Alternative Press (8/96, p.92) - 3 (out of 5) - "...This Riverside, California septet punctuates its double-time 'skacore' with tons of percussion and blasts of sax, trumpet and trombone...for all its hardcore intensity the actual mood of FIRME is energetic, lively and upbeat..." Option (7-8/96, p.139) - "...VGS just wants everybody to jump into the mosh pit and have fun..." Voodoo Glow Skulls Firme Songs Firme Review

| | Suicide Machines Destruction By Definition CD (1996)
Firme CD music
$8.49 In the late '70s and early '80s, punk rock fell into two main categories: angry sociopolitical agitators (the Dead Kennedys, the Clash, T.S.O.L.) and more escapist bands like the Ramones, the Dickies, and the Damned. The Suicide Machines essentially fall into the latter category. Recalling punk's glory years but sometimes adding touches of ska and reggae, Destruction by Definition is an CD characterized by its infectiousness and reckless ...
| | Voodoo Glow Skulls Firme CD (1995)
Firme music CDs
$9.89 All songs written by Voodoo Glow Skulls except "Charlie Brown" (traditional).
Released in both English and Spanish versions, Voodoo Glow Skulls' 1995 effort may have been one of the high points in popularity for the seven-member ska-punk outfit. Unlike some more laid-back performers in the genre, and coming from a time before the style was commercially successful, Voodoo Glow Skulls are a bit more heavy-handed on the punk part of the mix, resulting in consistently fast-paced and chugging song structures that occasionally erupt into triumphant horn breakdowns and chanted group vocals. The unfortunate aspect of this equation is that the band really isn't that great at punk rock, and the tracks tend to get muddled on a few occasions, though the group's ska stylings very nearly save the day a number of times. A cover of the traditional "Charlie Brown" and a few Spanish numbers come off pretty well, but at other points the band is just too juvenile to really make an impact. The disc also includes "Fat Randy," one of the group's more convincing ska-punk hybrids, whose kinetic horn parts and metal choruses earned it a bit of airplay in the mid-'90s. This is a record that will probably not appeal to all that many folks, and is better focused on "the kids" whose punk rock-loving hearts will accept just about anything. Firme is not a completely awful record, but it is a bit too silly and undirected to still be affecting. ~ Peter J. D'Angelo

$9.95 Less Than Jake's major-label debut, Losing Streak, is a reasonably engaging collection of frenzied, party-ready metallic ska-punk, but the group doesn't offer enough personality or hooky songs to distinguish themselves ...
| | Say Anything In Defense Of The Genre CDs (2007)
Firme CD music
$11.29 Say Anything is nothing if not ambitious. The band's first album, IS A REAL BOY, is a rock opera complete with characters, a storyline, and grand theatrical flourishes. Their sophomore release, 2007's IN DEFENSE OF THE GENRE, is a sweeping double album that finds lead singer and songwriter Max Bemis breaking away from his punk-pop roots into stylistically adventurous territory. Whether it's churning post-punk ("Skinny, Mean Man"), swinging show tunes ("That Is Why"), orchestral psychedelic ballads ("Retarded ...
| | Rachel's Full On Night CD (2000)
Firme music CDs
$10.59 The 14-minute track "Full on Night" originally appeared on the first Rachel's album, HANDWRITING, in 1996. While touring to support that album, the band found that, live, the song had begun to mutate as it was played slightly differently, night after night. After completing the tour, they re-recorded it, incorporating these changes. Dubbed the "Recension mix," this 12 + minute version opens the FULL ON NIGHT EP.
Initially, the two versions are similar, certainly identifiable as the same basic song, though the "Recension mix" is a little slower, a little cleaner, and has a little less ambient noise. As it progresses, "Recension" begins to take on more free-form, experimental aspects--strange, wavering strings and a grinding guitar line, underpinned by a shuffling beat. For the EP's second track, "The Precise Temperature of Darkness," electronic noiseniks Matmos take the "Recension mix" and radically rework it into an eerie, 18-minute long deconstruction. It's full of clicks, scrapes, buried voices, and, yes, the occasionally recognizable snippet of "Full on Night," along with some blistering white noise, hyper-distorted ...

| | Antonio Carlos Jobim 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection CD (2005) Remastered
Firme music CDs
$6.75 It is not an overstatement to call Antonio Carlos Jobim one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. His mixture of jazz, samba, folk, and classical shadings, into a form later dubbed bossa nova, would reverberate well beyond his native Brazil and make an impact on most popular genres. In addition to his intriguing stylistic blend, rhythmic sophistication, and dynamic intensity (he sang and played piano and guitar very softly, but with great passion), Jobim was a master songwriter, crafting melodies so sweet and memorable that they have become a permanent part of the Americas' songbook.
Naturally, a 12-track album is going to leave out a lot of important material, but every track here is a classic. Jobim's "The Girl from Ipanema," which broke the bossa nova craze in the States, features saxophonist Stan Getz, vocalist/guitarist Joao Gilberto and his wife, vocalist Astrud Gilberto. There's also the lilting "Desafinado," the mesmerizing "Samba de Uma Nota So (One Note Samba), "Wave" (with beautiful arrangements by Claus Ogerman), and "Passarim" (a tune from 1987 that, remarkably, holds up to Jobim's '60s work). The disc is an excellent starting point for exploring the work of this innovative songwriter and performer.
