| One of the Greatest Recordings in Rock The pinnacle of Eric Clapton's incredible career. This is in my view one of the finest albums in the annals of Rock and Roll, Blues etc. By tbgrewal (Los Angeles, CA, USA) |
| An all-time classic A combination of "Layla.... Songs" and "Studio Jams". Although the original, albeit hard to find, "Studio Jams" was better in some respects to Disc II and III, IMHO, it still gives the listener an insight to the ad libbing and freewheelin abilities of both Eric and Duane, and to the evolution of their songs. Whigs Give 'Em All a Big Fat Lip CDs (2005)
Layla Sessions: 20th Anniversary Edition CD music The Whigs' debut album, GIVE `EM ALL A BIG FAT LIP, led at least one publication to call the Athens, Georgia, indie rockers the best unsigned band of the time. The considerable buzz led to a deal with ATO Records and a much-wider 2006 release for one gritty yet poppy and remarkably diverse record. The first three tracks alone range from the psychedelics of "Nothing is Easy" to the garage insanity of "Can't Hear You Coming" to the irresistible power pop of "Technology."

Nitzer Ebb That Total Age CD (1987)
Layla Sessions: 20th Anniversary Edition buy CD music The template for Nitzer Ebb had already been established some years earlier with D.A.F.'s thrilling, rough-yet-clean combination of dancefloor aggression, industrial noise, and lyrical imagery (and vocal stylings), suggesting a combination of fascist rally and hardcore male-bondage sex club. What the Douglas McCarthy/Bon Harris duo did on their first full album was to give it a distinctly English-language bent, as well as drawing on some of the further developments of EBM over time. If the resultant debut was a bit one-note as an overall release, the duo already showed a bent for making sure their concoctions were instantly memorable and undeniably thrilling. McCarthy's singing is less supple and more ear-piercingly harsh than Gabi Delgado's, say, but his seemingly odd quaver actually gives the band a unique stamp, delivering the slogan-like lyrics with the force of overwhelming command. Consider "Violent Playground," which could almost be a Soft Cell stomper with all the swooning romance completely pared away to leave nothing but brute homoerotic force (and appropriate volume). Harris' ear for beats and how to make them really crunch through doesn't let him down -- check out the huge, sudden metal door-slam rhythms on "Smear Body" for a particularly notable example of his ability. If there's a standout track from That Total Age, it would probably have to be "Join in the Chant," with McCarthy's clipped, elliptical words and delivery perfectly suited for the invigorating storm of drum hits and central bass part. That said, there's plenty of close competition, with the quick, frenetic surge of "Murderous," electronic bass and percussion barely in control as McCarthy roars, "Lift up your hearts!," and the equally impressive "Let Your Body Learn" with its use of vocal echo for maximum impact. The CD version includes three remixes as bonus tracks. ~ Ned Raggett

Michael Occhipinti Creation Dream: The Songs of Bruce Cockburn CD (2001)
Layla Sessions: 20th Anniversary Edition songs With this release, jazz guitarist Occhipinti tackled the songs of Canadian singer/songwriter Bruce Cockburn. Cockburn himself has had jazz composition training and many of his songs have jazz textures and complex arrangements. This lays a firm groundwork for Occhipinti's instrumental interpretations and the resulting album is a successful combination of faithfulness to the original works and experimentation. Arranged for a core trio of guitar, bass, and drums with guests, Cockburn's songs are re-created and reborn without losing the spirit of the piece. It doesn't hurt that Hugh Marsh and Jon Goldsmith, who have played on many Cockburn tours and recordings, are featured on the album (in fact, Goldsmith is the producer) and that Cockburn himself makes an appearance. From the wild and chaotic take on the title song to the moody "Live on My Mind," Creation Dream is an album worth seeking out by any fan of jazz, Occhipinti, or Cockburn. ~ Rob Caldwell

Kevin Karrick Sweeter All the Time CD (2003)
Layla Sessions: 20th Anniversary Edition CD music Much of this collection is inspired by my daughter Ellie, including the title cut, Sweeter All the Time, a contemporary jazz groove called Smoothie (very smooth at 6 months old), the funky Rolling on The Elephant (a favorite stuffed animal), Swinging High (on her swing set), The Happy Guitarist (and proud father), and a lullaby called Angels Whispering in Your Ear, something Grandma said happened to Ellie when she was just a few months old.
Thanks is a tribute to legend guitarists Howard Roberts, Joe Pass, and Chet Atkins. Out of Towner is a humorous and harmonically challenging bebop style tune, written about visiting relatives, and I Dig Snow is a folk song with jazz overtones, written about Colorado snow.
Besides me on guitar, the album features trio and quartet combinations with Jesse Lucas on 6-string, fretless bass, Colorado drummer Mark Raynes, Byron Hamer on saxophone and flute, and pianist Mark Sloniker. Hope you enjoy it!

Sativa Gumbo We've Only Just Begun CD (2002)
Layla Sessions: 20th Anniversary Edition buy CD music Sativa Gumbo is a four-piece (Piano, Bass, Drums, and Guitar) jam band based in Southern Indiana. SG has been playing in the Louisville, Kentucky area since 1997 and frequently appears at The Bluegrass Brewing Company, HEADLINERS Music Hall ( headlinersmusic ), Longshot Tavern, and Gerstle's Place ( gerstles ). SG has also played in Bloomington, IN; Battle Creek, MI; Cincinnati and Columbus, OH; and Lexington, KY. SG's music is an eclectic blend of funk, southern rock, bluegrass, reggae, jazz, rhythm & blues, and follows the great tradition of jam bands in twisting and bending musical genres. SG has developed a substantial following in the Louisville area by continually providing an amazing live music experience to their fans. SG's live recordings are widely circulated among tapers and live music lovers and provide an intimate glimpse at what SG does best . SG's second independently produced and released CD "Spread Your Wings" shows off the band's talent in the studio and has received great reviews from the Louisville press. "Spread Your Wings" follows the release of "we've only just begun" in 2002 which featured 73 minutes of LIVE GUMBO for your listening pleasure. Both CDs are available at cdbaby . The March 2002 edition of the Louisville Music News ( louisvillemusicnews ) featured Sativa Gumbo on the cover and included a three page article on SG. SG was also featured on The Grateful Web ( gratefulweb.
net) as the band of the month for March 2002. A raucous blend of Bill Payne and Dr. John inspired piano/organ-playing mixes well with guitar licks reminiscent of Duane Allman and Carlos Santana. The guitar and keys float on the rhythm section, which is led by the genetic anomaly of Vic Wooten and Mike Gordon's bass child and founded on rhythms inspired by Billy Cobham and Carter Beauford. The four diverse songwriters and singers in this band allow SG to transcend traditional music genres, leaving the listener failing to find an adequate way to describe their music. SG comes fully equipped with their own PA (if necessary), a play list of over 125 original songs, a dedicated following, a groove you'll shake your ass to, and a live performance that will have you asking for seconds.
