| | Tom Waits Blood Money CD (2002)
Chronometers
$10.69 Blood Money uses the same template and players as Alice (released at the same time) and first saw life as an opera production by Robert Wilson. It's Waits's treatment of Georg Buchner's 1837 socio-political play, Woyzek which premiered in 2000 in Copenhagen. It's a dark morality play performed in a style where a barker from a medicine show is mysteriously transported to the Weimar Republic via Tin Pan Alley. Disturbing and delirious when it's not romantic and hilarious, the songs have a much more direct emotional appeal than the surrealistic Alice.
Contains an untitled hidden track following "A Good Man Is Hard To Find". Personnel includes: Tom Waits (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, piano, organ, calliope, chamberlain); Larry Taylor (acoustic ...

$10.15 Live Recording
Mentallo & The Fixer: Gary Dassing (vocals, programming, sampling); Dwayne Dassing (programming, sampling). NO REST FOR THE WICKED includes the complete 1991 debut album of the same name along with previously unavailable material. Personnel: Gary Dassing (vocals, programming, sampler); Dwayne Dassing (programming, sampler). Audio Mixer: Gary Dassing. Audio Remasterer: Dwayne Dassing. Recording information: 1990-1991. Illustrator: Gustave Doré. As Mentallo & the Fixer's first underground release, No Rest for the Wicked sports a coarse electro-industrial flavor perhaps more complex than their later works. The sampling is heavier than in their later work, such as Revelations 23, and often there are several melodies working at the same time, also unlike later recordings. In short, the effect of all this is a sound lacking the refinement of later Mentallo & the Fixer work. The vocal style and distortion, so often the difficult element in industrial music, ...
| | Weakerthans Left & Leaving CDs (2000)
Chronometers
$11.39 The Weakerthans: John K. Samson (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, 12-string guitar, Wurlitzer piano); Stephen Carroll (vocals, guitar, lap steel guitar, piano, Fender Rhodes piano); John P. Sutton (vocals, piano, bass, synthesizer); Jason Tait (Fender Rhodes piano, glockenspeil, drums, percussion, saw). Recorded at Private Ear Studios, Winnipeg, Canada in February 2000. Audio Mixer: Daryl Smith. Recording information: Chemical Sound, Toronto, Ontario, Canada (02/2000-04/2000); Ear Studios, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada (02/2000-04/2000). The personal remains the political whichever way you want to cut it. Winnipeg's Weakerthans embody this ethic better than most on their second and long-awaited follow-up to their 1998 debut, Fallow. Splitting from Winnipeg's more punk Propagandhi, John Samson is following a more melodic and introspective path while retaining much of the politics. Constructed of vignettes of precise moments in time and place which manage nonetheless to speak volumes, Left and Leaving deftly mixes social commentary with folk and punk rock. This is an intelligent, literate album, and Samson a wordsmith the likes of Elvis Costello or Ron Sexsmith. There is the nice turn of phrase with the line "I am your ...
