Death metal act Bathory presents OCTAGON featuring 11 tracks including "Born to Die" and "Schizianity."
The Swedish black metal band Bathory have won a lot of respect over the years for their uncompromising style of music, and the harsh sound and extreme lyrics of Octagon pack plenty of shock value. A couple of the numbers deal with such serious issues as world politics and pollution, and "Deuce" is probably the most worthwhile track of the lot. Octagon is probably best suited for hardcore Bathory fans. ~ David Peter Wesolowski
The Swedish black metal band Bathory have won a lot of respect over the years for their uncompromising style of music. However, a little bit of compromise would have gone a long way on this particular release. Even seasoned metal fans might find Octagon tough to digest. Sure, its harsh sound and extreme lyrics pack plenty of shock value. But most of the tunes are too chaotic, failing to make any sort of a connection even after a good number of spins. In fact, several of them are downright painful. A couple of the numbers try to deal with such serious issues as world politics and pollution, but their message is lost amidst all that chaos and noise. "Deuce" is probably the most worthwhile track of the lot, but that doesn't mean it's anything special. No doubt about it, Octagon is one for the hardcore Bathory fans. ~ David Peter Wesolowski
Bathory's rediscovered love for power & brutality continued onto this album from 1995. A first in that it deals with modern topics. It's a crossover styled release offering a brutal yet clean cut of that jugular vein. Black Mark.

Octagon
$16.05 Most of the songs on BLOOD ON ICE were recorded in 1988 and 1989, and remained unreleased for several years. Bathory remastered the original tapes and added some new material for this 1996 album.
Bathory's famed lost album, Blood on Ice, was originally recorded in the late '80s, smack-dab in the middle of the Swedish group's revolutionary transition from its barbaric black metal beginnings to the ambitiously orchestrated Viking metal of its golden era. At the time, the work was deemed far too big a departure by band mastermind Quorthon, who, among other things, shockingly substituted his raspy croak for actual singing throughout -- but, as with any abandoned project, retrospective evidence also suggests that Quorthon was also less than secure about whether his songwriting and musicianship were yet developed enough to fulfill his vision. Shrouded in mystery for the ...
| | Bathory Hammerheart CD (1990)
Octagon
$16.29 Regularly cited as the archetypical Viking metal album, Bathory's Hammerheart remains an unqualified triumph for the pioneering Swedish act. Merging audacious lyrical ambitions with a sense of musical grandeur akin to the greatest epic works in metal history -- among which it is frequently numbered -- Hammerheart is a fully fleshed concept album, and a literate one at that. Chronicling with great detail and drama the Christian invasion of Scandinavia during medieval times, and his pagan ancestors' forceful conversion to the cross, Seth Quorthon became a standard-bearer for an entire generation of disenfranchised Norse-descended teens. In fact, Hammerheart's remarkably ...
| | Bathory Blood Fire Death CD (1988)
Octagon
$16.05 Heavy metal group, Bathory, originally released BLOOD FIRE DEATH in 1988.
Possibly the first true example of what is commonly called Viking metal, 1988's Blood Fire Death inaugurated an incredibly prolific period in Bathory's history -- so prolific and creative, in fact, that an entire album's worth of material recorded at this time would be shelved for years before eventually finding room for release as 1996's Blood on Ice. Featuring dramatic orchestral arrangements backing horrific banshee cries and galloping battalions of doom and destruction, "Oden's Ride Over Nordland" was as powerful an instrumental mood setter as has ever introduced a heavy metal album. It also boasted something never before heard on a Bathory LP: high audio fidelity, for Blood Fire Death was indeed the group's ...
| | Bathory Twilight Of The Gods CD (1991)
Octagon
$15.79 It was almost inevitable that a follow-up release to 1990's watershed Hammerheart album, dealing with very much the same subject (historical themes and pagan beliefs of the Viking peoples), was fated to prove somewhat disappointing; and despite a valiant effort on the part of Bathory mastermind Seth Quorthon, 1991's Twilight of the Gods has often unfairly languished in the shadows of its noteworthy predecessor. For the record, its tracks were even more epic in length and scope, its subject matter even more tragic and depressing, but perhaps the oppressive weight of it all was simply more than most could bear. Still, when ...

We say maybe because in these same pages we have already talked about his previous work, The Immigrant,a musical suite commissioned in 1997 by the UK National Arts Lottery and The Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts, founded by Paul McCartney. If we take into consideration that Lipa founding members as Mc Cartney, Elvis Costello y George Martin were part of the jury awarding this commission, we can state that this boy comes with good references."El deseo" is a composition in which the only instrument used is the guitar, in it´s multiple variations, with multiple sounds in an effort to use all possible techniques towards achieving the goal of expression, even though the final sound is eminently acoustic.. With this album, Thomas has tried to transmit his experiences of how desires can be accomplished ...
| | Day Action Band Wives & Babies CD (2007)
Octagon
$7.99 Harmonies that burn into your brain, as organs glow and spin on the periphery. Austere, tuneful narratives, sung in voices of true character. A variety of percussions."Wives & Babies" was recently named the Album of the Month by Independent Weekly.http://www.indyweek.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A162819"Introductions for Day Action Band reduce its music into something that would seem largely unremarkable: DAB is brothers Matt and Nate O'Keefe, two 30-something professionals who've been toying under the name since 1991. They've got wives and kids and interests in the sort of pop music that predates their birth. Wives & Babies is their second self-recorded and self-released album in two years, and, as with debut Right on Dairyland, the brothers sing largely about long workdays and kids in car seats and finding happiness at home. Not groundbreaking, no?And sure, Day Action Band's records fall on the conservative end of the indie-pop spectrum, with orthodox textures that come precisely and carefully layered in a clean, Jim O'Rourke manner. The guitars are crisp, the keyboards are tame complements, and the vocals are largely earnest and untouched. But this is a large reason DAB's music feels so good: On Wives & Babies, the O'Keefes underscore songs about living with sonics that have been lived in. The sounds have clear, sturdy frames and smart ornamentations, and the songs operate from the same concept: That is, the hooks are big and strong and broad, but the specificity of Day Action Band's songwriting—chestnut-headed kids, relationships with explicit beginnings, ex-girlfriends in Los Angeles—is another level of bait for an audience already nodding along. These songs could be your life, you know, because they're already someone else's.Wives & Babies is a fragmented, non-autobiographical ...
