A Good Thing Lost: 1968-1973 is an excellent best-of collection from the Poppy Family, a great, if largely forgotten, late-'60s Canadian soft rock/psychedelic group. The meticulous songwriting, production, and arranging skills of guitarist/mastermind Terry Jacks (who later had a huge solo hit with the classic pop single "Seasons in the Sun") lift these recordings above the work of many of the group's better-known contemporaries. Singer Susan Jacks has a beautiful voice that sometimes sounds like (but predates) Karen Carpenter, but is eminently more soulful. Although characterized in the liner notes as a "soft pop" band, the Poppy Family was also capable of a somewhat tougher sound that sometimes recalled Surrealistic Pillow-era Jefferson Airplane and folkier material in the Kenny Rogers & the First Edition/Roger McGuinn vein. Throughout, Jacks frames the songs with creative, if often dated, arrangements that compare favorably to his obvious influences, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and Phil Spector. In addition to "Which Way You Goin' Billy," the group's biggest hit (number two in 1970) and a generous helping of singles and high-quality album tracks, the disc includes an alternate, wildly psychedelic mix of "There's No Blood in Bone" and two different versions of "That's Where I Went Wrong" (the second of which features some cool country guitar leads). Overall, A Good Thing Lost: 1968-1973 is a fantastic find -- one of those hidden gems that record fanatics always hope to discover. ~ Pemberton Roach

Customer Good Thing Lost: 1968-1973 Reviews

Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) 5 stars

5 stars Creative soft-rock sound, pre-dating the Carpenters.
Terry Jacks and his (then) wife Susan created a wonderfully interesting product with this album. Each song has something about it to hook in the listener, and Susan's voice is fantastic.

5 stars Poppy Family -Great!!
The Poppy Family have been pretty much lost over the years -'cept for Which Way Ya Going Billy still played on Oldies radio. The use of the sitar of India is real 60's stuff. But in a fun way. I think the best cut is "That's were I went wrong." Sorry they broke up so many years ago. . .

5 stars A worthy Buy!!!
Pure late '60s and early '70s Canadiana at its best... Terry Jacks displays his versatile song writing ability, coupled with the silvery voice of his (then) wife Susan Jacks. Susan Jacks' voice is of the quality of other legendary singers such as Karen Carpenter, but unfortunately has not received the same public recognition. You will not regret buying this album!

Indie rock girl group Magneta Lane could very well be a modern day version of the Shangri-Las. They have the sass appeal and chops to match the intensity of their debut album, Dancing with Daggers. In 2006, pulling off an original and sincere rock sound is a difficult task. Sure, this is only Magneta Lane's first studio full-length album, but their debut EP already proved that they would be taken seriously. There is absolutely no room for skepticism. Produced by MSTRKRT (Death From Above 1979 bassist Jesse F. Keeler and Al-P, the duo zeroes in on Magneta Lane's fiery presentation; Lexi Valentine's sultry vocals and brash guitar style are tailored to Nadia King's bumptious drum rolls and French's creeping bass lines. Each song is snappy, playful, and stylish, and that's what makes Dancing with Daggers work so well. Magneta Lane do not go over the top. They keep things clean in the midst of daydreaming about the mystical and the magical--dreams of European fiestas ("Carnival in Spain"), cheating on love for the sake of fame ("Artistic Condition,") and looking into life's crystal ball ("Secrets Aren't So Bad.") Even the album's artwork portrays a mysterious, Victorian era-influenced sense of space and time, complete with Magneta Lane in colorful corsets and ruffles while rich reds and pinks dress the album's background. The album's debut single, an anthemic gunslinger entitled "Broken Plates," gallops in with blazing guitars, once again supporting Magneta Lane's earnest effort in making an interesting and entertaining rock sound. They lead the pack of new ...
