| Punk-O-Rama Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) If you find it, buy it If asked to find one complaint about this comp, it would be easy-it costs more than all the other punk-o-ramas! But, if asked to find another complaint, you'd die trying. This is a great cd with alot of bands, some who are famous now, but werent then. Its an old epitaph records comp, so you Fat-Wreck fans will find familiar ground. If you like punk rock, then buy it. Submitted by a reviewer (Fairbanks, AK, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Punk-O-Rama
$6.29 SHORT MUSIC FOR SHORT PEOPLE features 101 different punk bands performing 30-second songs.
Not that this hasn't been done before on albums like Wood Panel Pacer Wagon With Mags and Bllllaaarrrrrggghhh!-A Music War (which was on a 7" format no less), but that doesn't mean a compilation featuring over 100 bands on one record never fails to entertain. And the advantage Short Music for Short People has in comparison to the aforementioned records is that 80 percent of the bands on here fall under the "melodic pop-punk" classification. That and all the punk rock superstars can be found on here: Rancid, Black Flag, NOFX, Bad Religion, the Descendants, D.O.A., Less Than Jake, the Offspring, Green Day, Blink 182, the Misfits, the Circle Jerks, the list goes on and on. Whether or not the marketing department at Fat Wreck Chords thought that the big names would attract more buyers, keep in mind that every song on here is only 30 seconds and under. But even if Short Music for Short People isn't the best representation of all the bands on here, the fun factor is still pretty high. ...
| | Punk-O-Rama 2 CD (1996)
Punk-O-Rama
$5.85 The second in Epitaph's sampler series, this record was the first to come with the low price cap. While it's a great, inexpensive introduction to the label's heavyweights -- Bad Religion, Pennywise, NOFX, Rancid -- and has some classic punk vets that joined the Epitaph roster -- Descendents, T.S.O.L. -- it contains only one previously unreleased song, DFI's "Thought Control." Later installations feature more unreleased material, but this one has a gem that helped launch the all-star cover band ...
| | Punk-O-Rama 3 CD (1998)
Punk-O-Rama
$5.85 Holy hardcore, Batman! This is the most comprehensive punk compilation you could ask for. Over the course of no less than twenty-five cuts (one of the advantages of writing short songs), the third volume of Epitaph's PUNK-O-RAMA series surveys the state of American punk circa 1998 with such an eagle eye you'll feel like you're right in the middle of the mosh pit. You get a good cross-section here, from old-timers like Agnostic Front, the ...
| | Punk-O-Rama, Vol. 4 CD (1999)
Punk-O-Rama
$7.49 This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
It would be inaccurate to say that Epitaph's Punk-O-Rama compilations cater to punk purists 100 percent of the time. Not everything on Punk-O-Rama, Vol. 4, which Epitaph assembled in 1999, is hardcore punk -- some of the material is simply alternative rock with a strong punk influence. But it is safe to say that Vol. 4 is punk-oriented, and it is also safe to say that the CD is, at five dollars, a bargain for North American consumers -- when Vol. 4 came out in 1999, five dollars was less than one would typically pay for a used CD. And even though not every tune on this disc is a five-star gem, most of the tracks are decent or competent; there are no outright duds. Fans of a hardcore punk sound -- as opposed to poppy emocore or punk-influenced alternative rock -- should have no problem getting into Agnostic Front's "It's My Life," the Dwarves' "I Will Deny," or Union 13's "A Life's Story." Meanwhile, the Voodoo Glow Skulls' "They Always Come Back" is an abrasive, forceful example of ska-punk. And the most metal-minded track is Zeke's "Twisted," which could be described as Aerosmith by way of Iggy Pop. There is even a track by singer/songwriter Tom Waits: "Big in Japan." Waits isn't the first name one would expect to see on a punk-oriented compilation, but "Big in Japan" has enough of a punkish edge to fit in -- the tune doesn't sound out of place, and it is one of the best things on the CD. Punk-O-Rama, Vol. 4 isn't ideal but, at five dollars, it isn't a bad way to get acquainted with Epitaph's late-'90s roster. ~ Alex Henderson

| | Punk-O-Rama 6 CD (2001)
Punk-O-Rama
$5.95 Just in time to coincide with the Vans Warped Tour comes this budget-priced hardcore collection for those who like it hard, short, and fast. Compiled by those punk fanatics over at Epitaph Records, PUNK-O-RAMA 2001 features the cream of this very DIY label's stable, and is a mix of So-Cal legends (Bad Religion, Descendants), Bay Area stalwarts (Rancid, NOFX), and even an outfit from the very un-punk Garden State (Bouncing Souls). Amidst all the chaos are a number of nuggets, including the chugging ska of Voodoo Glow Skulls' "Say Goodnight," the choppy Pennywise/Exene Cervenka cover of X's "We're ...
