Chopin: Etudes; Préludes; Polonaises
$13.29 Compared to his contemporary, Maurice Chevalier, Charles Trenet remains something of an unknown in the United States. Put it down to Chevalier's acting and comedic skills, because compared to Trenet, he was no singer at all. And not only did Trenet have a wonderful voice, he was also a brilliant pop songwriter. Both skills are displayed to fine effect on this delightful collection, which brings together recordings made between 1938 and 1958 and includes such gems as "Y'A d'la Joie," "La Mer," and the absolutely irresistible "Boum..!." The sound quality on the earliest recordings is surprisingly good, and Trenet's voice betrays little of the effects of age, despite the 20-year span between the earliest and latest recording sessions represented here. This collection doesn't have much competition in the marketplace, but it's difficult to imagine a better introduction to this endlessly charming singer and songwriter. Highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson

$11.49 | | Robert Ashley Superior Seven: Concerto For Flute And Orchestra/Tract For Orchestra And Voice CD (1995)
Chopin: Etudes; Préludes; Polonaises
$14.69 "Superior Seven" is for a flute soloist and a computer-controlled electronic orchestra that presents seven independent ensembles of various numbers and kinds of instruments. The tones, their octave displacements, the event occurrences (say, of the sustain vocal chord), etc., were originally generated from the word composition of various newspaper ads for "superior" houses. The music is built from overlapping long cycles that generate a sustained aura of great beauty. "Tract," performed here by famed new music baritone Tom Buckner with electronic orchestra, is an orchestration of a work from 1955, and is a serial composition with a feeling for shifting, actually illusionary, harmonic centers. The music seems to float in your mind. (See also Ashley's wonderful ensemble piece for flute and chamber orchestra "Outcome Inevitable" in the collection Relache: Outcome Inevitable.) ~ "Blue" Gene Tyranny
