| | Punk-O-Rama 3 CD
Holy hardcore, Batman! This is the most comprehensive punk compilation you could ask for. Over the course of no less than twenty-five cuts (one of the advantages of writing short songs), the third volume of Epitaph's PUNK-O-RAMA series surveys the state of American punk circa 1998 with such an eagle eye you'll feel like you're right in the middle of the mosh pit. You get a good cross-section here, from old-timers like Agnostic Front, the Cramps (admittedly the least "punk" of the artists featured here) and Bad Religion as well as less known but equally important acts such as Pulley, Bouncing Souls and Union 13. Just make sure to play it loud.
Contains 25 tracks.

It would be inaccurate to say that Epitaph's Punk-O-Rama compilations cater to punk purists 100 percent of the time. Not everything on Punk-O-Rama, Vol. 4, which Epitaph assembled in 1999, is hardcore punk -- some of the material is simply alternative rock with a strong punk influence. But it is safe to say that Vol. 4 is punk-oriented, and it is also safe to say that the CD is, at five dollars, a bargain for North American consumers -- when Vol. 4 came out in 1999, five dollars was less than one would typically pay for a used CD. And even though not every tune on this disc is a five-star gem, most of the tracks are decent or competent; there are no outright duds. Fans of a hardcore punk sound -- as opposed to poppy emocore or punk-influenced alternative rock -- should have no problem getting into Agnostic Front's "It's My Life," the Dwarves' "I Will Deny," or Union 13's "A Life's Story." Meanwhile, the Voodoo Glow Skulls' "They Always Come Back" is an abrasive, forceful example ...

| | Marianne Faithfull Secret Life CD (1995)
Punk-O-Rama 3
$9.85 All music written by Angelo Badalamenti. All lyrics written or co-written by Marianne Faithfull except "Prologue" (Dante Alighieri), "Losing" (D. Forman/D. Levine), and "Epilogue" (William Shakespeare).
For her first studio album comprised of mostly original material in over a decade, Faithfull enlisted noted composer Angelo Badalamenti (who collaborated with David Lynch for the Twin Peaks TV soundtrack) to write music for her lyrics and produce. Faithfull is still in rippingly fine voice, and her words still penetrate. But while Badalamenti's densely orchestral arrangements can be effectively noirish, they can also create an inappropriately cold and detached ambience, despite standout tracks like "Flaming September" and "She." ~ Richie Unterberger
Mid-price Spectrum reissue of her 1995 album unavailable in the US.
Recorded at Excalibur Sound and National/Edison Recording Studio, New York.
Personnel: Marianne Faithfull (vocals); Vincent Bell (guitar, mandolin); Carmine d'Amico (guitar); Gene Orloff (violin); ...
