There was always something a little different about Rancid. Though they came into the public eye in the mid-'90s California semi-punk wave that included Green Day and Offspring, Tim Armstrong, Lars Frederiksen and company tackled the punk path more earnestly, with a greater sense of commitment than their peers. If they garner comparisons to the Clash, well, that's just another way of saying they have a social conscience and a sense of history.

In Clash terms, LIFE WON'T WAIT is Rancid's Sandinista. They've always included a bit of ska and reggae into their music, but this is their most stylistically diverse record to date, exploring the reggae influence much more extensively, and incorporating other instruments (harmonica, keyboards, horns, even steel drums) into their guitar-based approach. Though they're still as rough around the edges as any punk-derived band should be, the Rancid boys retain an undeniable pop sensibility that comes out in their infectious, eminently tuneful compositions. LIFE WON'T WAIT is the band's most mature, accomplished release.

Rolling Stone (7/9-23/98, p.132) - 4 Stars (out of 5) - "...More than anything else, LIFE WON'T WAIT evokes the Clash's SANDINISTA!--but for all the right reasons....an exhilirating punk-rock record, one that delves into ska, blues and reggae..."
Spin (7/98, pp.121-122) - 7 (out of 10) - "...Success seems to agree with Rancid's songwriting. Their world, like their sound, has gotten bigger....LIFE WON'T WAIT vacation into reggae textures feels well-traveled and adventurous especially when Armstrong's singing faster than a steel drum..."
Entertainment Weekly (7/10/98, p.76) - "...This California quartet may ape some of the poppier punk moves of their most obvious forebears, the Clash, but like that seminal band, Rancid know how to leaven rage with buoyant tunefulness." - Rating: A-

5 stars strummer tribute
I had heard that this was intended to be a tribute album to Joe Strummer. This is the greatest album they ever made, puts me in a good mood, whatever the problems in my life.

5 stars come on
so its not as good as rancid '93 but they cant make the same stuff up and expect results, not really emo tho..just a little different for a straight up punk band out of gilman street, i mean if you were young enough to see an op ivy show back in the day you would never want to see rancid again

5 stars i agree that its not the best
they have a point about it not living up to there past cds, it was a major dissapointment, but try to get enjoyment from the songs that are good on this album, at least its not as bad as indestructibile

3 stars Both reviewers below are stupid.
This doesn't sound emo. If you think this sounds emo, you don't know what music is and you're an ignorant fool that thinks he's "omg so punx0r" because he's bashing Rancid for being popular. They're not sell-outs either. They are still a good band, and they're still making decent music. Okay so I'll admit that the Fall Back Down video off of Indestructible was a mistake, but 'Life Won't Wait' is an amazing album. It's got tons of reggae and ska influenced songs, and even a hip-hop sounding one. Of course it's got Rancid's signature, catchy almost pop-but-not-quite punk on it. It wouldn't be a Rancid album without that. And yes I'm a fan of Operation Ivy aswell, so don't even say "oMg u R pOz3r UP TEH PUNX!1!!!" to me. :/

I REMEMBER MILES won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. This stunning album is Shirley Horn's loving tribute to her friend and colleague, the legendary late Miles Davis. Davis was so taken by Horn's first album EMBERS AND ASHES that he forced The Village Vanguard to let her virtually-unknown trio open for him during his 1961 run there. ...

Percussionist/producer Gota Yashiki's pop résumé -- everything from playing on Seal's "Kiss from A Rose" to creating all the instrumentation for Sinéad O'Connor's "Nothing Compares to U" -- informs us of his deep sense of sonic texturing, but hardly prepares us for the intense acid jazz experience his own band generates. While the groove on Let's Get Started is non-stop retro-styled funk (complete with wah wah, Fender Rhodes harmony, and dense electronic beats) throughout, the real joy of this ...

The messy end of Curved Air finally behind her, Sonja Kristina all but disappeared from the scene for a couple of years, before finally making a low-key comeback at the head of a new band, Escape. It was a tentative venture. Early gigs saw the band performing primarily to veteran fans who'd have preferred to hear their old favorites; it took time for a younger audience to catch on that Escape was actually shaping up to be one of the best live bands on the late-'70s club circuit -- and one of the best new wave bands full-stop. Firmly predicting all that Lene Lovich, Hazel O'Connor, and Toyah would be bringing to the Top 30 over the next couple of years, Escape's sound was firmly rooted in the present day, a succession of exhilarating, quirk-bedecked rockers that owed little more than their assurance to any past experience. When it came time to cut their debut album, however, Escape's name was barely visible on the sleeve. The marketing men knew Kristina was "the name"; now she was the artist as well. But it's still a full-on band effort, with the opening "Street Run," in particular, a sharp-edged rocker alive with both modern quirk and more classical undercurrents. The almost-world-music-flavored ...
