Re-interpreting Riley, Reich, et al, through a unique Germanic context, Frohmader's second statement for 1994 is indeed an exploration of systemic tones and cyclical chill-zones. One of Frohmader's special gifts is his uncanny ability to wrench extreme emotions and evoke specific mindsets in the listener. This is reflected most distinctively in the titles he chooses for his pieces, which, unlike the arbitrary wordplay most like-minded composers graft onto their creations, fully illustrates the visual images his music conjures.
The opening "Spiral" does just that, as Frohmader sets up a pulsing sequencer pattern around which circle turbulent eddies of sound. CYCLE OF ETERNITY seeks to convey a variety of semantic modes--"Emphasis." a short but effective chunk of drama, "Hypnosis," and "Inexorability," which convulses with twinkling percussives and bizarre jingles twisted out of equilibrium. The album speaks of situational zones Frohmader approaches with both the utmost seriousness and a mad puppeteer's glee. Try him on for size.

| | Chet Baker Last Great Concert: My Favourite Songs Vol. I & II CDs (2004)
Cycle Of Eternity album
$13.59 This 1988 release sees Chet Baker on stage in Funkhaus Hannover, West Germany. This concert is the last authorized recording by the legendary trumpeter and singer. In fact, Baker was found on the pavement outside an Amsterdam hotel, dead under mysterious circumstances, only two weeks after this concert was recorded. Surprisingly, however, Baker's trumpet playing is full of life and energy on this release. It is said that he was inspired by the setting. Accompanied by a full orchestra, big band, and old friends, Herb Geller (alto sax) and Walter Norris (piano), Baker rises to the occasion, performing with what might be termed, "grace and sophistication" on all seven tracks. Playing some of the most heartfelt solos of his career, Baker seems to hauntingly eulogize his own imminent passing. And his tender vocal musings on "My Funny Valentine" ...
