Peru Y Sus Valses CD music
$14.89 The debut album by the High Kings was issued by the same folks who had a hand in Celtic Woman and Riverdance, and consists of easy listening and buffed-and-polished Irish folk music of appeal to an audience that is comparatively massive for the world music fringe: this album made the lower levels of the Billboard Top 200 album chart. The High Kings is glossy and polite -- targeted perhaps toward listeners who enjoyed the pennywhistle on Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" -- even on tunes that strive to be upbeat and frolicsome. ~ Stewart Mason
The debut album by the High Kings, brought to you by the same folks who had a hand in faux-Celtic abominations like Celtic Woman and Riverdance, brings up an important philosophical question: just exactly what is the demographic for this blend of middlebrow easy listening and buffed-and-polished Irish folk music? More to the point, ...

| | Bill Withers Menagerie CD (1977)
Peru Y Sus Valses songs
$5.95 Following the twin peaks of Still Bill and Live at Carnegie Hall in the early '70s, Bill Withers had a little trouble sustaining his peak of creativity, along with his chart positions. He still made good music and had hits, but had trouble delivering a consistent album that brought him back to the heights of his Sussex work. Finally, in 1977, he delivered Menagerie, an assured return to form by one of soul's greatest singer/songwriters of the '70s. If Menagerie doesn't have the earthiness or consistent brilliance of Still Bill, it nevertheless has a solid set of songs and an easy, relaxed charm that is thoroughly winning. Where his Sussex material was slyly eclectic, touching on a number of different styles, this album is more cohesive, a smooth album that points the way toward quiet storm while retaining a warm soulfulness, largely due to Withers' wonderful voice. Even when the tempo gets sprightly, as on "Lovely Night for Dancing," there's a relaxed vibe and a nice sheen to the production that keeps things even-handed and easy. As such, those listeners who preferred the darker undercurrents that ran through ...
| | Christian Howes Heartfelt CD (2008) Digipak
Peru Y Sus Valses album
$13.39 Amplified violinist Christian Howes has been knocking on the door of superstardom since his much publicized legal and personal troubles, which are by now well behind him. While he should be recognized for his immense talent, his recordings as a leader have been spotty in terms of repertoire. Heartfelt is certainly different for Howes, as he joins forces with pianist Roger Kellaway in an at times romantically oriented effort that displays a split between small-ensemble tracks and tracks with a string complement. Happily, it is not all stringy, as the combo tunes have more of an energized, mainstream jazz feel. Howes works well as a lead voice, and while the strings are tastefully done, they are a bit syrupy and tend to suffocate the talents of the principals. Bassist Bob Magnusson, one of the all-time secret weapons of jazz, ultimately enhances this session. He jumps right into the fray on the Bill Evans obscurity "Walkin' Up," the most effectively interactive piece with brief violin and drums or bass workouts inserted. Stroking the rhythm of "Bernie's Tune," the bassist fires up Howes on this well-worn but welcome standard. A brisk waltz, Kellaway's original "Invasion of the ...
