$6.75 Also available in a 3-pack with BRITISH STEEL and POINT OF ENTRY.
In the early '80s, a new musical movement, dubbed "The New Wave of British Metal," swept across England. The conspirators include such heavy bands as Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Saxon, and Def Leppard, but Judas Priest is often credited as the originator and leader of the pack. Rob Halford's vocal histrionics and the dual guitar attack of K.K. Downing and Glen Tipton mesmerized metal-heads everywhere. While Priest had been together since the early-'70s, the band's big U.S. breakthrough came with 1982's SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE.
Like most other metal bands that broke through in the early '80s (Motley Crue, Twisted Sister, ...
| | Don Ellis Live At Montreux CD (1977)
Ignition music CDs
$14.29 Don Ellis' final record as a leader (he passed away from a bad heart in Dec. 1978) is a worthwhile effort. Ellis' large orchestra (four reeds, eight brass, one keyboard, two bassists, two drummers, two percussionists and a string quartet) performs six of the leader's originals and, although none of the songs are all that memorable, there are many fine solos. The main players are trumpeter Ellis, Ted Nash on tenor, alto and clarient and trombonist Alan Kaplan. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Venom In League With Satan CDs (2002)
Ignition songs
$17.15 When Venom first appeared in the early '80s, they sent a shockwave through the metal underground almost immediately. Catching the attention of both metalheads and punks, the band was emulated by the former and turned into camp icons by the latter. This was obviously the strongest period of their career, and to celebrate that time frame they have included 20 tracks from between 1980 and 1983 to fill the first disc of In League With Satan, the most complete compilation the band has released in their 20-plus years. Coming on strong with sloppy riffs swiped from Motörhead, drumming that echoed the urgent drive of hardcore, lyrics that would do Anton Levay proud, and their tongues planted firmly in their cheeks, they bashed away at these metal classics with an intensity never felt before in the genre. The sound quality may be thin by modern standards, but the tracks found on the first disc mark a turning point that made an enormous impact on the direction metal went in. The second disc is a much more hit-and-miss affair, with the tracks from At War With Satan being the first of the bunch to lose the raw edge that drove the band's first efforts. Still, several of those tracks are quite potent, with "Stand up and Be Counted" and "Aaaaarghhh" displaying their trademark mix of humor and aggression. Only the latter element carries over into the rest of the album, leaving the tracks from Possessed to stand out as the ...
| | Queensryche Empire CD (1990) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Ignition album
$9.99 With the breakthrough success and worldwide respect that Queensryche gained from their conceptual masterpiece OPERATION: MINDCRIME, how could the band possibly outdo or at the least match themselves? Just two years after the release of MINDCRIME Queensryche reinvented themselves (though certainly not for the last time). While many fans were clamoring for a conceptual sequel, the band returned to a song-oriented approach that was more art rock and less metal-edged.
Now quite far removed from the fantasy and techno-paranoia lyrical themes of their earlier works, the band tackled overcoming social and physical handicaps ("Best I Can"), poverty, and regret ("Della Brown"). Focused much less on the darker side of love that was always so prevalent in their sound, the band was now brave enough to be romantic ("Another Rainy Night" and "Hand On Heart"). While Queensryche lost some diehard metal fans with EMPIRE, the mature sound and tight production of Peter Collins (Rush) saw the band break into the mainstream (and top off at #9 on the Billboard singles chart) with the Pink Floyd-inspired "Silent Lucidity."
