(1 Customer Review)
On their second album, Texas alt-country rockers the Old 97's consolidated their strengths while improving on the slight weaknesses of their homemade 1994 debut, HIGHWAY TO RHOME. A rollicking remake of that album's standout, "Doreen," shows a band with considerably more road experience under their collective belts: the vocal interplay between lead singer Rhett Miller and bassist Murry Hammond feels far more natural, with Hammond's Bob Wills-like shouts and interjections sounding much less forced, and the songs are both authentically twangy and played with a bit of punkish urgency. The key to the album is found in the trio of covers, which neatly triangulate the band's influences: a heartfelt version of the pre-rock Latin-pop classic "You Belong To My Heart," Bill Monroe's bluegrass blast "My Sweet Blue-Eyed Darlin'," and Jon Langford's "Over the Cliff" sound perfectly natural next to one another, and they all sound like originals. Later albums by the Old 97's would increase the pop and rock influences, but WRECK YOUR LIFE is the band at their most authentically alt-country.

CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Can't Let Go" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Williams's fans waited a long six years for this album, as Lucinda went through music business hassles and a revolving door of producers. The reward for their patience is an album full of rootsy, heartfelt observations that alternately rock and mourn. CAR WHEELS is full of songs about loss and longing, like "Metal Firecracker," "Drunken Angel" and "I Lost It," but even when she's bemoaning her own lack of happiness on the bluesy "Joy," she lets loose with so much passion that it seems inevitable she'll find her emotional center ...

Wreck Your Life CD music
$9.09 The Old 97's make their jump to the majors on their second release without sacrificing any of their fire. Though they're lumped with the country-rock revivalists, they owe more to the punk-inflected sound of Mekons offshoot/former labelmates the Waco Brothers than to the Flying Burrito Brothers. Instead of relying on traditional country instrumentation, their sound ...

Wreck Your Life music CDs
$9.09 Old 97s' effortless way with a hook has always separated the band from its brethren in the so-called "insurgent country" ranks. Choruses, harmonies, and sheer hummability of tune have always been as important to this Dallas quartet as setting the post-punk honky-tonk on fire. This tunesmanship rises to the fore on FIGHT ...
