$10.89 | | Belle & Sebastian Boy With The Arab Strap CD (1998)
Berio: Sequenzas
$9.89 After 1997's IF YOU'RE FEELING SINISTER made them critics' darlings, Scottish octet Belle And Sebastian ran straight into a series of label woes, and into the inevitable feeding frenzy that surrounds a free agent with their prodigious talents. Their experience with one label exec is detailed in "Seymour Stein" on THE BOY WITH THE ARAB STRAP, which finds the band building on the pastoral pop charms of SINISTER, adding a palpable layer of anger and an increasingly rich sonic palette to their painfully shy tales of despair.
Near-overnight success taught the band a lot. This album moves from their trademark confessional diary sketches (still in abundance, ...

$22.59 | | Caetano Veloso Circulado Ao Vivo CD (1992)
Berio: Sequenzas
$13.95 This live recording captures Caetano Veloso during the New York leg of his Circuladô tour in 1992. Naturally, several of the tracks here are from Veloso's strong 1991 release, Circuladô. But the two main highlights of this CD are the absolutely stunning version of Bob Dylan's "Jokerman" and the equally superb version of Djavan's romantic hit "Oceano." On the latter, Veloso is backed solely by his own acoustic guitar, and the result is nothing else than sheer musical perfection and beauty. These two tracks alone make the album more than worthwhile, but there is a lot more to it -- for example the beautiful "Queixa," which gains a completely new and dramatic string introduction. Veloso also sings the pretty "Debaixo Dos Caracóis Dos Seus Cabelos," written by Erasmo Carlos and Roberto Carlos for Veloso during his exile in London, and "Mano a Mano," a nice tango by Argentine superstar Carlos Gardel. "Um Indio" gains a more robust and direct musical frame, and many people find this version even better than the classic album recording from 1977. "O Leaozinho," from the same 1977 album, does not come off very well, but without a doubt the real low point of this CD is the horrible electric guitar solo that concludes an otherwise nice "A Filha da Chiquita Bacana." Why Veloso permitted his guitarist to solo in this way is something of a mystery, but this misstep is also a very small detail toward the end of ...
| | Neil Young On The Beach CD (1974) Remastered
Berio: Sequenzas
$8.99 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal. It is good to hear Young back with such bite and vitriol, especially after the broken desperation of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. But while ON THE BEACH is edgy and deeply felt, it also manages to sound liberating and relaxed, with glimmers of hope and humor peeking through the spare, evocative arrangements. Inexplicably unreleased on CD until 2003, ON THE BEACH is both unflinching and resilient, and easily stands as one of Young's finest albums.
Personnel: Neil Young (vocals, guitar, banjo, harmonica, Wurlitzer organ); Neil Young (Wurlitzer piano); Ben Keith (vocals, ...
