Not for the faint of heart, the ninth release from the punk-ska band NOFX features lead vocalist and bassist Fat Mike snarling his way through one irreverent track after another, refusing to take anything, including himself, completely seriously. Despite the group's LA hardcore roots, HEAVY PETTING ZOO is listener-friendly. NOFX are a group of competent musicians not afraid to add harmonizing vocals and the occasional catchy melody to their thrashing, high-speed guitar and drum work. No matter how sneeringly angry the band's approach to a topic, there is always an element of tongue-in-cheek humor next to the thought-provoking messages of the lyrics. Discussing the corrupting influence of money on "Bleeding Heart Disease," Fat Mike sounds furious, singing "how money polluted [his] mind"; yet the song continues as a parody of the sweet Broadway tune, "Doe A Deer," including the lines, "Fo-dder for corporations/Sew-ing our lips together/La -- such a nice place to get shot."

$10.39 The first NOFX record released on Epitaph Records is really just a great big mess. A tinny album full of punk-tinged metal riffs and silly lyrics, it shouldn't be surprising that listening to this record could make some people wonder how NOFX ever managed to garner any sort of fanbase. The basics of the band's sound come thorough from time to time, notably in the live staple "You Drink, You Drive, You Spill" ("I say don't drink and drive/you might spill your beer"), but, sadly, a good portion of this record is just plain stupid. There are some surprising guitar heroics -- musically the band is a pretty tight and fast machine -- and there's even a Fleetwood Mac cover, but there's also a lack of styles, shoddy vocal work, and a relative shortage ...
| | NOFX Ribbed CD (1990)
Heavy Petting Zoo music CDs
$10.35 Before NOFX became the fathers of humorous but hard-edged punk rock, they were just four pretty obnoxious Californians with a penchant for fast music and dirty jokes. Ribbed isn't exactly the group's breakthrough into content filled rock, but their typically hard-edged punk has enough dirty humor that anyone with their mind in the gutter should at least get few smirks over the course of the record. Besides the sophomoric gross out of "The Moron Brothers" and the double-entendre ridden "Together on the Sand," none of these songs have even made it into the later live shows of the band, and the reason is pretty obvious. Among tracks about not showering and fake boobs, the group runs through their typical gamut of punk styles, but there is nothing as immediately catchy or edgy as their later work and more often ...
| | NOFX White Trash, Two Heebs And A Bean CD (1992)
Heavy Petting Zoo songs
$9.89 NOFX preceded the 1990s explosion of bubblegum pop-punk by nearly a decade (they formed in '83). But with the addition of guitarist Aaron Abeyta (who goes by the moniker El Hefe), the band emerged near the top of the heap, churning out consistently fun, well-constructed rock with plenty of punch. 1992's WHITE TRASH, TWO HEEBS AND A BEAN marks the Abeyta incarnation of NOFX, and is one of the band's better efforts, overflowing with catchy hooks, air-tight playing, and satiric, silly humor.
The music favors jackhammer bass and drums, searing guitar leads, and crunchy power chords over sneering but melodic vocals. But NOFX distances itself from most punk acts with light, tongue-in-cheek attitude. Playful stylistic mix-ups, like the jazzy, faux-lounge treatment of Minor Threat's "Straight Edge," or the ska-flavored "Johnny Appleseed" (sung in a ...

Heavy Petting Zoo songs
$5.69 Jennifer Kimball and Jonatha Brooke both hail from the Boston area. One is trained in ballet; the other designs children's books. Together, they are the Story, and their ethereal, intuitive harmonies soar through each of GRACE IN GRAVITY's 11 tracks.
Gently plucked acoustic guitar pervades the album, as does an almost New Age sensibility. The title track, the story of a forbidden, interracial love affair told through the Story's twin, lilting voices, received airplay. The a cappella "Over Oceans" exemplifies the duo's unique approach to complex melodies. Kimball and Brooke's voices are captivating, and their soprano harmonies consistently reach the sky. "Love is Thicker than Forget" takes the e.e. cummings poem of the same name and puts it to music. Despite a penchant for overt cleverness, the two women pull off this difficult ...
| | Johnny Clueless Secrets Of The Universe CD (1995)
Heavy Petting Zoo album
$11.39 It's All Good, the latest release by Minneapolis rockers, gb leighton, is a hook - heavy 12-song disc filled with honest, soulful, rock 'n' roll of the best kind. From the full and mature sound of the first cut, 'Most Important Night Of My Life,' to the boardwalk rock of 'Fly My Plane,' and the roots flavor of 'County Road,' It's All Good is rock music reminiscent of John Mellencamp and Bruce Springsteen, yet singularly gb leighton. Displaying his growth as a songwriter, It's All Good comes straight from the heart of a true musician and showcases good old fashioned rock 'n' roll; as was Leighton's intention. "We rocked this one up a little bit more, went a little heavier on the guitars. We're making it sound a little more rock than my previous albums," he explained. Recorded in Minneapolis and ...