| | Punk-O-Rama 7 CD (2002)
Punk-O-Rama
$7.49 If it's summer and the Vans Warped Tour is rolling around, then it must mean the folks at Epitaph have unreleased PUNK-O-RAMA 7 on the world. As has been the case so many times in the past, this budget-priced punk sampler goes hard and fast at the genre's fans with a mix of a mix of So-Cal legends (Bad Religion, Pennywise), Bay Area stalwarts (Rancid, NOFX) and one outfit representing the Garden State (Bouncing Souls). For less than the price of a movie ticket, fans get treated to the double-timing tempo, choppy riffs and sing-along urgency of Celtic roughnecks Dropkick Murphys, major label refugees Guttermouth and aggro-rock punks Death By Stereo.
Foreign bands keeping things interesting are Swedish socialists The International Noise Conspiracy (an anthemic "Up ...
| | Diamond Head Behold The Beginning CD (1986)
Punk-O-Rama
$10.05 Behold the Beginning compiles tracks taken from Diamond Head's official debut album, Lightning to the Nations, and a non-LP single, the poppy ballad "Waited Too Long." Diamond Head are at their best when they are also at their darkest, and epics like "Am I Evil?" "The Prince," and "Helpless" (all eventually covered by Metallica) are far and away the highlights. One can hear echoes of Metallica's future compositional approach in these songs, as Diamond Head strings together a series of strong, technically accomplished riffs, often introducing brand-new musical elements skillfully into the songs. Most of the rest of the material -- odes to sex, heavy metal, and the streets -- seems tamer and less original. Even so, Diamond Head is an undeniably good band, and fans of Metallica will definitely want to hear the band who planted the roots ...
| | Glen Washington Get Next To Me CD (1998)
Punk-O-Rama
$13.05 Possessing satiny smooth vocals that rival the king of lover's rock, Beres Hammond, Glen Washington melds sophisticated romance with soothing reggae rhythms. All but two of the albums were written by the crooner and his song-writing skills complement his expert vocals. Although primarily noted for his love songs, the highpoints of Get Next To Me are actually his conscious tunes. "Serious Time" boasts appearances by legendary reggae players Sly Dunbar and Dean Fraser, for a strong melody and uplifting lyrics and "Jah Blessing" stand out with an up-tempo beat and mesmerizing sax-playing by Fraser. ~ Rosalind Cummings-Yeates
Personnel: Dean Fraser (saxophone); Bongo Herman (kettle drum); Fiona Robinson, Pam Hall (background vocals).

| | El Guapo Fake French CD (2003)
Punk-O-Rama
$9.69 One of the highlights of El Guapo's first Dischord release, Super/System, was its extremely experimental nature. It may not have fit right in with the standard fare put out by the D.C. label, but it was quite a solid listen. This time around, El Guapo has taken a much more conservative approach, sounding more like a band than a collective. The songs are more, well, songlike, and there are moments that are more in tune with the current underground music scene. While this change makes the band a bit more accessible, it's still a bit of a letdown. The songs are good, and easy to listen to, but part of the charm of El Guapo's first Dischord release was the way it excelled outside the bounds of standard song structures. Fake French is a solid record, but it's not the mindblower ...
