Band Geek Mafia finds Voodoo Glow Skulls somewhat coming into their own, developing a cross between ska and punk that isn't quite ska-punk but has many of its same attributes. It's energetic, punchy, and irreverent -- and all of these are both blessings and curses, depending on your point of view. If you don't have a silly sense of humor, the record could get on your nerves, which might mean that you won't notice the fact that Voodoo Glow Skulls are musically more astute than many of their peers. They have a pretty sharp sense of melody and can blend the horns with the punk guitars with more dexterity than most. They do have problems with writing a consistent batch of songs, but the high points are proof that the group is coming into its own. And it's nice to see that they have the good taste to cover "Stranded in the Jungle." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

There's a saying that there can never be too much of a good thing, and Rancid could've coined the phrase. Their irresistible old-school punk and their ska-in-the-garage guitar sound are sure to please anyone who thought the Clash were the best that '70s punk had to offer.

Released in both English and Spanish versions, Voodoo Glow Skulls' 1995 effort may have been one of the high points in popularity for the seven-member ska-punk outfit. Unlike some more laid-back performers in the genre, and coming from a time before the style was commercially successful, Voodoo Glow Skulls are a bit more heavy-handed on the punk part of the mix, resulting in consistently fast-paced and chugging song structures that occasionally erupt into triumphant horn breakdowns and chanted group vocals. The unfortunate aspect of this equation is that the band really isn't that great at punk rock, and the tracks tend to get muddled on a few occasions, though the group's ska stylings very nearly save the day a number of times. A cover of the traditional "Charlie Brown" and a few Spanish numbers come off pretty well, but at other points the band is just too juvenile to really make an impact. You have to respect a band for sticking with it. While the aggressive, energetic, sometimes sophomoric hybrid of skacore is limited by the very traits that make it great, Voodoo Glow Skulls continue to make strong albums. They might not innovate, but they always entertain. The longstanding Inland Empire combo returns to Victory Records for Adicción, Tradición, Revolución, their seventh album and latest blast of hardcore-derived chording smashing into punchy horn charts and the raucous, often bilingual vocal chants of Frank. Whereas 2002's Steady as She Goes suffered from weak production, VGS get it right with Adicción. The guitars are thick and gritty, the drum sound is way past live, and the horns tingle with treble. "We did not use protools or any other computer programs to record this album," the liners state, and the stance is another illustration of the band's proud, almost defiant aesthetic stance.
