The departure of longtime vocalist and Edge of Sanity mastermind Dan Swano was too much for the group to overcome on this 1997 Black Mark release. The death metal vocal forays of Swano's replacement, Robben Karlsson, aren't the problem; it's the music that is lacking on Cryptic, no doubt due to the lack of Swano's songwriting and leadership. The performances are still tight, but there are too many aimless riffs -- and an ill-suited rock vibe on songs like "No Destiny" -- that might be delivered with all the necessary fervor but somehow seem flat anyway. All is not lost, however, as standouts "Bleed You Dry" and "Not of This World" generate enough momentum to keep listeners away from their CD player's eject button. Cryptic is in no way a bad Scandinavian metal offering, but Edge of Sanity produced some of the genre's finest work just a couple years before this record's release and, without Swano around, this disc just doesn't hold up. This is a difficult recommendation considering the many superior efforts from this group. ~ Vincent Jeffries Edge Of Sanity Cryptic Songs | 1. | Hell Written |

Cryptic
$13.49 Glory to the Brave is indeed a classic power metal record -- no frills or progressive elements here, just speed-laden, melodic, grandiose anthems about honor, glory, and slaying dragons. And the group manages to generally steer clear of the campiness that plagued bands like Manowar. Of note are the pro-Crusades lyrics of "Steel Meets Steel," atypical sentiments in a genre known for rebelling against religion. Overall this stuff isn't new or groundbreaking, but it's performed passionately enough ...
| | Edge Of Sanity Crimson CD (1996)
Cryptic
$16.05 Perhaps Edge of Sanity's most lauded recording, Crimson is really a single 40-minute song/concept record that is perhaps one of the most interesting achievements in death metal -- a genre that generally doesn't lend itself to obscure pursuits. Generally, every death metal disc is conceptual in its single-minded focus ...
| | Edge Of Sanity Infernal CD (1997)
Cryptic
$16.29 After dedicating most of their existence to defying death metal templates with a string of form-challenging albums that culminated in 1996's truly unprecedented, uninterrupted 40-minute prog metal landmark, Crimson, Edge of Sanity would arrive at the crossroads of their career with 1997's Infernal, their sixth album. Here at last, the ever-questing ...

| | Agalloch Ashes Against The Grain CD (2006)
Cryptic
$12.15 Thanks to a pair of brilliantly executed albums in 1999's Pale Folklore and 2002's The Mantle (plus 2001's none too shabby Of Stone, Wind and Pillor EP), Portland, Oregon's Agalloch became, quite possibly, the greatest American black metal band ever, or at the very least, the first American black metal band that really mattered! Such claims should not to be thrown about lightly, its true; but why measure words when faced with the worshipful fervor with which extreme metal fans embraced the enigmatic quartet's inspired creations, featuring corrosive black metal spliced with delicate folk music into arrangements improbably fluid, majestic, and avant-garde? Oh, and the torturously long waits in between their releases didn't hurt matters either, only fueling the notoriously withdrawn band's budding cult legend, while their supporters dug in their heels for what wound up ...
| | Sadus Chronicles Of Chaos CD (1997) Import
Cryptic
$14.29 Although a couple of subsequently released albums have since chipped away at its all-inclusiveness, 1997s Chronicles of Chaos is still the most complete Sadus greatest-hits set available. Its seventeen tracks were culled from the San Francisco quartet's first three albums: Swallowed in Black ('90), Chemical Exposure ('91), and A Vision of Misery ('92) -- all of them combining to paint a revealing picture of thrash and speed metal's gradual transition into death metal. Since it was in fact released first, in 1988 and under the different title of Illusions, the mostly thrash-based Chemical Exposure is up first, and the six tracks representing it show an already very mature group of musicians -- particularly in terms of technical ability. Still, frantic offerings like "Sadus Attack" and "Torture" balance out these complexities with refreshingly brief running times; and additional fan favorites like "Certain Death" ...
| | Steep Canyon Rangers Mr. Taylor's New Home CD (2002)

| | Enchant Tug Of War CD (2003) Limited Edition; Special Edition
Cryptic
$15.39 For Tug of War, Enchant took a different approach, toning down its progressive metal stance and letting its pop sensibilities bloom. In a nutshell: less crunchy guitar riffs, less screaming from singer Ted Leonard, and more memorable melodies. Because these musicians are capable of fine songcrafting, that's what they focus on for the album. The title track combines a bit of everything: the thundering rhythm section of a metal band, a good chorus, and the prog rock twists and turns that stretch the song to almost eight minutes. But the album's best moments are found in the simplest, shortest songs, like "See No Evil" and the ballad "Beautiful." "Living in a Movie," ...
| | One Of These Days: The Trespass Anthology CDs (2004)
Cryptic
$17.15 Like fellow New Wave of British Heavy Metal acts Quartz and Stray, East Anglia's Trespass were an overnight success that tried valiantly to build a career out of one memorable hit. In 1979, the bluesy and intense "One of These Days" found the working-class quartet being compared to everyone from Deep Purple to Black Sabbath to Ten Years After, but instant fame mixed with the inexperience of youth can be a lethal cocktail, and the group soon found itself consumed by constant lineup changes and industry politics. Long sought after by fans and collectors, ...
| | Das Scheit Superbitch CD (2005) (Import) United Kingdom
Cryptic
$22.05 Given the state of the German group's hopelessly stale and unexciting brand of techno-goth, the most interesting and relevant question to be asked about Das Scheit's third album Superbitch may be whether the title refers to a particular woman, or singer Clint, who sort of looks like Marilyn Manson's mother. A brief glance at the nasty and often misogynist lyrics gracing these songs ("Catpiss" outright demands fellatio of a female subject, for instance) will be enough to prove the first hypothesis true, and then one must try and find some redeeming value in 12 almost uniformly ...
