Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Webern, Boulez / Maurizio Pollini
$24.45 In an era where it's not uncommon for a superstar act to wait three or four years between releases, it's astonishing to realize that Carole King wrote and recorded a strong follow-up to 1971's bazillion-selling TAPESTRY that was released before the year was up! MUSIC was a big commercial success, but anything would pale next to the ecstatic commercial response to TAPESTRY, which was still high in the charts when this follow-up was released. The generically-titled MUSIC didn't spawn any hits as big as "It's Too Late" or "So Far Away," ...

| | Walker Brothers Ultimate Collection CD (2008)
Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Webern, Boulez / Maurizio Pollini
$11.89 This two-CD compilation, assembled from the Walker Brothers' three albums and various singles released by Philips between 1965 and 1967, gives a good overview of their U.K. history without limiting itself to their hits. The sound quality is good if not exceptional -- one gets the sense that another round of remastering would be in order (and while we're talking about sound, wouldn't one like to see a Mobile Fidelity reissue on the Walker Brothers or, for that matter, Scott Walker's best solo stuff?). And the track order isn't chronological -- their two best-known songs, which were not their first two U.K. singles -- occupy the opening two slots on disc one. So this set is lacking in some attributes that one would, ideally, like to se. On the other hand, all of the songs that one would like to see are here somewhere, and the annotation is thorough if not extensive. For anyone starting a collection of the classic Walker Brothers' material, this set -- which also carries the subtitle "My Ship Is Coming In" -- is a great place to start and finish, assuming that one doesn't wish to own everything that they did during their British period. ~ Bruce Eder

| | Blues, Blues Christmas Vol. 2 CDs (2005)
Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Webern, Boulez / Maurizio Pollini
$16.39 Christmas and the blues might seem at first like a strange combination, given that the music of the holiday season is usually joyful, hopeful, and bright, but no other time of the year is so good at showing you what you don't have, and what you can't get, and if you have the blues at Christmas, well, it's going to be a pretty heavy dose. This generous two-disc set from Document Records features 52 tracks of vintage African-American Christmas-themed blues and gospel pieces (with a couple of street sermons thrown in) recorded between 1925 and 1955, ranging from down-and-out laments and jailhouse moans to surprising (and occasionally risqué) requests for what Santa can bring down the chimney. Highlights on the first disc include the opening track, the joyous "Christ Was Born on Christmas Morn," recorded in 1925 by comedian and female impersonator Frankie "Half Pint" Jaxon; Harry Crafton's "Bring That Cadillac Back" (a Cadillac might not be the best gift if your girlfriend likes to ramble) from 1947; Tampa Red's amazing, ringing slide guitar tone on "Christmas and New Year's Blues" from 1936; and the bizarre, disturbing field recording of "Junior's a Jap Girl's Christmas ...

$13.19 "Windy Fields", Ninth Piano Sonata (2002)While in the central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan, and having just met the person who would become my wife, sketches for this piece began to emerge that were then completed back in the USA. The piece fairly accurately describes my impressions of a fairly barren Kyrgyz landscape that I walked through it, accompanied by my wife-to-be. Despite all its ups-and-downs, the piece is a celebration of life. (Performed in St. Petersburg, FL, 12 February 2003)Visions (1988-89) for pianoThis piece tries to musically describe three visions with differing characteristics and textures, each movement being part meditative and part virtuosic. Due to the nature of the music, the overall composition is too free to be called a sonata. (Performed in Sarasota, FL, 13 April 1991 and Clearwater, FL, 12 August 1995)Four Quiet Piano Pieces (2001)This composition was inspired by a very difficult time in the composer’s life during which many things he had known and come to rely on came to an end. The intense emotions that this restructuring created ended up being sublimated into the quietude of four short movements of moderate speed. The titles of the movements have a nocturnal feel to them as they accurately describe each movement’s mood. (Performed in Gainesville, FL, 10 November 2001)Rituals (1979-82) for pianoWith this rather intense composition, a stylistic breaking away from so-called academic composing was achieved. It took six movements of very distinct styles and with various ritualistic patterns to do so. Many of these patterns are fairly obvious, but some are not, such as the one in the fifth movement, which is a strict twelve-tone piece. It should be added that the patterns were also only meant to be presented with a proverbial grain of salt. (Performed in Sarasota, FL, 13 April 1991)Third Piano Sonata (1980)This virtuosic “wild ride†over the keyboard ended up becoming a doctoral dissertation. The physical limits of the instruments are tested and so are standard compositional structures, which prevent the piece from flying off on various tangents. As much as the sonata is expressively intense, it is also just meant to be a romp for the fingers. (Performed in Cambridge, MA, 6 February 1981)======PETER BLAUVELT (b. 1956) was born in France and grew up in Germany, where he began his studies in composition and piano. In 1975, he came to the U.S., where he studied at Harvard University. There, he received three degrees -- including ...
