task. Sure, this is only Magneta Lane's first studio full-length album, but their debut EP already proved that they would be taken seriously. There is absolutely no room for skepticism. Produced by MSTRKRT (Death From Above 1979 bassist Jesse F. Keeler and Al-P, the duo zeroes in on Magneta Lane's fiery presentation; Lexi Valentine's sultry vocals and brash guitar style are tailored to Nadia King's bumptious drum rolls and French's creeping bass lines. Each song is snappy, playful, and stylish, and that's what makes Dancing with Daggers work so well. Magneta Lane do not go over the top. They keep things clean in the midst of daydreaming about the mystical and the magical--dreams of European fiestas ("Carnival in Spain"), cheating on love for the sake of fame ("Artistic Condition,") and looking into life's crystal ball ("Secrets Aren't So Bad.") Even the album's artwork portrays a mysterious, Victorian era-influenced sense of space and time, complete with Magneta Lane in colorful corsets and ruffles while rich reds and pinks dress the album's background. The album's debut single, an anthemic gunslinger entitled "Broken Plates," gallops in with blazing guitars, once again supporting Magneta Lane's earnest effort in making an interesting and entertaining rock sound. They lead the pack of new millennium girl groups while giving their male counterparts some fierce competition. Magneta Lane is YOUR band--smart and sexy like old Hollywood, and rebellious and surefire like classic punk ...
