40 Most Popular American Folk Songs CD music
$20.25 The most striking characteristic of the album is its mood, which is heavily nostalgic, melancholy, and, lyrically, full of reflections on memory, loss, and mortality. (The passing of Young's father and his own experience with a brain aneurysm seem likely influences for the tone here). In this way, it comes close to the emotional intensity of early '70s classics like TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT, though perhaps without the edge and ...
| | Godley & Creme Images CD (1994) Australia
40 Most Popular American Folk Songs music CDs
$9.75 After splitting from English pop outfit 10cc in the mid-'70s, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme put out a string of eccentric but stylish pop albums that yielded a number of hit singles in Europe. However, Godley & Creme often got bogged down in self-consciously clever experimentation when making their albums (for example, Consequences began as a two-song single but spiraled into a triple album), and this experimentation could cause the best tracks on these albums to get buried. Thus, Images is a welcome way to sample the duo's hits as well as the well-crafted pop songs that were often overlooked on their albums. The highlight is the international smash hit "Cry," a lush ballad about heartbreak that puts aside cleverness and sonic trickery to create an accessible song with true emotional power. Other highlights include "An Englishman in New York," a 10cc-styled tune that explores the Big Apple through the eyes of weary and bewildered foreigner, and "My Body the Car," a catchy tune whose rhythmic background track consists entirely of studio-based manipulations of the human voice. "Wide Boy" is another engaging track, a surprisingly hard-rocking putdown of a romantic rival that features some spirited sax playing. Unfortunately, Images omits a few important tracks despite its generous running time; the most notable omission is "Snack Attack," the group's 1981 hit. Also, the eccentric humor that informs many of tracks may turn off the casual listener ("The Party" is a sarcastic putdown of entertainment-biz gatherings that will either tickle the listener's funny bone or drive them to distraction with its lack of pop hooks), but Images remains the best way to sample the career of Godley & Creme. ~ Donald A. | | Rhett Akins Friday Night In Dixie CD (2002)
40 Most Popular American Folk Songs songs
$14.49 Mike Brignardello (bass); Greg Morrow (drums, percussion); John Stacy (drums); Thom Flora, Russell Terrell (background vocals).
Principally recorded at Warner Chappell, Emerald, Nashville, Tennessee and Twin Pines Studios, Mt. Juliet, Tennessee.
With its signings of folks like Ross Nickerson, John Anderson, and Rhett Akins, Audium Records is like the second chance home for those country neo-traditionalists squeezed out of Nashville by both the pop direction of Faith Hill or Shania Twain and the rootsier moves of the alt-country posses. Like Akins' three major-label albums of the '90s, 2002's Friday Night in Dixie blends George Strait and the Marshall ...
| | Freddy Cannon Where The Action Is: The Very Best, 1964-1981 CD (2002) (Import) Germany
40 Most Popular American Folk Songs album
$14.05 Recorded between 1964 & 1981. Includes liner notes by Bill Dahl.
Most of Cannon's best-known, and best, hits were done for Swan Records in the late '50s and early '60s. This CD, however, focuses on his post-Swan career, a period that saw him land two big hits ("Abigail Beecher" and "Action," both here naturally). All but two of these 18 tracks came out between 1964-1970. Some slight surf/hot rod influences show up on songs like "All American Girl," "Let Me Show You Where It's At," and "Beachwood City"; "In My Wildest Dreams" sounded like Gary Lewis, perhaps unsurprisingly, as Leon Russell (who also worked with Lewis) arranged. There's a remake of "Rock Around the Clock," "Beautiful Downtown Burbank" (based around a running joke on the Laugh-In TV show), and the medley of some his old hits that passed for "Charged-Up, Turned-Up Rock-n-Roll Singer"; the 1974 single "Rock & Roll ABC's" is also here. Three of the songs, including a 1967 remake of "Rockin' Robin," were previously unreleased. ~ Richie Unterberger
Most of Cannon's best-known, and best, hits were done for Swan Records in the late '50s and early '60s. This CD can't help but suffer in comparison, focusing on his post-Swan career, a period that saw him land just two big hits ("Abigail Beecher" and "Action," both here naturally). All but two of these 18 tracks came out between 1964-1970, a time in which Cannon's brand of everyman teen idol rock became increasingly irrelevant. This compilation's chief drawback ...
