The members of Pulley spent more time together in the studio crafting their third album than any of their previous records, and it shows -- Pulley is their tightest, hardest-hitting album yet. There is little of the jokey, throwaway humor that popped up on their debut; nearly all the lyrics deal with the sort of inward-looking angst that punk-influenced bands like Husker Du and Nirvana popularized. Even if there can be a certain sameness to some of the melodic progressions, Pulley overall is a workmanlike effort from seasoned veterans who have learned how to work together and have been making this sort of music for a long time. ~ Steve Huey

5 stars BEST PULLEY ALBUM YET!!!!!!
This album rocks real hard!!!!
They've basically progressed as a band and have produced a very impressive follow up to their previous outings which were a little weak. The songs have something to say and it's not just a case of balls out play as fast as you can all the songs are well structured and there are plenty of melodic hooks to sink your teeth in. This is the best punk album I've ever heard, BUY IT NOW

Screeching Weasel Television City Dream CD  (1998)

Pulley
CD $11.39  5 stars Audio Samples
All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. The second re-group of Screeching Weasel comes across more as a bunch of studio musicians wanting to make a buck rather than a bunch of kids getting together for the sheer enjoyment of writing and recording anthems for the angst filled generation. Not saying that Screeching Weasel are a bunch of has-beens, it's just that Ben Weasel and company give off that "screw the kids, where's our check" attitude. "Television City Dream" is definitely a lot better than their last album "Bark Like A Dog, " but that's really not saying all that much. The songs are a lot faster and to the point making it comparable to a more serious "Boggada Boggada Boggada, " and there's even a tribute to the Vindictives with their cover of "Pervert at Large." But aside from that, "Television City Dream" falls under the "heard one Screeching Weasel album, heard 'em all" category. ~ Mike DaRonco Personnel: Jimmy Spectacular (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Mass Giorgini. Recording information: Sonic Iguana (01/1998-02/1998); Uberstudio (01/1998-02/1998).

Lagwagon Let's Talk About Feelings CD  (1998)

Pulley
CD $6.65  4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. Lagwagon's caffeinated combination of adrenaline, melody, and humor owes a lot to NOFX and for that matter, Descendents. Although the band doesn't add any new dimensions to the So-Cal punk tradition, they hold it up admirably with tight playing and sometimes heartfelt lyrics. Let's Talk About Feelings won't be a revelation to fans of the pop punk genre, but it may provide an enjoyable, if not essential, addition to their collections. ~ Andy Hinds Audio Mixers: Stephen Egerton; Bill Stevenson. No Use For A Name More Betterness CD  (1999)

Pulley
CD $6.69  4.8 stars Audio Samples
All that needs to be heard is the first song on More Bitterness and that pretty much generalizes the entire album. Just straightforward mid-tempo, pop-punk, multi-layered vocals, and the occasional sample that'll inform the listener when another song is starting. What else could be said for a band that's practically put out the same album for the last several years? At least they do an abrasive versions of the Pouges' "Fairytale of New York" -- thanks to a little help from Tilt's Cinder Block -- which alone deserves a star. ~ Mike DaRonco Recorded in June 1999. Personnel: Cindy Black (vocals); Todd Denman (whistling, tin whistle). Audio Mixer: Ed Stasium. Recording information: Motor Studios (06/1999). Arranger: No Use for a Name. No Use For A Name: Tony Sly (vocals); Jackson (guitar); Matt (bass, background vocals); Rory (drums). Pulley Esteem Driven Engine CD  (1996)

Pulley
CD $9.95  5 stars Audio Samples
All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. Like any supergroup project, Pulley's Esteem Driven Engine has its moments of excitement, particularly when the band locks together and delivers a surging post-hardcore punk rush. However, there are large stretches of Esteem Driven Engine where Pulley simply flail away, wallowing in the jokey adolescent humor of "Barf" and "Wok Inn" or make noise just for the sake of it. Unfortunately, the band's noise is neither cathartic or invigorating -- it's simply there, occasionally pulling you in with the accidental catchy hook. In other words, even sixth-generation punk rockers aren't immune from the perils of a supergroup. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Personnel: Scott Miller (vocals, background vocals); Mike Palm (guitar, background vocals); Trey Clinesmith (guitar); Jordan Burns (drums); Bryan Radinsky (background vocals). Pulley's second album, 60 Cycle Hum, continues in much the same vein as its predecessor, albeit with a bit more focus and consistency. Not every song hits the mark, but running through 14 in 28 minutes guarantees that any missteps are strictly short-duration. ~ Steve Huey Photographer: Jesse Fischer . Ataris Blue Skies, Broken Hearts...Next 12 Exits CD  (1999)

Pulley
CD $11.29  4.8 stars Audio Samples Definitive Album
Santa Barbara's Ataris were among the legions of pop-punk bands to emerge in the late 1990s. Like many of their contemporaries, the Ataris owe something of a debt to the Descendents and the Buzzcocks, but a large part of their sound comes out of the alternative rock of the '90s. BLUE SKIES, BROKEN HEARTS...NEXT 12 EXITS is the Ataris sophomore effort, and the band avoids the notorious second-album slump by cranking out 14 high-energy, concise tunes rife with hooks, power chords, and hopped-up rhythms. While the Ataris know how to rock (only the acoustic guitar and cello duet of "My Hotel Year" deviates from the slashing electric guitars and pummeling bass and drums on this set), they also demonstrate an emo-influenced sensitive-guy side. "1.15.96" chronicles the story of a relationship, and "Your Boyfriend Sucks" is--despite its comic title--an anguished confession of unrequited love. The Ataris back their tales of romance with plenty of muscle (note the triple-time assault of "Broken Promise Ring)" and occasionally shift their focus to questions of personal direction, as on the anthemic "Better Way." Full of boisterous, youthful energy, the Ataris' second record is a strong dose of emo-tinged pop-punk. The story of the Ataris reads like a Hollywood script, with vocalist/guitarist Kris Roe giving the Vandals his demo tape at a show in his backwater Indiana town, only to receive a call out to California by Vandals bassist and Kung Fu Records head-honcho Joe Escalante to put together the Ataris. A 1998 EP (Look Forward to Failure) on Fat Wreck Chords got them attention, and now this full-length on Kung Fu shows what all the fuss is about. The Ataris play pop-punk of the NoFX school, with emo lyrics that are occasionally cringe-inducing but always charming in their heart-on-sleeve frankness. They toured here recently supporting MxPx, which is a good indication as to their genre. The sound is pretty straight ahead, but the quality is uniformally high. This is a band b

On their 2005 EP, the Skygreen Leopards continue to create their own mythological musical realm, one filled with animals, thieves, and an abundance of pastoral settings. The California duo (Glenn Douglas and Donovan Quinn) offers up six songs of dreamy, lo-fi folk-rock, including the fractured, psychedelic "Jehovah I Surrender" and the sun-drenched "Play for the Spring."
