| | Devin Townsend Addicted CD (2009)
Random Chaos
$12.60 Devin Townsend's maniacal/wacky tendencies duel with his instinct for skull-crushing heaviness on ADDICTED, the second in a planned trilogy of albums he's put together since retiring his ultimate metal band, Strapping Young Lad, a few years back. Anneke van Giersbergen, formerly of the Gathering, is Townsend's vocal partner throughout much of the album, creating a Lacuna Coil-esque effect as he roars and she croons and the guitar riffs ride almost disco- and techno-like rhythms. "Bend It Like Bender" is a particularly weird blend of metal and Hi-NRG, something Rammstein might come up with ...

Random Chaos
$21.94 Deluxe Edition
Anthrax: Joe Belladonna (vocals); Dan Spitz (acoustic & electric guitars); Scott Ian (guitar); Frank Bello (bass); Charlie Benante (drums). Personnel: Joey Belladonna (vocals); Dan Spitz (guitar); Frank Bello (bass guitar); Charlie Benante (drums). Audio Remasterer: Gavin Lurssen. Liner Note Author: Brian Posehn. Photographer: Waring Abbott. Generally considered the band's best album, Among the Living broadened the scope of Anthrax's subject matter with socially conscious lyrics addressing prejudice, violence, drug abuse ("Efilnikufesin [N.F.L.]," a rip on John Belushi), and the hollowness of the music business, as well as a politically correct ode to the "Indians." However, the band refuses to take ...

| | Pelican What We All Come To Need CD (2009)
Random Chaos
$11.49 Audio Mixer: Chris Common. Photographer: Andrew Weiss. One had to wonder what Pelican's signing to Southern Lord could possibly mean. To be truthful, while the band did write and perform more structurally formal material on 2007's CITY OF ECHOES, they retained their trademark post-metal aesthetic -- percussive repetition, overtone basslines, and nuanced guitar riffing. On ...
| | Axe Offering CD (1981)
Random Chaos
$10.49 Axe were a metal rock band led by vocalist Edgar Riley and guitarist Bobby Barth. They released numerous albums in the 80's and have had a cult following ever since. Their two biggest albums were Offering (1982) & Nemesis (1983), their only Billboard charting albums. Offering rose to # 81 in 1982. First time on CD. Wounded Bird. 2003.
Axe includes: Edgar Riley (vocals); Bobby Barth. Personnel: Mike Osborne, Bobby Barth (vocals, guitar); Edgar Riley (vocals, keyboards); Teddy Mueller (drums). Audio Mixers: Bobby Barth; Al Nalli; Andy de Ganahl. Recording information: Bee Jay Recording Studio, Orlando, FL. Kicking off with their raison d'etre "Rock 'n' Roll Party in the Street," Offering proved to be the moment of glory for Florida's Axe. That single remains a great slice of heartland party rock, and the rest of the record ably falls in line. While the quaint "Video Inspiration" berates artificial imagery, "Jennifer" serenades a screen star; but Axe doesn't let such cerebral quandaries get in the way of booty-shaking boogie like the smoking run-through of Montrose's "I Got the Fire" (later ...
| | Paradise Lost Lost Paradise (Digipak) CD (1990) Digipak
Random Chaos
$10.05 2003 reissue of the British doom-metal band's 1990 debut album, packaged in a digipak, features 12 tracks including 3 bonus tracks, 'Eternal' (Live), 'Gothic' (Remix), & 'The Painless' (Remix). Peaceville.
Paradise Lost: Nick Holmes (vocals); Aaron Aedy (guitar); Stephen Edmondson (bass guitar); Gregor MacKintosh, Matthew Archer. Personnel: Gregor MacKintosh (guitar); Matthew Archer (drums). Recording information: The Academy (1989). Photographer: Porl Medlock. On this, their modest debut, Paradise Lost helped define the rules of doom/death metal: grinding, de-tuned anthems of woe topped with death metal-style guttural vocals. Yet, even as they were laying down the blueprint, Paradise Lost was already reaching for realms unknown to their then-amateurish abilities and latent promise. This is evident in all but the most primitive tracks here, but only the occasionally memorable riff or discreet melody contained in tracks like "Paradise Lost," "Rotting Misery," "Deadly Inner Sense," and "Breeding Fear" (which introduces a female vocalist) even hint at the band's potential. In retrospect, Lost Paradise serves as a welcome rediscovery for serious fans, but casual metalheads likely won't see anything worthwhile here. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia On ...
| | Jack Reilly November CD (1981)
Random Chaos
$13.85 Originally released on Revelation in 1981, this was pianist Jack Reilly's third album for that label, but he personally has chosen it to be the first of his Revelation albums to be re-issued. His trio features bassist Jack Six and drummer Ronnie Bedford.
Jack Reilly Trio: Jack Reilly (piano); Jack Six (bass); Ronnie Bedford (drums). This live performance from 1981 is one of the best recordings of Jack Reilly's piano playing. He is showcased with his trio of the era (bassist Jack Six and drummer Ronnie Bedford) on the standard "With a Song in My Heart" ...
